My daughter is a Senior Conductor on the LIRR. I remember the anguish she went through the first year with the studying and exams she went through. I remember the day she was presented with her LIRR conductors hat and name badge and how proud she was. Now she has seniority and usually a good choice of assignments and makes a very good wage and benefits. It wasn’t until I saw this video that I could appreciate what she has for from the beginning. I enjoyed your video. Thanks.

What's mind boggling is the sheer logistics that go into keeping the MTA running on a daily basis. Remarkable.

The video is very good. In my city São Paulo Brazil, the suburban train system is cleared, the rush hour is practically impossible to see empty trains ..
@lousherwood82276 жыл бұрын
Spent part of the afternoon here couple of days ago, and even right before the rush, the traffic levels are quite impressive, at around 1530, the deadhead runs into PS start up, and it gets really interesting.,.. do note the Pennsy-style stub signals, and the MN M2 , that hasn't been stripped of all its blue striping yet!

Great video! I'm from DC. What are those yellow elevated platform pieces for (the one he was standing on at 6:00)?
@FanRailer8 жыл бұрын
Those are bridge plates. They are for when the track closest to the platform is closed. They allow trains to access the station from the express tracks.

Why is it that the LIRR uses its horns so much less that Metro North, NJT, and Amtrak?
@FanRailer8 жыл бұрын
This is Woodside; there may be different regulations governing horn usage within the city terminal zone, but once you get out onto Long Island, the horns are used regularly.
@sonicboy6788 жыл бұрын
To add to this, there are almost no grade crossings within NYC, and likely fewer grade crossings in general. It also helps that there is little traffic from other railroads.

Why are trains running on diesel when there's a 3rd rail available? I understand there are outer stations not powered, but once they have power available, why not use it?
@SSantana823 ай бұрын
Because further east from Manhattan, past Huntington or Hicksville the diesels will run on their tracks with no third rails there, and they will either terminate to Penn Station or Jamaica. The 3rd rails only there in the video because of the M7s, M3s or M9s.

@SSantana823 ай бұрын
Not really, most go to either Mineola, New Hyde Park (Before the Third Track Project), Bethpage, Jamaica, Hunterspoint Ave if you want Amtrak or NJT, or Penn Station
@TheTransitNetwork8 жыл бұрын
Just a question before I try to railfan the LIRR on my main channel, To just go to the station do you need to buy a ticket? Or do you only need to buy a ticket to ride the train? I think you only need to buy the ticket if you ride, but I just want to make sure :O
@FanRailer8 жыл бұрын
You don't need a ticket per se to be on the platform, but it's always better to be a "passenger" when you get hassled for filming. At least then you have an excuse to be there besides filming.

lol go look up the port jefferson branch schedule and find the direct trains. 10:30 is WAY past the rush hour so you've missed the last inbound train by an hour and a half already.

@FanRailer3 жыл бұрын
through here? All tracks 60 mph in the station. There's a 45 mph curve directly west of the station though, so most trains are either accelerating out of it, or braking for it depending on direction of travel.
