This is completely normal/common demeanor for calls like this(or any call really) … Highlighting this almost takes away from the rest of the Dispatchers that do this all the time, just as calm and collected. Literally what they’re trained to do. Potential employees undergo quite a few stress tests, if they cannot handle/deal with a call, the way this women does, they simply don’t get the job. 😉

@@MartinAston00 .. I disagree that highlighting this example takes away from the other despatcher s who handle stressful/traumatic situations. I believe that by highlighting this case, we, the generally uninformed public, are expressing our appreciation to all despatchers. Speaking for myself, I thought I knew what the despatchers were dealing with, but after listening to this audio I now know that I had NO IDEA how many elements they have to deal with all at the same time. Respect to all despatchers, and in this particular instance, big respect to despatcher Keith.

I just want to remind you, if the officer wasn't out there victimizing people for victimless traffic violations, he'd still be alive. At the end of the day this cop earned his living by taking money out of people's pockets. I also want to remind you that just because the government will pay these people to steal from the rest of society to generate money for the City/State does not make it morally right. At the end of the day if this cop choose to do a job that contributed to society, he'd still be alive. No sympathy from me, what goes around comes around as they say.

“Officer down” are some of the most heartbreaking words in the English language. The dispatch did a fantastic job with such a difficult call. Im thinking of the officer who didn’t make it home and the officer who is fighting for his life still and both of their families today. Thank you officers for putting yourselves in danger to help others.

@@PerspectiveEngineer .. you’re a right twat to turn this tragic event into a racist rant. I hope that one day you (or one of your beloved) need a cop to save you from the thugs. For your information, the FBI stats show - 1) More “white” people than “black” people are killed during commission of a crime. 2) More cops are killed by civilians than civilians are killed by cops. 3) The murder of cops by civilians has more than doubled since Jan 2021.

Keith Thornton did a job far beyond his pay grade. Calm, crisp and professional. Assumed a solid leadership role in the midst of panic, tragedy and chaos. Ensured that the two officers (one of whom was ultimately killed in the line of duty) and triaged appropriately. Despite the gravity of the situation- he insisted they both be taken to a Level 1 trauma center as opposed to closest hospital. Simultaneously, setting up perimeters to keep shooters from escaping, calling for air support, clearing route to hospital, instructing to initiate CPR and alerting trauma center prior to arrival of both officers. The City of Chicago, in particular, their police department and first responders, should be so thankful they have such an outstanding individual working with them. One could argue that his in-depth knowledge of the city and its health care systems certainly contributed to the survival of the second officer shot. I hope that he is precept ing new dispatchers as they come on board. Exceptional guy!

I have been an advanced nurse practitioner in an enormous metropolitan trauma 1 ER for 20 years. This is by far the best dispatching job I have ever heard. Of the millions of trauma and gun shot wound calls i have taken this communication was spot on. I run life flight and trauma 1 so we get these all day, and we are the hospital for the police department. Sadly I have taken these calls when they are en route. Our trauma unit runs like a well oiled machine at all times. This dispatcher needs some kind of recognition because it’s not every day a dispatcher is so knowledge of the city, speaks so clearly and cares so much. BRAVO my guy!! Well done!!
