I can't dispute that assertion. It's a failed martial artist and his wannabe-cowboy friend engaged in a desperate struggle for survival with a gang of deranged marauders who are surrounded by the mulched corpses of their previous victims. One guy is whipping around a piece of wood with a rusty nail stuck through it, another guy awakens latent psychic powers in his brain by hurting himself, and their leader is a grinning, filth-soaked maniac who keeps smearing viscera on himself and his comrades. It's extra fucked up because all those corpses and meat are implied to be the remains of the Mack family members who wouldn't put on the jerseys (IE, the siblings alluded to by the kid in the basement). It's a morbid and unsettling scene. I appreciate the fact that enemies leave corpses, it makes all the violence feel so much more real and immediate.

My reference points are the Cronenberg movie "Scanners" (where psychic powers are presented as a believable medical condition that affects the brain) and the Stephen King book "The Dead Zone" (wherein the protagonist gains clairvoyance after a traumatic head injury alters his brain chemistry). My assumption is that the fat dude's powers are activated by the flow of blood in his brain rapidly changing from self-harm ( _à_ _la_ Bart Huges, a Dutch guy who trepanned himself in the hope that it'd increase his mental acuity). Ed wanted it to be deliberately vague as to why characters in this game are able to do seemingly magical things like that, but the sense I get is that *pain is power.* I love how distinct and mysterious all the enemies in this game are. Even though the fat dude isn't even the main enemy in this fight, he's still quite memorable.
