Lisbon Metro (2024) - Portugal

The Lisbon Metropolitan, better known as Lisbon Metro, is the underground railway transport system that serves the city of Lisbon, in Portugal. It opened on December 29, 1959, with the first line connecting Sete Rios (currently Jardim Zoológico) to Entre Campos. Since then, the metro has undergone several expansions and improvements to better meet the growing demand of the population and tourists.
Currently, the Lisbon Metro has four main lines, each identified by a different color. The Blue Line, also known as the Gaivota Line, connects Reboleira to Santa Apolónia. The Yellow Line, or Girassol Line, connects Odivelas to Rato. The Green Line, called the Caravela Line, runs from Telheiras to Cais do Sodré. Finally, the Linha Vermelha, or Linha do Oriente, extends from the Airport to São Sebastião.
The Lisbon metro system has more than 50 stations distributed throughout the city and its surroundings, totaling approximately 45 km of tracks. During peak hours, trains run at a frequency of 2 to 3 minutes, providing a quick and efficient means of transport for passengers.
In recent years, the Lisbon Metro has expanded to better meet users' needs. An example of this is the extension of the Red Line to include Humberto Delgado Airport, facilitating travelers' access to public transport immediately upon arrival in Lisbon. Additionally, there are plans to expand existing lines and create new lines to improve network coverage and reduce travel times.
The Lisbon Metro offers several benefits to its users. It is a quick and reliable alternative for getting around the city, helping to avoid heavy street traffic. Furthermore, it is an ecological option, contributing to reducing pollution by reducing the number of vehicles on the roads. Many stations are designed to be accessible to people with reduced mobility, with elevators and escalators.
