And threescore and two weeks it shall be built again: this is the duration of the Second Temple till the coming of TITUS THE SINNER, king of Rome; 434 years. During this period, he tells him, Jerusalem will again be inhabited. Seventy weeks (490 years) are determined upon your people and upon your holy city, to finish the transgression and to make an end of sins and to make reconciliation for iniquity(atone for there past transgressions), and to bring in everlasting righteousness (Temple service that brings righteousness), and to seal up the vision and prophecy (fulfill the promises of the prophets and end the prophetic era) and, and to anoint the Holy of Holies (the Temple)” Daniel 9:24 The angel Gabriel reveals to Daniel this additional understanding of the 70 years extending them from 70 years to 70 weeks of years stretching the time span to 490 years that span from the destruction of the First Temple to the Destruction of the second Temple. This prophecy also included a description of events that would unfold if the Jewish people did not repent properly. They stood in the place of the prophets and the divine voice was present. They raised the dead,healed the blind and much more. But the most important thing is their authority continued from Moses. Also why was Elijah still appearing to us? Why were our Sages as recent as 1927 predicting the Holocaust and so forth. The Temple was destroyed because it was to complete the atonement of Israel's sin during the first temple period as Daniel said. The one “ who will have nothing” is the Sadducee High Priest. We know the level of Holiness was decreasing in all of the world and that's why in the Mikra the last thing the Prophets say is to remember the Torah and the laws given at Har Sinai. They were literally preparing for the gradual decline of spirituality in the world and the destruction of the second temple which would come generations later. If after the last Prophet for 400 years the Sages of blessed memory could lead Israel, they could do so even without the same level of divine communication as their predecessors
