This is actually implied a few times. He mentions knowing Alex and Joel and that he couldn't "save either of them". Also in the good ending Spamton speaks to Joel in what is implied ot be literal Heaven, so we know Joel is dead here.

OK yeah I see the issue. The slicing move is supposed to be able to miss which it isn’t. We must have made it certain but by mistake or forgotten to nerf it’s accuracy. Sorry about that we’ll patch. Could also be we forgot to make it a physical attack rather than magical so it would be effected by blind. My B. Thanks for making the vid btw
