Sweet mercy, James. Take it from an old salt who's been on a few boats. That 500 is screaming that she's tired. I was on a friends monohull that was making noise like that. He'd hit a reef and the keel was hogged. The weirdest thing about the damage I noticed on his boat other than the bulkheads starting to separate and buckle... one, there was a good sized chunk out of his forward keel (the ballast stopped it from leaking), and two, there were spiderweb cracks around the fiberglass cockpit coaming and couch roof. I was told later that impact force will travel all the way through a hull to the furthest point where it will show up as a stress rupture, specially in fiberglass hulls, but in steel and wood hulls as well. Oh, my friends' boat broke up and sank a few months later. I know you've been through a similar experience with your other boat, Zingaro. I hope you're not on that Lagoon 500 anymore. The owner should know that boat is in serious trouble. Calm seas and fair winds, mon ami.

A few years ago I did a delivery of a Bavaria 42 monohull and she sounded just like the Lagoon. Cabin doors wouldn't close while underway and galley cabinet doors had similar issues. On this particular yacht the bulkheads fit in a channel and weren't glassed in, to allow for different interior layouts. Many lightweight production yachts that I have been on flex like mad and appear not to be made to take the rigours of ocean sailing, without protesting. Our trip on the Bavaria was 9 days and we had about 24 hrs of big seas and wind and she actually sailed quite well but OMG the noise!!!

Hi ZzZ, I own a 2002 ex charter production mono that makes similar noises and have sailed it from the Caribbean to Australia where we keep it. All of these plastic fantastics are built to a price point, and nearly all of them will be built with structural deficiencies. Juno, Beneteau, Bavaria, Lagoon, Fountaine Pajot, Hanse, among others, are all compromised to one degree or another, IMO. The only plastic fantastic that I might regard as a decently built boat would be the Leopards. The bottom line is that prospective boat buyers need to do their homework. It might make a lot of sense to buy an older boat built by a higher quality yard than to buy a new/newer boat built by one of these yards.

It would take little slippage to generate that level of noise. If you're unlucky it's an important structural component that has broken loose. We had the same problems with our Lagoon 630my, The noise comes from the cabinetry rubbing together. Big cats are designed to move a bit, but they have to have cabinetry that allows that. One channel went through every bulkhead and found the rotten one last. It wsa a lagoon 450. Probably the same problem. If you look underneath, the floor has seperated most likely. An inch or more , no connection with the rest of the boat. It is bent and is a little hard to get it back to correct shape, the rigging is pulling it and shaping it. Hopefully, I've get it right, the front, but maybe its the back, one bulkhead at a minimum is toast.

If the bulkhead of a large cat is made of plywood problems are almost certain to occur when Teh boat is ridden hard. The weight and the sheer forces are such. The noise was lower on the side with three cabins tells you immediately the nature of the damages. Sure the 500 is designed differently than the 45, but the problem is the materials used. Old boats, like yours were made of solid Fiberglas new ones use core to reduce weight. When sailing Evans redid their keel matrix they discovered that it had only been glued on and not integrated in the hull with fibreglass. It’s not only the multihull that suffer from poor construction and cheap solutions to complex problems. Still bulkhead inspection here is essential. Good sailing

Sounds like the creaking I heard in the 52 Beneteau oceanis 2021 monohull me and my family chartered for 2 weeks out of Florida. There was substanial creaking in the aft cabin area especially and in only moderate chop. They glue everything together and I think shit comes loose after constant use but not necessarily a bulkhead but poorly secured framing and such. On a catamaran i'd be freaking out.

I foresee that soon the market will be flooded with secondhand Lagoons from desperate owners struggling to get rid of their squeaky mousetraps at ridiculous prices. Even though, I wouldn’t ever even think of buying a Lagoon…..my life and those of my loved ones are far too precious to be taking the absurd risk of a cracked boat in the middle of an ocean !!

"the sound of a turd in a well" = the price of Lagoon cats falling...

Is it repairable?

At this point the best option for Lagoon owners with this problem is to fix the bulkheads. Costly-yes, but cheaper than new boat. Then go sailing.

Sounds horrific, glad Im not onboard, I dont know how far your going but Id bet you cannot get there soon enough! The creaks/movement looks like a accident waiting to happen.

A tornado dropped on my pontoon here on a lake in South Dakota. I had to jump out to save my life. I had PTSD for about a year or so. Any wind would make me freak out. We all know that Lagoon has bulkhead problems now. But my question is: Do you have PTSD from your incident south of Hawaii?

if anybody should know what a cat sound's like when it's breaking up
@mikejohnson5993 жыл бұрын
well i could never afford a boat like that anyway but it is exciting listening to it creak and groan down below while doing 10 knots. didnt even one of the americas cup boats break up while under way so i guess cats are always susceptible to this problem no matter how well or badly they are built

So James what your saying is, you would very highly recommend Lagoon Catamarans to everyone wanting a big beautiful live aboard boat….. as long as they don’t ever leave the dock. 😜 Is that what your Catamaran sounded like before it cracked up into pieces ?

I wonder if Lagoon should tell every one that their boat are class D vessels. Being an apartment boat would safe, but perhaps not when a hurricane like hurricane Ida hits the marina.

Unbelievable!!! So many complain about this Catamaran

Dare say I would rather sail the world in a 90's daewoo than a lagoon. Build quality is much safer :)

Sounds like a pirate ship of old, not a glassed-in modern cat.

The noise comes from a force called Racking Strain, generated as the two pontoons move in opposition to each other, simply defined as one pontoon is twisting upward and the other pontoon is twisting downward, going through the waves, causing the noise.

The wonderful sounds you get in boats and motorhomes where plywood rubs against other materials.

Way too much flex in the bulkhead. There is a weak spot that is close to breaking.
@lowryshank943 жыл бұрын
Sure sign is pull the salon doors shut. There should be a big gap at the bottom. You will see many Lagoons with cheap gate locks because the factory locks no longer work. You can tell by the boat ads which ones have broken bulkheads.

Check what Colin from Parlay Revival found in his Lagoon 450, he had to reinforce all the bulkheads, it was s ok Big the danage that Lagoon ended up recognizing structural failure on the design and now they have paid for part of the repair cost
@alexryan98693 жыл бұрын
You can see the door moving up and down. Don’t get in rough water there are some bad bulk heads. The structural integrity of that boat is bad.

Now is the boat flexible what is creaking might be the wood connected to the boat.alot of tight seams,Alitalia movement might creak

That's just insane. Yeah, I like the Lagoon design, but the build quality is obviously sub par! That sound as comforting as the noise, when I fell on my nose a couple of years ago, downhill on mountainbike, and broke my collar bone.
