Listening Room Tour 5: Dual C939 Cassette Deck

I had this Dual C939 console-style cassette deck restored a few months ago in 2020. I have owned the deck for over 3 1/2 years after purchasing it from a tube stereo repair shop in a town nearby.
In this short video I will provide and overview of this unique cassette deck, its functions and how to record part of a song from 1980 called "Tired of Toein the Line," by Rocky Burnette. I bought a sealed 1980 original of Rocky's LP from Discogs.com. I use a NOS (New Old Stock) Sony UX-Pro 90 cassette tape (still sealed) from 1992 to do the demo recording. This was my first tape deck back 1980. Back than this model was a discontinued model that sold for half the list price. It served me well during the eighties and got replaced by a Sony TC-K770ES in the early nineties which btw. offered clearly superior sound quality compared to the Dual. Well,my impression of this deck is that it was top class in the late seventies up to around the mid eighties and it came at at least half the cost that a slightly better (japanese) deck would have cost me at that time. However,with the rise of CD tape decks got way better fast during the second half of the eighties and early nineties. So the C939 became obsolet.

The top cover of your deck is not fully snapped into place. So you habe that nasty gape above the "Pause" button.

The deck only looks like a dual capstan, but it is not. Only on pinch rolle is active while playing, depending on the direction. It's auto reverse single capstan. I've repaired one of that decks a while ago. Including the mentioned motor and belt problems, many old pots and elkos where out of spec and the record play switch was a nightmare to clean up. What kind of replacement pinch roller was used to restore your deck ? Dual used a highly integrated special build here and I've still not found an adequate replacement.

I’ve read comments from people who became really frustrated working on this model of deck. Lucky I had the service manual. I am not certain about the pinch roller, but I thought he told me they made one for it.

My unit is playing slightly too fast after replacing the belts. Is there a pot to adjust speed?
