My first quilt, still a top, was one I made when I was pregnant with my daughter, over 40 years ago, anyway was a HST quilt. Made from clothing scraps and cardboard template. Since I was used to sewing clothes, it had 1/2 inch seams as an older aunt said that is what I should use. 🙂

This was the first block I learned how to do many years ago. I'm still learning things everyday with quilting. ❤ I'm still bad at it but I try that's all that counts. 😊I've learned alot from you. 🎉 and the many tips and tricks to quilting.

So proud of you April!! Pressing your fabric now. It took me a long time to figure out why my quilts were coming out WONKY!!!! My squares were in so many different sizes when I would press them after I sewed them, IMAGINE!!! Once I started pressing and using a little spray starch on my blocks and, MIRCLES UPON MIRCLES, my blocks needed little squaring up!!!

In the past, you had to trace the TRIANGLE template onto the back of the fabric and cut it out. You needed to cut 80 triangles. Then you needed to DRAW the 1/4" sewing line onto EACH TRIANGLE. Then pick 2 triangles and sew them on the line. Then you ironed them open and squared them up. This was from a book printed in the early 90s. You've come a long way baby.
@paulabecker7483Ай бұрын
I remember seeing this in a book. 😂
@connieking9873Ай бұрын
Oh you are so right. I remember a coworker cutting triangles out on her breaks ( we worked night shift). There wasn’t rotary cutters mats or anything fancy just her cardboard template. This was in the late 80’s early 90’s.

You may want to check out the book "Coat of Many Colors" (written by Dolly Parton and Illustrated by Brooke Boynton-Hughes). Like Dolly's song, the book teaches children not to bully other people over issues they have no control over. It's a story of a patchwork coat made long before patchwork coats and jackets become high fashion. You will love this beautifully illustrated book.

If we are using 9 HST and only get 8 HST from the 10 inch square--what dimensions do we cut of both fabrics to make the 9th HST? Great tutorial and love the manner in which you teach giving us unique skills. Happy Fall This would be a unique quilt of valor. I’m in the process of making several now. When using your ruler just draw a line on both sides. Sew on the lines then cut in between no need to draw the middle line
@liselang26767 күн бұрын
How big are the blocks? When you make your four blocks do you just add at the top bottom side in order to make a bigger star ? I'm asking because I want to make a quilt that is bigger than 4 blocks.
@kittyscottpdxАй бұрын
I’ve got some layer cake squares that I’ve been wanting to use for a while unfortunately there’s not a lot of variance meaning there’s like eight of each print. Is the goal to use mostly two colors? I was hoping when I used these to put a little pop color here and there with them because they are pretty much black-and-white.
@carolynforehand3490Ай бұрын
How did you end up with different blacks in that block?
@rhondawaldronАй бұрын
What a challenge you made EIGHT HSTs and magically made a block with NINE! After showing the original block pattern we were making it with SIXTEEN HSTs???
@christinahall3318Ай бұрын
I had that question. Are you making two 16 patch blocks?
@lindaholt1952Ай бұрын
That is probably why there are two different black fabrics. She had to make some more squares.
@chriswilford3576Ай бұрын
Remember she cut out two times ten inch blocks. Obviously she didn’t show the sewing of the second block into eight HST’s. This means she has 16 HST’s, hope this helps clear it up for you.😊 The second set used all 16 HST’s 😊😊 Also since she forgot to trim the edge when cutting the ten inch squares, so she’s probably cut another set, hence the two different black fabrics. 😂😂😍😍
@christinahall3318Ай бұрын
@@chriswilford3576 so are we making two 16 HST’s blocks?
@rhondawaldronАй бұрын
@@chriswilford3576 No she definitely showed TWO Nine HST blocks at the end No 16 HST block at all. 2x9 is EIGHTEEN so that wasn't it.
@wildyard46Ай бұрын
You made 8 blocks but used 9 in your block. Where did you get the 9th block? I mean, are all the blocks going to be 9P, so we need to make extras for all of them?
@carol-anncox759Ай бұрын
I thought the picture of the block showed 16 HSTs ( 4 rows by 4 columns). Just checking. 😅
@szelopАй бұрын
How do you like your Rebel?
@christinahall3318Ай бұрын
So the pattern is a 16 patch and you made two (2) 9 patch blocks. Are we making one 16 patch or (2) nine patch blocks or (2) 16 patch? I’m a bit confused - sorry.
@rhondawaldronАй бұрын

@dianecarlson2918Ай бұрын
are you not squring up your hsts?

I'm new at quilting, but isn't that what she did when she used the 4 1/2 square to cut off the dog ears? Still trying to learn it all :)
@dorothytackett9943Ай бұрын
That's called the easy eight method.
@rhondawaldronАй бұрын
That's why I thought she cut out 4 ten inch blocks 2 white 2 black so she would get a total of 16 like the pattern she showed. But she ended with 2 9 blocks????
@judypurcell954Ай бұрын
Faster if you cut your fabrics right sides together!
@deemoody1954Ай бұрын
Doesn’t this 8 at a time HST method put all the edges of the HSTs on the bias? I would rather do the 2 at a time HST. Yes it takes longer, but all the outside edges are on the straight of grain and stable.
@today1more2Ай бұрын
Breaking thread? Cutting thread sounds much better.
@janetdinatale9861Ай бұрын
So everyone finally figured out what the pattern was at 30:00 minutes into the video when you held up two 9-patch hst blocks. Hope no one went by the picture you put up earlier (2:20 minutes into the video) which was a 16-patch hst block. Other than not knowing what we were making in the end, good video.
@barbaraherron-mangel1116Ай бұрын
You changed material on the 2nd and 3rd rows. What happened to the original ones??? I see that you made 2 blocks not 1 sorry.
@aprilscraftroomАй бұрын
I did mixing and matching and yes I made 2 blocks. The first fat quarter didn’t make enough blocks for the second design so I added more.
