Resonance of Words: An Exploration of Self and Consciousness
I'm listening to you saying these words. The emptiness of who you are as I look outside my window, seeing white leaves passing by-the same leaves I filled this morning because they were making pirouettes around each other.
I'm crying, not sure if it's your words or the sound of your words or the joy of hearing your voice. It seems the sound is so intimate; there's no headiness in your voice, no knowing. I can hear the invitation of the heart, innocent, and I cry. Maybe because it seems to be asking to drop this layer of protection.
Could you call the sense of self a way of weapon, like a guard with no clue what it's guarding? Pam pam pam pam pam-the sound of footsteps in front of a mysterious great gate. Is self a sort of guard, a guard you gently undress from its costume and weapons?
What a beautiful expression, and I know that this is your second language. So, what do you write like in your first language? Beautiful.
Yeah, the identity in itself isn't a guard. The identity is something that just arises. I know traditionally in nonduality it would be said it arises so it can recognize itself again, which is beautiful and poetic in itself to say. So it arises; you are separated so there can be a recognition of oneness again, which is a beautiful idea. In the end, I don't believe it because I don't believe any ideas, but it's a beautiful idea to express, to get the flavor of. Because there is a flavor of it that's true-by arising the identity, then when it collapses, the human has a different experience from all animals. It knows the difference between not being itself and being itself, whereas animals only are itself.
But because the human leaves home, it then has a knowing of going back home. So this is such a beautiful teaching. But in the end, I don't believe anything. I'm absolutely wide open to everything. But I can see the beauty in those words, like dismantling ideas, ideas, ideas, and then opening up to that infinite possibility and wonder of what we are.
So I wouldn't say that the mind or the identity is exactly a guard. It's an arising that happens in humanity, and ultimately it is unknown why life decides to create that. It arises from words. It arose when we began to speak "I" and "you," and then at some point, words became more hypnotic than who you are as beingless. So there was sort of this hypnosis into stories, and then this sort of built over generations and generations, and the caliber of it gained momentum. And now, thousands of years on, humans are at this place where their thinking is very rapid. They have technology which is also promoting rapid thinking, a society which promotes thinking as the highest in the hierarchy.
So in capitalist society, training as something which is mind-orientated is valued. So by doing that, you get paid more money than somebody who does, say, gardening or sweeping the roads. Our society is based on the intellect being king. And so I would say it’s also about survival. By creating this intense focus on the mind, we got very good at surviving. There are now currently 8 billion of us, growing rapidly.
And the aspect of this mind is actually trying to be helpful, is actually trying to get you to happiness. It's just doing it in the wrong way. And it is trying to protect itself in a way. It is trying to maintain an identity because it believes that is happiness, but it's not actually a thing that's doing that.

It's just doing it in the wrong way. And it is trying to protect itself in a way. It is trying to maintain an identity because it believes that is happiness, but it's not actually a thing that's doing that. Yeah, most beautiful. You're crying because it's a resonance, and it's not really a resonance with me even though we speak like that. So, you know, I say I'm speaking from this truth, calling to freedom. That's what I do-it's like a meditation. I'm calling you and others to what you are. It's actually you revealing yourself to you again as consciousness, so it's not actually me even though we speak like that, like I'm seemingly the precipice for that. That’s not true because consciousness is everywhere, in all places, in all things. It just seems that way in the illusion. So imagine in a dream at night-we're both characters in your dream at night. This is just such a good way to say it. If you're dreaming at night and we're both characters in your dream, and I'm talking to you and saying to you as your character in your dream, you aren't actually the character-you are the dreamer of the dream. And then at some point, you wake up as the dreamer of the dream and you know that you are the person dreaming the dream. And you're appearing as a character in the dream, but that's not actually who you are. Who is it that woke you up in the dream? Is it the dreamer of the dream, or is it the Lisa character speaking to you about freedom? This is a koan, a perfect koan for you to meditate on. Perfect koan-something that doesn't have an answer. So it's like a koan: what's the sound of one hand clapping? Or, if a tree falls in the forest and there's no one there to hear it, does it make a sound? So it's something that... Unanswerable.
