This line of boats were built by BSI Marine in Lysekil, Sweden. The Najad yard were involved for early examples and the BSI started their own yard. Farr were commissioned for the hull design, but I don’t know to what extent they designed the rest of the boat. I own a 2000 Farr 56 PH. It’s a great but complex boat. The example in this video has a Lewmar Commander hydraulic setup like ours. That has two 24V electric motors to drive the hydraulic furlers and winches. The bow thruster needs to PTO. We have lines that pull the back stay blocks to the shrouds.

Kids are awesome and for new Dads and Moms major life changes are not always a great move during this period. Realistically anyone looking at punting $250000 is checking out 2017-2019 48 foot Beneteau 46.1 or similar.

My wife and I chartered a solo or non-skippered Dufour 41ft in the Caribbean last year. One of the dual helm wide stern boats you see everywhere now. Winds were no less than 20kts everyday. A couple days 30+. 5 to 8ft seas... Two things I absolutely hated about it was the pounding up wind, the other was the wild swinging on a mooring can or at anchor when the wind was blowing hard. We came from a racing background, and love to sail, not sit at anchor all day everyday. Pounding up wind, the cabinets doors would swing open, and half of them were loose on their hinges. Forward cabin hatch leaked, and the boat was a general piece of shit IMO. The cockpit winches were a stupid setup with only one winch on each side and set back inches from the helm, instead of more forward so you could look forward while trimming. "Oh, but that would get in the way of the guests during cocktail time at the dock".... sheesh

7:21 I beg to disagree here .. (again ) !! the wider aft isn’t so much do do with boat speed. It’s the spacious cockpit and swim platform that’s attract with this design.

Thats normal for Lagoons, they creak and crack then need $$$$$ in repairs . They are not bad if you take off the mast and just motor around a 3/4 throttle, they last a long time that way

Sometimes, if it happens during the storm, then only during the storm can be released because you need enough water under the boat. Options are Kaging or/and being pulled by another motorboat while tilting the mast at the same time.

Maybe it would be smart to be able to rigg the sailing yacht with a kite in case of a lost mast

I love this guy! I watch RAN Sailing and their boat building, and watched the catamaran boat build in Vietnam owned by the two Australians. As a mechanical engineer I learned a little. I followed James' talk-through easily and found it fun and excellent. I'll be back for part 2, soon!

Sorry James if I can’t get the anchor out in the tender it is by by boat. I am 63 and have had two back surgeries I am not dragging a anchor and chain under water. . My anchor weighs 70 kgs and my 1/2 chain weighs god knows what per foot. I might as well shoot myself before I try that performance.

Useful and helpful video. A couple of thoughts.... 1. The historical references you make about kedging did not use the big bow anchor. The kedge was a smaller lightweight anchor employed for this purpose. We are very lucky today to have very lightweight aluminium anchors like the Fortress which you can swim with. Swim one with a fender under your arm and it is childsplay. So #1 Do NOT mess around with your bow anchor. Deploy your lightweight aluminium emergency Fortress anchor on a long dyneema line. If you don't have one, get one. EDIT: If you can't afford a fortress and dyneema, get a Danforth and a length of polyprop. It will do the same job in an emergency for a pittance. There is another reason for doing this. If the waves are driving you ON TO the rocks, then deploying your bow anchor and chain will make you lighter and you will FLOAT HIGHER and be pushed further onto the rocks. Once you have your kedge anchor, (not bow anchor), tightened and holding ONE END of the boat, take a second line from bow or stern using a rolling hitch to the anchor line so that the kedge is holding both ends of the boat off the hazard. You can be very fancy by taking this line to a winch so that you can winch the boat off the reef from both ends. If you have enough crew, of course. As you describe, you want someone winching the boat off the hazard throughout the process. At this point you could deploy your bow anchor as you describe. However, there is not much point if the kedge anchor is is holding. You could be better off tying a fender to the end of the anchor chain and dumping the whole scope overboard. This will significantly lighten the boat and help you float off to he hazard. As well as your excellent suggestion to heel the boat using a rib, you can also empty the water tanks to reduce weight. As with dumping the bow anchor scope, this will help the boat float off the hazard. All the weight reduction should be donne AFTER the boat has been secured by the kedge. That is why you want to avoid dumping your bow anchor and chain off the bow while you are still being driven onto the rocks. Also, fairly obvious.... If the wind is blowing you off the rocks and you are pinned by current and waves, then you would to get full sails up. The above method is safe and more likely to save your boat. It relies on having a kedge anchor and not using the bow anchor as a kedge. Each has a specialist function and are designed accordingly. Just my suggestion

Walking with the anchor under water should be last resort. Instead of a dinghy, you can also use a lifebelt or vest, or even tie a few fenders together, to float the anchor to the desired spot.
