The reason those eating plant-based diets have less fat buildup in their muscle cells and less insulin resistance may be because saturated fats appear to impair blood sugar control the most.

Even if saturated fat wasn’t associated with heart disease, the effects on pancreatic function and insulin resistance in the muscles would be enough to avoid it. Despite popular press accounts, saturated fat intake remains the primary modifiable determinant of LDL cholesterol, the #1 risk factor for our #1 killer heart disease. A few years ago, I was low carb, mostly primal. My blood sugar wouldn't get below the 140's without a lot of extra insulin. Even when my carbs were under 50 a day. Now, I'm vegan and my carbs have increased to 3-400, daily and my insulin needs have been cut in half. It's great to have the science behind WHY. Thank you!

That's what McGregor has done here, I don't see him belittling others and providing anecdotes. This is how we learn collectively, by stating research and being open to alternative viewpoints. There is NOTHING wrong with viewing differently from him, but people will take you seriously if you bring forward a strong argument.

Krishyy Fan read the research, the reason sugars go sky high is because of insulin resistance and that is caused by FAT in the muscles. Sugar is not the cause of diabetes, nothing wrong with fruits and complex carbs, however if you are talking about refined sugars then I agree with you.
@krishyyfan5153

the fat from the muscle comes from refined sugar consumption... insulin is responsible in converting glucose to Fat... as you eat refined sugar, insulin rise up to control the glucose and convert it to Fat... This also contributes to Insulin resistance because your Insulin in your blood is elevated... If you eat Animal Fat, nothing will happen... your insulin will not rise up because Fat is not sugar...

Good for you. However, I lowered my carbs to under 20g net carbs and kept eating meat and I dropped 55lbs in 6 months. Meat is not the enemy. Processed and high glycemic carbs are. I have rarely seen any ketogenic adherent demonizing the vegan diet in and of itself. For some reason, the vegans refuse to give diets like the ketogenic diet that same courtesy. That is because any sort of animal product or saturated fat MUST be bad, therefore the diet is bad. Veganism is like a cult. Nothing wrong with the diet. Its adherents, however, are another story.

@epickiller30
@epickiller30 Жыл бұрын
@@danielhoward4566 that's just one example which is through the so called activation of the TLR4 receptor. If you read more recent papers you'll find that it's incorrect and studies that find that saturated fats agonize the TLR4 receptor is due to contamination of LPS. This should be quite obvious because TLR4 is often dubbed the endotoxin (LPS) receptor. Here's a study quote from a study: "LPS and lipopeptide contamination of the widely used reagent fatty-acid-free BSA explains the previously reported stimulation of TLR2 and TLR4 by SFAs." -Saturated Fatty Acids Do Not Directly Stimulate Toll-Like Receptor Signaling Now if you want to make a case that saturated fat can increase the absorption of LPS then that's a different discussion, but it's very clear that there's no clear inflammatory pathway for saturated fat even with all the demonization it gets in the main stream. Now PUFAs, those have a clear inflammatory pathway through ecosinods.

@@Qwerty_789 Wrong. Saturated fat does not cause diabetes. Charlatan Gregor is illiterate on the mechanisms of Diabetes, let alone has no specialization of the field and it painfully shows. Type I is an issue of inflammation and auto-immunity that damages beta cell production of insulin, Type II is an issue of capacitance, there being the adipose tissues are maxed out and the body saturates blood with fatty acids. Many who're illiterate about basic human biology and liver metabolism would assume, fat in blood equals causation, wrong. Fat is there because its the energetic medium in the human body with a capacitance as much as there is adipose fat tissue. No such capacitance or system exists for carbohydrate metabolism because it would be energetically useless and expensive for the human body. In terms of energetic preference for fatty acids we know this is true because of the fatty acid cycles involving AcetylCoA for the production of glucose via gluconeogenesis to power cell mitochondria. Gregor himself on nutrition "facts" links a piece of literature to gastric bypass surgery as being the cure, where in that specific paper the author's say the benefit derived was not from the surgery but from energy restriction caused by the surgery, where people could not eat for a prolonged period thereafter. Painfully stated those who undergo gastric bypass cannot eat, and are therefore fasted, have a medically induced short-medium term fast from foods where (a) they loss body fat/weight and (b) have a long term resting blood sugar levels from not eating. The entire benefit of that surgery comes from the fact patients are fasted. Surgery is not even required to elicit this effect, but just regular plain old fashioned fasting. Gregor also mentions "fat burning", guess what carbs do to fat oxidization in the human body? They inhibit it because most plants sit squarely in the middle of the glycemic load index, where insulin release competes for and inhibits fatty acid oxidization. If you want to make a food obesigenic, add sugar or carbohydrate to it, and eat it it multiple times per day. This is also highlighted by a human physiological mechanisms known for decades now, called "The Randle Cycle", where any equivalence of fat and carbohydrate is the most insulinogenic, inflammatory resposne possible from human diet. Its why the "Standard American Diet" is flat out metabolic poison, and yes its the government recommended diet! Its why vegans net any benefits coming off the poisonous diet as a comparison. However plant based diets are still quite inflammatory yet, especially for those vegans trying to get in healthy fats.

I would love to see a study showing blood results of carnivores as comparison, to better isolate the impact of saturated fat. This video implicates the body's own adipose tissue as a contributor and we already know adipose tissue is inflammatory on it's own, but most carnivores report significant reductions in body fat, therefore inflammation should go down in those subjects. Quantity of fat consumed and adipose tissue on the body is a major consideration, and the video rightly references this as "accumulated saturated fat". One complaint: "animal fats" should not be equated with "saturated fats", for example, lard is more monounsaturated than saturated, and should have a net protective effect from lipotoxicity. However the KANWU study he references, the saturated diet vs. monounsaturated diet showed an insulin reduction from 7.15±4.19 to 6.03±3.69, not at all significant. Full disclosure, I am meat based keto and my blood glucose, fasting insulin, blood pressure, weight, triglycerides etc. are all normal.

What carnivores report is irrelevant because most people who do this are eating a standard American diet and were obese to begin with. And none of the people pushing these low carb diets will pay for a study because they have found a nice gap. Telling people it's healthier to give up the potatoes rather than the steak creates a nice space where people get to keep eating food they love and lose some weight because the worst foods are processed foods loaded with fat and refined carbs. Of course both of those things should be avoided on a healthy whole food place based diet. No one argues that fats like donuts, fries, cakes etc are healthy. These are the foods most low carb dieters are forced to give up when they go low carb or the newest iteration, carnivore.

Interesting video. I'm not diabetic but have a blood glucose meter just for experiemental purposes. I can eat god knows how much saturated fat and see no change in blood sugar - but when I eat a high carb meal I get a pretty good spike even if I've not had any saturated fat in the last few days. I twice performed a weight gain experiment, where I gained substantial weight (which should theoretically make me insulin resistant), once with carbs, and once with fat (I actually drank cream neat for 3 months - don't try this at home). On the carb weight gain diet my blood sugar rose high every evening and would barely come down for hours. I went from 155lbs weight to 180. On the next experiment, (after losing weight the first time) I started at 149lbs, and drank 1000 calories worth of cream every day for 3 months. I reached 180lbs. I then tested my blood sugar (10 times in the day). If was totally flat lined regardless of what I ate. Please Michael Greger explain how I could gain even more body fat on saturated fats than with carbs, in less time, and have NO increase in blood sugar, unlike when I gained on carbs? My experiment was quite extreme and I had to stop the second one (with cream) early because of severe headache issues that started, however.

Insulin Resistance+low Carbs=No diabetes. Insulin Sensitivity+More Carbs=No diabetes. Insulin Resistance+More Carbs=Diabetes. Insuline resistance is an adaptation to survive on areas where the food was scarce, and yes, fat makes you insulin resistance, but not diabetic, a diabetic person it´s made out of too much fat+to much carbs, that it´s a diabetic person. The polar bears survive thanks to insuline resistance, what a lot of humans did on the paleolithic. That´s why you should cycle keto-diet. Read Bill Wollcott´s book. and read the conclusion of this study. Sorry for my english, I´m learning. And I want someone that help me to find the effect of satured fats on the cells of the lions, tigers or bears, and I want to know if they are insuline sensivity, because I don´t believe that they can survive being insuline sensivity. The most scientists say that insuline resistance it´s a genetic defect, while those of this study says that it´s a genetic adaptation, not genetic defect, when you put some with insuline resistance that it is a genetic adaptation where carbs are too much, you get sick, and then you all say that it´s fault of insulin resistance, it is the combination, carbs aren´t bad, and fats aren´t bad, but too much carbs+too much fat it´s real bad, that "lipotoxicity" that Greger says, I don´t believe that deserves that name. www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/1875844

Both LCHF and HCLF had good results at improving lipid profiles and inflammation. What they have in common is that both resign from PUFAs seed oils. I would say fried PUFAs are worse than saturated fat.

Weird how so many people literally cure their insulin resistance and diabetes by eating more saturated fat. And how has insulin resistance increased so much globally as saturated fat consumption has decreased in favor of unsaturated and polyunsaturated fats?
@wilsont1010

Saturated fat is God sent, it has the widest range of huge therapeutic functions. The whole medical and food industries knew about this for many decades including most doctors but they remain as accomplices, and would never inform their patients.

This is not completely accurate. their studies are skewed towards a specific outcome. It is not easy to gain weight if you consume only fat and protein. Now if you add simple carbs to the mix you will inflate like a balloon. I have eaten mainly fat and protein for 6 months. I have lost weight and my blood sugar is normal... I was diagnosed with diabetes a year ago.

Blood sugar improvements does not mean increased carbohydrate tolerance. If you are not eating carbohydrate which converts into glucose then obviously blood glucose will go down. But decreasing blood glucose without improving insulin sensitivity has no value. Best method of assessing insulin sensitivity is glucose tolerance test in which blood glucose is measured after taking 75gm of glucose.
@gallectee6032

@@babbarsher413 Exactly. People think a low blood sugar is healthy, when they can't eat any carbohydrates or their blood sugar spikes up to 400 mg/dl. A healthy person can handle carbohydrates without any issues.

how it wouldn't affect? for example if I stop smoking for 2 months, the first cigarette after will be alot stronger, you could apply that logic to alcohol and to pretty much everything, to drugs to almost almost anything, are you absolutely sure that insulin sensitivity doesn't go up after say 10 years of no carbs? that goes against logic, also the glucose tolerance test is a test, doesn't solves the problem

sorry but the chemistry dictates that fat does not cause any inflammation. You can eat the burger but the sugar in the ketchup and the carbs in the bun are what cause the inflammatory response.

There's no such thing as a vegetable fat. Have you ever tried to squeeze a fat from a vegetable? You can rip oils from seeds in a factory but they have to be bleached and dyed and flavored. All oils and fats contain saturated fat, there isn't one that doesn't. Coconut oil contains 95% saturated fat. It's the best.

Yeah... how come eating saturared fat is getting me slimmer and my blood glucose level is better than ever? there's something with the science he's showing, it doesn't match with the reality my body, and lab tests are showing.

+toavm Because you are eating hypocalorically. Any diet deficient in calories has this affect. The problem is what happens when you stop losing weight. This is why we favour science over anecdote.
@toavm
@toavm 8 жыл бұрын
+trotskyite1 No, it's not that simple. Calorie restriction, may worsen your metabolism. Its a matter of knowing how your hormones work. Many people wont reach their weight loss goal if they suffer thyroid problems for example, or have sleeping problems or live under heavy stress, cortisol is always up. Solving these is the first step. Knowing how to manage your fat burning hormones is super important. Beign vegan or omnivore has nothing to do with weight loss. And yes, most vegans are slim, but they are, because of refined carbohydrate restriction.
