I alas sold the Cotter some years ago. Now I have a Bellari, a Mike Sanders Quicksilver and two custom-made SUT's using mike transformers. And I am back to using the Coral B777 cartridge, among others in my collection - Denon 103, 103R, 160, 304 and Dynavector 10A plus the Ruby.

A very nice selection of cartridges! About six months ago I acquired a Hana Umami Blue MC cart. With my new DIY stereo rack I’m able to have two turntables. I use the Bob’s devices Sky 40 SUT with the Hana cart going into a Sunvalley tube phono preamp. It handles both MM and MC carts. I also bought a Lounge Copla head amp also feeding into the MM of the Sunvalley. For fun, I pulled out my Stanton 681eee MM cart. Sounds very nice. So what kind of music do you enjoy most? My favorite is jazz.

I tried a MC back in the late 1980s and never looked back. I have never used a transformer with my MC cartridges. I used a Threshold M1 impedance matcher for 30 years. I have had Denon 300, 103 D, and sumiko blue point 3 low output nude cartridges. I bent the stylus on the 300, the 103D is a backup now. The Sumiko is on a VPI cliftwood and I use a Jolida JD 9 tube output head amp. I absolutelly Love this combination and plan to hot rod the JD9. Its very quiet between tracks on custom, Klipsch Belle speakers.

Thanks for the video. I use MC step-ups into my MM input instead of using the active MC input. I find that it (the MC-tranformer+MM inout) gives a lot more dynamic and interesting sound and therefor give me much more joy in music listening. BUT I have also tried to optimize. Being not scared of math and spreadsheets I have tried a lot of combinations. Also some that should be avoided, e.g. very high output voltage that should overload your phono input. Spreadsheets calculations and mathematical predictions does not seem to correspond to (my) reality. So I try a lot, listen, and dont give a thought to the math :-) What is your experience?

A lot of mm and mc cartridges of many brands were tested. The mc's the winners.

Luxman is one of the best brands in hi-fi ,even in the 70´s or more in the 70´s they had a really high quality of sound as you have it there, the variable output was a fine thing for having a equalizer so it could drop the volume to the same equalization used with other sources. About cd players working faulty ,in late 80´s i had my first cd player playing at the time in my living-room but never failed it was a PD-7300 from pioneer ,that after i bought more two for being much better in sound quality and i was ofered one, a CEC or chuodenki,a belt driven cd player and looking diferent from all others, that only recentelly i knew they were still being sold but i even almost had a stroke because they ,the brand was asking 36.000€ for my cd player belt-driven, when ofered i check it and in magazines and early internet and remenber one of the critics saying ,"...it sounds perfect and is the most analogue cd player i ever seen" ,most of the internet was proven to be used to watch porn any categorie one can feel it´s better aid to play five against one ,a old game played centuries before internet, but i never had problems with cd players and some friends had mostly sony or pioneer cd players but expensive ones and they used to tell me that they had already went to a technician(a curious guy without a job)and they changed lasers but i never thought it was the real problem, and they started to trow them to the garbage to what i said to all that i wanted them to colect to do not trow around 1.000€ at the time for the garbage and i started to disassemble the high-end cd players from sony and pioneer mainly ,one thing i notice first was the grease like you refer but more important is next to ,what call play head ,where all reading system is when next to the rotating engine the grease starts to acumulate and with a litle dust that enters inside would not allow all head to be next to the cd part where all info is stored that is the first thing the player reads so i cleaned it and also like you did ,some head the laser mirror with a lityle cotton on top ,so i cleaned it also and did this to all that weren´t working not cleraning entirelly the metal rods ,litle ones chromed where the head with the laser goes from the starting point to the end of the cd ,well aqll worked like new again but what to do with what i call expensive cd players having already 3 very good ones, i knowing a lot of people i went to a neighborhood that was the first i lived in when returning from working in Africa ,that they would cross path with the rich fellows i had known since i was a kid so for what today is 200€ i sold to them cd players that the poorest ones didn´t had possibilities of buying and they dreamed about having a better player than at the time 50€ sony cd player and for 200€ they could have almost 1000€ cd players looking pristeen, they would only cross path with the others i knew from rich families when going to the neighborhood that i lived for 10 years after returning from africa to buy drugs and with the drug money they would buy from me cd players the best they had dreamed about, later i notice that not only doing what i already did to fix them was the part that tops the cd inside so it can be rotating perfectelly to be readen by the laser, and all cd players given to me all had new lasers but that only lasted from 3 to 6 monthes at the most ,so i with time noticed that the part on top of the cds had a ltle round circle made of felt but more syntectic type and with the years that circle of felt would worn out, i bought a meter of that felt when a store that was open since the 40´s sold every thing you needed to make a suit or a ...anything one could need several types of cloth and zippers for the denim trousers etc. and i would make a model in carbox material and than cuit a new litle circle of felt and glued it to the place where the worn out piece was, this was the second thing i learned about fixing a cd player with heavy use, so my business of selling good cd players in perfect working condition for prices till 200€, i had bought a minidisc deck and one day i notice some weren´t recording or playing so i notice the laser could be tuned like a two point tuneable perfect tuned laser, this i did it to a cd player and even better it´s like tuning a play head on the deck to make it sound perfect while reading old tapes, my first standart pioneer expensive cd player works today like new at the first 4 years only when i was in vacations it was disconected ,normally i would fall drunk and high in the living room couch, after drinking a cofee or a line or two to improve the alcohol efect, this always playing a cd with soft music so i guess it never was disconected,later i bought a average deck from pioneer also a CT-S603S ,that also played and repeat every night while sleeping for 9 to 10 hours so the cd player had some rest, the most funny situation i had was when a friend that paid for his ES sony cd player,i think more than 5.000€´s and it stoped playing ,he was not happy but it had the circuits made of gold and one was the transport and other component had all functions and a display the other didn´t had a display , i could get him his more than 5.000€ cd player in the 90´s that it was much more valuable than todays money, so i fixed it and only charged him 500€ ,with 350€ i went running to buy a restored light blue metalized 1975 BMW 2002(german kids would stop and take photos and asked me if it was really a bmw), with the 150€ that were still profit i bought several grams of coke and heroin ,my neighboor was the nº1 retail man in my city and i sold him a sony(that in his sight was the best brand in the world)cd player for only 50€ and it costed 400€, he become a close friend of mine he lived next door since 1978 till 2002 when he was arrested and the business went to my right side neighboor all was good and the left side neighboor was out in 2013 for good behaviour ,than a war started and my house was in the midle but i could have my 5 cars opened with windows down to dry the humidity gathered in the winter , talking about a 50´s car and others from the year 65 to late 90´s of last century because when going to work in agriculture,my family business it was sunny but if it started to rain i used to think that in my city wasn´t raining but it had rained and when at home thinking i would have the cars filled with water somehow the windows and doors were closed after having dinner my front neighboor knocked at my door and tells me , "i notice you had your cars opened and i went there to close them so the water didn´t enter the cars" to what i was thanking him and even took 25€ from my wallet to give him but he wouldn´t received it saying i was his long time neighboor and wasn´t like the others, have to add that at the time a lot of families lived with at the most 500€ a month others weren´t so lucky but i never closed a door with a keyor whenever feeling like it i left the windows opened . I have a 5 year degree in a university of informatic engeniering ,the reason why i received good money everymonth from my work plus the profit divided by 4 families from agriculture business,also why i have a big colection of music and hi-fi components being the older a early 60´s dynaco tube amplifier 70 watts of clean sound but almost 30 minuts till everything is ready. Sorry for having drift from the main subject, i guess with age one starts to remenber one thing and one thing leads to another, toend i have to say that my PD-7300 from 87 is still working with quality and really sounds good ,i even bought a internal new dac for it, paid almost 3€´s and the laser was stoped being sold in 2016 for 400€ so i found one in italy and on ebay the seller told me that the cd player was never opened so i bought it and for 36€+32€ for transport, i got a almost unused cd player like mine first standart size pioneer that after cleaning it and tunning it it seemed new again, like mine

@VintageLuxmanStereoCollector
@VintageLuxmanStereoCollector 5 ай бұрын
Hey Daniel, thanks for watching and for your comments, both valid. The Dynavector 20x2 is a better sounding cart. Better highs, lows and more detail too. It wasn’t too long afterwards I broke the cantilever when the tone arm went sideways. I sent it off to Soundsmith for a retipping and better cantilever. I sold the Bob’s Devices 3440A SUT after getting the Sky 40. I sold it to a guy named Rex who was happy to get it. Turns out he showed up in a Stereophile video and article for Michael Fremer’s clean power upgrade to his house. Rex was one of two consultants. That SUT I believe had ratios of 1:9 and 1:16 which were fine, but the Sky 40 has 1:20 and 1:40 ratios better suited to my two carts. The proprietary winding process Bob has CineMag do for him is an improvement. The old SUT was a little dull sounding. Was the Sky 40 price of $1325 worth it? Absolutely! I now use it with an external tube phono preamp made by Sunvalley in Japan. Herb Reichert from Stereophile uses a Sky 20 with his. I bought a Denon 103 cart but more recently I use a Hana Umami Blue LOMC. It’s to die for. Be well and Happy New Year!

Hmmm. What kind of cartridge are you using? Mm or MC? Have you cleaned your RCA connections?

Techniques Super Track Plus (It's like a $300.00 Cartridge) checked RCA, but they are soldered into back of turntable, You can't just easily swap them out. @@VintageLuxmanStereoCollector

Great video. I have a Stanton 681eee and use Pickering micro 4 stylus, they are easier to get, 3 grams weight. For full auto I use a sl 1950 with all the spindles. Not the greatest turntable ever made but will do 6 at a time. Never seen that Pioneer before, need to look for one.

Old video but I'll comment anyway. Best turntables with a reasonable price now are 1975 to 81. I have a mk2, almost mint, JVC QL A7, and Denon 1200, 3 SLDL 1's. On and on. Direct drive, heavy and late 70's is the way to go.

I also have my late 70s Pioneer PL-630 direct drive and fully automatic👍👍 Thanks for watching and commenting.

Very nice rack and very nice job. Although I really cringed when he crosscut the shelves agains the rip fence. That is a procedure that is generally considered to be unsafe. If I missed an offset block and the miter gauge I apologize. Very nice job. You also have some spectacular components.

Hey Tom, As a former Industrial Arts teacher you are absolutely right about the crosscut of the shelves. I don’t remember an offset block. I didn’t say anything since it wasn’t my shop. Thanks for your nice comments! PS, I’ve bought more gear since then😳

The first thing you do when you have skipping is to look at the eye patten with an Oscilloscope this will give you a hint about the tracking and the laser power and if you need to clean it. The white grease is silicone and to be honest should be used in those players.

Wish I had an oscilloscope at the time. My tech has one for $75/hour. Yes, white grease should be used, you are correct. I sold the player and now use an Audiolab 6000 CD transport and an Oppo BDP-105 blue ray player. I miss all those buttons on the Luxman

Your sand paper grits were very high. Aiming to about 1200 for the finish would be better. 100 at the start is way too coarse
