Keith Thornton did a job far beyond his pay grade. Calm, crisp and professional. Assumed a solid leadership role in the midst of panic, tragedy and chaos. Ensured that the two officers (one of whom was ultimately killed in the line of duty) and triaged appropriately. Despite the gravity of the situation- he insisted they both be taken to a Level 1 trauma center as opposed to closest hospital. Simultaneously, setting up perimeters to keep shooters from escaping, calling for air support, clearing route to hospital, instructing to initiate CPR and alerting trauma center prior to arrival of both officers. The City of Chicago, in particular, their police department and first responders, should be so thankful they have such an outstanding individual working with them. One could argue that his in-depth knowledge of the city and its health care systems certainly contributed to the survival of the second officer shot. I hope that he is precept ing new dispatchers as they come on board. Exceptional guy!

I love the way this guy kept it very concise & level headed. I worked as a dispatcher in a small town and this guy is truly amazing!! He was handling getting a perimeter set up to ensure the suspects were caught, reassured the officers calling in that help was on the way, attempted to get ambulances & medical care to the scene, diverted the officers to a trauma center... This guy is a HERO!! People don't realize how instrumental 911 dispatchers are to ensuring the safety of the community.

I have been an advanced nurse practitioner in an enormous metropolitan trauma 1 ER for 20 years. This is by far the best dispatching job I have ever heard. Of the millions of trauma and gun shot wound calls i have taken this communication was spot on. I run life flight and trauma 1 so we get these all day, and we are the hospital for the police department. Sadly I have taken these calls when they are en route. Our trauma unit runs like a well oiled machine at all times. This dispatcher needs some kind of recognition because it’s not every day a dispatcher is so knowledge of the city, speaks so clearly and cares so much. BRAVO my guy!! Well done!!

As a police officer I hope I never have to make the radio call that Officer French and her partner had to make. But if I do I pray to God the dispatcher on the other end of that life line is as professional and reassuring as this one. Those of us on the streets appreciate our dispatchers more than we show sometimes.

It starts in the neighborhoods. The mayor and city council aren't on the streets shooting guns. It's our neighbors, nephews, uncle's and friends. We need to get them to be men and straighten the f*** up. Cops can only respond to the crime. It's up to us to help stop it.
