This is the only video commissioned by the legendary 99 Records in NYC. It was produced during 1982 by the Michael Sporn Animation Studios and then released in the Spring of 1983. Mike was my Brother-In-Law at the time. He'd never made a music video, so he jumped at the chance. We could only afford $500 but Micky didn't care. Everybody thought that it came out great!
Of course many listeners will immediately pick up on the bassist Richard McGuire's unmistakable baseline. Liquid Liquid were four white friends who were more a part of the No-Wave scene at the time. This track ’Cavern' and the rest of the EP's tracks were produced at the Radio City Recording Studios by their house engineer, Don Hunenberg and the labels owner, Ed Bahlman. Right after recording Ed hightailed it over to Manhattan's local cutting edge urban radio station, WBLS, and got it right into legendary DJ Franky Crocker's hands. He and their entire staff LOVED IT! For the next three months Liquid Liquid's “Cavern" went ballistic. Ed and I couldn't keep it in stock! Then one day I went to work, and no Liquid Liquid. **POOF**. Gone, baby gone.... About a week later, new artist “Grandmaster Flash" debuted a track called ‘White Lines". Thus began the world's first “Sampling Law" battle.
Long story even longer as per your requests:
NYC 1979
In one of the long vacant basement storefronts of the West Village, a British ex-pat had setup a small shop.
The shop was at 99 McDougal street. I lived just four blocks away at 313 Avenue of the Americas, right next door to the Waverly Theater. I was working at an enormous Legacy law firm as a file clerk. My friend Joe Miller told me that a new Punk store had opened over there. Joe ran the Jazz department at the Golden Disc record store around my corner on Bleeker Street. I recognized him from a Times Square record store called ‘Colony' that he used to work at and I used to hang out at.
Gina Franklyn is a designer. She was one of Londons original English Punks of 1976. She'd been there at it's exploding apex without even knowing that there had been a detonation. Like so many others, she'd been absorbed into Great Britain's massive post-WWII Socialists State. A nuclear reaction brought about by its Monarchy's inability to protect the population and it's own future from the inevitable collapse that coincides with the End of Empire. She was making her own clothes and selling the supplies one would need to decorate yourself for a personal revolution. I bought a bottle of Blue/Black hair dye and a few pins. Punk Flare. A month or two later I noticed that there were some imported 45rpm singles hanging in one of the two large plate glass windows. I scampered down the rabbit hole into a Brave New World.
A guy I'd noticed at local shows had setup a couple of turntables on a low counter he'd built on one side of Gina's shop. He only had a few records for sale but he had plenty more that he began to play for me. I wanted them all. I had been buying my music at Bleeker Bob's a few blocks away. That and Golden Disk around the corner on Bleecker Street were the only games in town to find anything that was imported or independently released. Those two other stores, well let's just say they had their own issues. I really didn't like spending my money there. The kinda places where you felt like you were impinging on the staff by asking questions.
Ed Bahlman became my Gatekeeper. Every Friday I'd cash my paycheck from my boring fukin job and dash over to 99 to spend most of it on whatever new records Ed had brought into their shop.
Every time before I'd leave I'd tell Ed that if he ever needed anybody that I'd love to work there. He started to believe me. The store was not a profit center. At all. He still worked his union job as a maintenance man at a building on the Upper East Side. He would finish up there and than run down to 99 in the afternoon.
Unbeknownst to all of us, 99 was becoming the off-center nucleus of a coalescing music scene. It was as surprising to Ed as it was to everybody else. By 1978-79 the NYC “punk" scene had been coopted by a few major labels. They in turn were fighting against the establishment press and radio to even recognize bands like Television and Talking Heads.
At 99, we were looking for something different than that.
Something like a phenomenon.
Sonic Youth, Bush Tetras, Glenn Branca, James Chance, Mars, Liquid Liquid, Misfits, Lydia Lunch and Lori Anderson weren't even bands yet but each of them and their members were regular customers. Tony Wilson, Vivien Goldman, Adrian Sherwood, Keith Levine and Martin Hanett made expeditions. Seminal club DJ Larry Lavant was a regular customer. So were all of the staff's of Danceteria, Hurrah! and the Mudd Club. Jack Rabid could smell the vinyl from his place. Trish and the girls from Manic Panic would buy records and steal/share ideas from Gina. Rick Rubin and Tim Sommer headed up the NYU delegation....tbc

Greetings,@@paulpullspunches! First off, please allow me to apologize for the delay in my responding to you but as I've had this video posted up here for well over a decade now, it's entirely possible that I don't stay on top of it's activity as intensely as I once had. In recalling the source of my knowledge of anything that took place in my Life over 40 years ago at this point, the comment left by your fellow responder, @RayVon, is indeed one of the reasons that I gained such intimate knowledge of the events in question here. It also took me quite a bit of concentrated reflecting time that also (but only just barely) contributed somewhat to the slowing down of the entire response process as well ;-). I also realized that much of the genuine responsibility that you, or possibly that of any reader, lies at my door in that I guess I could have been more expansive about how I came to acquire such an intricate knowledge of those events. Indeed I did include much of that in a first burst version of my commentary but when I read those parts all back to myself there just seemed to be no real need to puff up the personal stuff in order to float the vital history and the basic facts across. And plus also too it seemed too egomaniacal of me as well hahaha I started working as a clerk at the record store/label (99) in 1978, just before these events began to unfold. Additionally, I was the ONLY employe of theirs at the time so I was very upclose and personal to the situations at hand. The production of this video was done concurrently by my then Brother-In-Law, Michael Sporn, and the staff of his animation studio as I had "volunteered" them into creating it for next to nothing. The only other job that I'd held before this was as a Clerk Librarian and a Paralegal research assistant at one of the oldest (the 2nd oldest one actually) Law Firms in the United States. As such I did have a somewhat greater understanding of the functionality (or dysfunctionality) of the American legal system and when I found myself beyond my rudimentary knowledge I would simply foist my self on those legal eagles and beagles at my previous employer. Also, I was sleeping with a member of the band in question, Liquid Liquid. So and (finally) in conclusion, I do so solemnly swear that I hope this bit of additional background info goes someway towards filling in some answers for your valid query, @KoMan. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Terry_Tolkin en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/No.6_Records

Terry, I know I speak for many here when I say we're grateful for your being so forthcoming with the backstory behind this amazing track, and the tragedy that befell 99 as a result of its greatness. Like most young kids, I first heard White Lines and loved the song, mostly due to the rhythm section. It was a decade later, on a late-night airing of MTV's Liquid television that Sporn's video played, and I first heard Cavern, and understood who sampled whom. I've been having a blast ever since, collecting the vinyl pressings.

Anthony Barat, Sugarhill didn't just steal every important aspect of ‘Cavern' they bankrupted our little record label too fighting them in court. After a furious two year precedent setting legal war, we won a quarter of a million dollar judgement. Two weeks later Sugarhill Records declared bankruptcy and never paid 99 a single penny.

Wow...that's messed up. I've DJed a bunch of parties and played around with mashups and beat juggling to repeat a breakdown...doing on the spot remixing maybe vocals off a track onto another track's beat...never to make an album tho... and this...this is just a total ripoff. Top to bottom ripoff. And it was their biggest hit...everybody knows White Lines...they must have sold a ton of records...yet I'd never heard of this original. That's just wrong. And no royalties...so wrong... several years before the big Biz Markie case too, right? I'm sorry to hear that dude...smh
@TerryTolkinnnn
@TerryTolkinnnn 7 жыл бұрын
Anthony Barat , Yeah. This was THE legal case that coined the term “sampling". Even that word was a piece of very carefully crafted legalise. As you've already noticed they didn't “Sample" anything. They just fukin rapped over LL's studio click track! Effective sampling technology only existed in Ultra high-end recording studios at the time. We enjoyed unexpected acceptance from NYC's highly influential Urban radio station, WBLS. Frankie Crocker put “Cavern" on the map. They played it two to three times an hour for about 4 months. We could hardly keep up with production. Then one day I came in from my two days off. Ed Bahlman, 99's owner and the guy who produced “Cavern", was all kinda d weirded out and stressed. I asked what was up? “Man, Terry, BLS hasn't played “Cavern" once since Sunday. I called Frankie but he won't answer. I'm glad you're in. I'm going to go up to the station and see what's up" Well, Ed came back an hour or so later saying that they wouldn't let him upstairs, let alone seeing Frankie. This went on for the next few days. I'm not sure now exactly how many days but it was less than a week. We'd always kept the radio on. Suddenly, BOOM, there it was! “Cavern" was playing again! I knew Ed would be so relieved and happy so I called him at home right away. He tuned in while I was still on the fone. We both realized at exactly the same moment that this was NOT our record.
@anthonysbarat

Holy smokes...wow dude, that's almost unbelievable. Helluva way to hear what they did to your track, on the radio like that...I was only about 9 years old when the Liquid Liquid original was released so I can see why I didn't hear it back then...but I've gotta believe there was a conscious effort to keep it in the dark while this "big hit" took off...besides the added rapping, it's exactly the same track...even the "something like a phenomenom" calls....wow, tonight I've learned a dark tale of music business bullshit...wow. I remember the Biz Markie case involving samples and when Vanilla Ice ripped off the Bowie tune...neither of them were as blatant as this tho. The Beastie Boys had the one album Paul's Boutique when they went completely nuts with the sampling and had to pay out so much and involved such legal headaches that they started playing their instruments again...best move they could have made! That's a shame bro, I hope fate was kinder in later projects...

@goonerballs This was the original, from which Grandmaster Flash lifted the bassline and did a nice job with their version of it. Hot in NYC underground clubs summer '83, when NYC was the incubator for today's dance musics.

They've been sampling since samples could be sampled. That's culture for you folks

Theives? Culture is made to be interpreted, repeated, and remixed. That is how the knowledge gets passed on. We copy what we learn, music is the same way. Innovation, though, comes from seeing those past "mistakes" we build from and make anew. Don't forget where [you] come from!

f1guremeout As long as credit is duly given. Did G-Flash acknowledge publicly where they got their sample from?

I don't believe so, however in leaving the mystery for those searching for truth in the music and those who already knew can meet somewhere in the history and share the blessing good music offers. Consider it a conflict of interest, Madlib would encourage discovery of true listeners to find the source material and that way the music can never be lost. G-Flash sampled not a popular song, but an obscure one for a reason: to highlight the music itself and those who know it, would be the first to know. He, nor any other artist, creates in a vacuum.

Guys like Melle Mel rhymed over these records every night. When hip-hop transitioned into the studio, MCs still wanted the breaks they were familiar with. Some instances occurred where DJs cutting the breaks actually got pressed on wax, but in general that was not polished enough for mass consumption. Labels like Sugar Hill and Enjoy would employ house bands whose sole job was to recreate records MCs were used to rapping over. Probably half of those early records with house bands simply were recreations or interpolations of popular breaks that most hip-hop listeners, particularly in NYC, were well aware of. It's not so much that they were trying to steal or pass a record like this off on their own, it was more of an assumption that the target audience already knew it originated from somewhere else.

The video fits perfectly. It's well edited with a decent rhythm and pace. Also, the eeriness and hypnotic effect of the song come across in the animation. I'd be remiss if I didn't add that the song itself is incredibly powerful and hugely influential.

@SPAZZOID100 Another NYC gem. This was big on KISS & BLS FM NYC, on the boxes in the parks and in the streets, summer '83. NYC, the world's incubator for house, rap, hip hop, electro and to some extent, techno. Those who lived it know exactly what i'm talkin bout, ya'll.
