‘Listen to the people’: SA council cancels public consultation after banning Aus Day events

Sky News host Liz Storer says the Adelaide Hills Council needs to “listen to the people” after it banned Australia Day events.
The Adelaide Hills Council originally had planned to consult with the public to discuss whether they should allow Australia Day events again, but then cancelled it after a meeting on Tuesday night.
“This is ridiculous,” she said.
“One of the councillors had to put up a motion to be like ‘you know, maybe we should do our jobs and talk to the people that we’re supposed to be representing - how they feel about banning all events on Australia Day’.
“The rest of the council also elected by those people to represent them said ‘no, don’t give them a voice, we don’t want their opinions, it might turn out to be racist’.”

I'm english but what I've seen of Australia on the telly & what a wonderful modern beautiful country & all in 200 years! What did the aboriginal population do in the previous 10 thousand years? Let me think, - - - -, duh, NOTHING! So of course you should celebrate Australia day , your country fought against totalitarian regimes , it owes a huge debt to the people who founded the country, fly your flag with pride you've earned it! Not a bloody thing mate. You are damn right, we are Aussies. So it’s a good thing not to celebrate the day our country was invaded by a foreign military and claimed for the king of a foreign land. And to those who feverishly dispute it, take time to think about the actual facts. Most people want to keep Australia Day as Jan 26 as they don’t want the indigenous to win. That is a stupid motive.

What a stupid idea to think Australians want to be devided. The No Vote decided No devision of Australians for Australia. Sure the king claimed the land , but those naked with tools of sticks and stones fighting over women and food always on the move brought forward to the current century phones cars housing education proud of heritage will not be forgotten by the people of Australia.

Listening to the people, is not what councils think of doing in South Australia. They go on junkets to foreign land's where dictators rule for ideas of defiance of the people who reside in the state of south Australia . Councils and councillors should be a voluntary basis the mayor also voluntary and held to the highest laws of the land. Working alongside the people for the people and comunity.

The thing i don't get is , the council people celebrated Australia day all their life too , in council, so why when in the job only. So i call that racist towards Australians. I will always celebrated Australia day, because Australia would not be what it was, till Labor now. We convict heritage are proud what they turned Australia in to, and even the indigenous have a better country now, apart for the ones in politics, never satisfied. I believe no council should have that right to ban a national holiday, that should be up to no one , rather racist towards the people of Australia.

Ive expensively researched the whole Australia day debate. I discovered that on every day of the year, except 1, somthing occured that may offend a group of people or intividual. That difinitive one day that nothing of any noteworthy significance occured is the 4th of July. This neglected and historicaly event devoid day could be the opportunity Australians should take to show the world how respectful, honouring and inclusive we are of all people and nations around the world.

Councils are not an example of democracy in action. The people don’t vote for issues, they have a tiny quorum that make decisions which can be far reaching in the secrecy of Council Committee meetings. The people have no say on what goes on. Time for a complete overhaul of the council system.

If the council is not acting in good faith, don't pay your rates. Go to council meetings become more active in your local communities - stop electing these banal officials. They are public figures, record what they say in council meetings, ask them hard questions based on facts - relay what is said to your friends and relatives, post it to social media. If they are bad faith actors they will expose themselves.

To many polies seem to think their Job is to decide things, they seem to have forgotten that the only reason we have them is to go out and do what we the people want, even if they themselves don't agree or support it. As soon as you take this type of position you give up your right to decide anything, your there to enact the will of the people and not some tiny fraction of the people, the majority of the people. I am so sick of things like this where someone who is supposed to be doing what they were told gets confused and decides to do what they want, we the people tolerate it so we don't have to take on the responsibility personally I guess.

Do it before the actual day though, since the actual day is a public holiday and no one would be there... Organise a BBQ and lots of flags and stuff. Get the local high school music students down to play a string of iconic Australian music like Land Down Under, Great Southern Land and obviously the national anthem... Probably skip songs like You're The Voice and Beds Are Burning to avoid confusing people about what you're there for.
