Hi Jan. it looks really nice out there, cold but some sun, right? It's been variably cold in Montreal. Looks like Friday is gonna be the break day. Temps drop down into single digits flirting above and below Zero, a few degrees in either direction. No snow on Halloween, which is a good sign, Winter is still a little farther off !!
@lakafant12 ай бұрын
is it common or not common to use silage bales in Canadian farming?
@snowwolf59632 ай бұрын
Great video. So does the cold affect the calves at all? Kinda scary to be exposed to the weather and possible predators outside at night for those youngsters.
@MellowYe77ow2 ай бұрын
The newborn calves are kept in a heated barn for the first several weeks of their lives. After they're weaned off of milk, the temperature is slowly lowered to acclimate them to the cold. Then they're moved into the group pen barn for another couple of months. Once they're moved out to the corrals, they're fed the same TMR diet that the active milk herd gets, to help keep their body temperature up.
@snowwolf59632 ай бұрын
@ yes thank you. What I meant was while they are adding to the new calf barn they are exposed to the weather or cold. Just wondering while the construction is going on how do they stay warm and worry about any predators walking through.

Hello! I wonder do you have your own well on the farm? Do you have any idea how many cubic meters of water are used in a day? it would be very expensive to have to buy water for all the animals. with kind regards Benny from Sweden 🇸🇪
@timothymbonham44532 ай бұрын
They have 2 or 3 wells on the farm. Use a lot of water, but they try to conserve it. Like the auto-flush upgrade Jn talked about. Also, the floor washing they do several times a day is done with used water. Plus, of course, a lot of their water is recycled. It ends up in the manure or the lagoon, is later spread on the fields, and eventually filters back into the aquifer. The big loss of water that leaves the farm is in the milk, which is 85-90% water.
