LIQUID CRYSTAL? Trying 4 Kinds of Color Changing Crafts

What is Liquid Crystal? I saw Simplynailogical turn nails into thermal experiments and was curious to see how they work with resin. Today we will test out 4 different color changing crafts from Solar Color Dust. These DIYs are made from UV resin and silicon molds. How do they work? Let's try them out!

OMG! I love those powders! I'm definitely putting them on my wish-list! A little tip for when you want to paint over resin: Sand it first (a rough grain gives the paint more grip) and of course a plastic primer afterwards. If the surface is still too slippery then a coat or three of liquitex matte medium should do the trick. (its like mr. super clear but not as toxic)

The liquid crystal was probably the coolest in terms of reaction, but probably the least in terms of being user friendly. I would totally use the thermal reactive for nearly anything that it would work on. UV reactive powders are cool too if you can get them to work, I've had nail polish that's UV reactive... of course some of my favorite nail polish is thermal reactive.

Before I started making polymer clay charms, I'd have expected them to be fairly cheaply priced (and there are definitely artists out there asking $2 or less). But now after trying it myself, I actually applaud when I see people listing their charms in the $10+ range because I know how much work, material, time, experience, etc goes into them and that person deserves to get that bread.

Hey Jackie, I had a question about resin: When you use those silicon cups to mix color in, how do you clean those to use again? I am a bit worried about flushing resin down the drain...

Please don't ever put ANY resin in the drain! It's harmful to the aquatic life. If you're using uv resin in them, harden it with the light and just peel it out. If you're using regualr a+b epoxy, either leave it to harden and then peel, or wipe out the residue with a paper towel and then a spray of 91% alcohol to get the rest.

Revvy with UV resin you just pop it on the window or UV light, let it harden and pop the hardened resin in the trash. Not sure about two part resin, but I would never flush it, it might harden and clog.

And please always wear gloves when working with resin. Two part resins are quite toxic in liquid form and all resins can cause contact exposure allergies.

Wait for it to cure and peel it out. If you don't wanna do that, wipe it out with a paper towel and use rubbing alcohol to remove the resin. I bought a box of alcohol wipes for souls or any that gets in my skin. Because it hurts. It heats as it cures. Wear gloves.

I'm in Canada too and have a weird time with UV resin. The first one I bought would only cure after literally DAYS in the sun. I bought another one from a different shop and it's been better, but still definitely takes longer than 2 mins with a 36 watt UV lamp. It's pretty humid where I live, so I blame Canadian weather 🤷‍♀️

Oooh this is so fun. I want a chess set made from colour shift resin. If there was a way to get a more even coat with that last one then I'd definitely go with that, if not then the heat activated change ones (the black to turquoise was very pretty).
