Hi Lisa, I can not find my R&H sticks, but found my Sennelier oil pastels. I was wondering if I could use these instead? Looking for my Sticks I found my embossed paper, yea, now I can use it. Thank you for sharing this lovely painting and learning so much from you.
@LisaBBoardwine5 жыл бұрын
Gail, thank you very much for watching my channel! So glad you are learning some new things from them! The Sennelier oil pastels are beautiful- but they do not react like the R&F oil sticks. I use the oil pastels for mark making, usually towards the end of a painting, but I use the R&F's all through the painting process. The R&F's are very creamy and can be used for mark making, covering, blending etc....Hope this helps!!
@gailclaypool83915 жыл бұрын
Thank you Lisa, I figured they were not creamy enough. I ordered a set of R&H from Amazon and they just arrived. I will be busy tonight experimenting.

@LisaBBoardwine5 жыл бұрын
Jimmer E, thanks so much for subscribing! I use the blue, low adhesive tape or the white artist tape- just to protect the border while I paint. I always suggest to my students, if the blue tape bothers you visually, use the white. The blue is usually less expensive however!

@LisaBBoardwine4 жыл бұрын
Carol, thanks for watching!! I buy paper from scrapbooking shops, through amazon and anywhere I can find interesting papers! The search is part of the fun!
@LisaBBoardwine4 жыл бұрын
Carol, drying time depends on several factors. Temperature and humidity can play a part in drying time, as well as how thickly or thinly your layers are. But usually they are dry within 3 weeks or so.

How long does it take these paints to dry on canvas over acrylic? i used them as marks and accent lines and now have no idea when they will be "cured".
@LisaBBoardwine5 жыл бұрын
Marilyn, The R&F oil pigment sticks are made with natural wax (beeswax & plant wax), linseed oil, and pigment.Therefore they will take longer to dry than the oil paint mixed with cold wax on our palettes. But depending on the humidity, temperature, airflow etc. they should be dry or at least setting up within a week or so. Also it depends on how thickly or thinly you apply them.
@delhyde23 жыл бұрын
Oil paints are tactile dry in a few days-week, that is dry enough to apply another layer of paint over top but it's not cured. Curing takes much longer. Oil paintings can take up to a year or more to dry fully. Oil paint can even still continue to 'move' after a year, it is just the nature of the paint. Please do not varnish anything before about a year has passed as the oil paint will continue to dry underneath and your varnish will crack and dull your painting. If you work in layers there are some lovely tricks like polishing a tactile dry layer of paint with an oil medium applied to the whole painting with a soft rag, oiling out. This is to bring out the vibrancy of the oil paint's colour and even out the shine of the paints between layers that way you don't neccessarily need to rush to varnishing to enjoy those deep rich colours. There are also drying mediums like Liquin to speed the drying time. Worth looking into different ways oil paint is applied to understand the impact on drying time like; fat over lean (starting with thinned layers of painted followed by thicker and thicker layers), impasto (applying thick layers of paint) and alla prima (doing the whole painting in 1 to 2 layers only) etc.

Hello Lisa, am a big fan of your art and technique. In one of your video you said we can use oil paint over acrylic paint but not the opposite. We still cannot use acrylic over oil paint even if the oil paint is dry? Thank you for clarifying the matter.
@LisaBBoardwine4 жыл бұрын
abd, Thank you so much for watching!! And you are right! You can Never use acrylic over oil!! You can do a complete under painting in acrylic -then paint on top with oils or oil/CWM. Hope this helps!
@abdelfettas60894 жыл бұрын
Lisa B. Boardwine thanks for your reply Lisa, what i meant is can we paint with acrylic over a very dry oil painting, like for example a small cat in acrylic over a dry wax oil painting. Thank you.
@LisaBBoardwine4 жыл бұрын
abd elfettas abd, I don’t recommend ever adding acrylic paint on top of oils!!
@delhyde23 жыл бұрын
@@abdelfettas6089 Usually you don't paint acrylic over oil because acrylic is a water based paint and the presence of oil paint underneath might prevent the acrylic paint from adhering to the surface. It can impact the archival longevity of the work, but if you want to experiment go for it. I have painted acrylic over oil and it's still holding up after 11 years. I wouldn't go overboard and there are a few things you could try to help it stick. If you know exactly where on the painting you'll be applying the acrylic you could experiment with lightly sanding the exact area. Make sure the oil painting is dry so give it a year to dry completely. Still not something I would do for a commissioned work, more a personal project.

Can you combine wax on top of wet oil, or will that was just end up coming off, falling off. Somwhere along the lines of: oil/ acrylics or acrylics/oil?? Oil/wax??
@LisaBBoardwine4 жыл бұрын
Caroline cold wax can be mixed with oil paint to give it more body, make it dry faster and give it a matte finish. It also extends the paint and gives emphasis to texture. You can use clear cold wax as a final varnish also, let completely dry then lightly buff with a soft cloth for a sheen.
@delhyde23 жыл бұрын
Generally you don't mix mediums like cold wax into oil paints directly on the painting because due to the nature of the ingredients of oil paint you have to really work it in to get it to combine. That might prove a bit too rough for what you have painted underneath. In this way it isn't as forgiving as acrylic paint which you can blend things together on the canvas.

which colors were cold wax? do you color your wax with oil paint? love this I needed something new since I have been blocked lately
@LisaBBoardwine4 жыл бұрын
Thank you for watching Mollie! I used oil paint- mixed with cold wax medium- in a 50:50 ratio. The R&F oil pigment sticks have a certain amount of wax in them as well, so you can use these at any time during your painting. Using oil paint mixed with the cold wax --helps speed up the drying time of the oil paint too!
