I went on a road trip visiting national parks across the west.. we were in Utah driving on this highway where there wasn't even a gas station in a 100 mile stretch - not a soul in sight. I played In the Shadow of our Pale Companion as we rode across this breath taking scenery.. It's something I'll never forget. These places are already more beautiful than words can describe and Agalloch has this ability to put that emotion into something that speaks on a human level. To me, It invokes the essence of tribal/primal man and all aspects of nature - survival, endless landscapes, emptiness, uncertainty, beauty, sadness, hope. Thank you for being open-minded and appreciating the beauty that lies within their music.

Agalloch, the perfect accompaniment when hiking up the highest mountain top in Norway (and Scandinavia for that matter). The line: "If this grand panorama before me is what you call god Then god is not dead" Hits a bit differently when you can see almost nothing but nature for absolute (metric) miles around you. For some more music that has a very "nature vibe" I'd highly recommend checking out Negura Bunget (the Om album is a masterpiece) and the offshoot band Dordeduh. Both bands are Romanian and sing in Romanian by the way. Oh, and just because it's my latest obsession on the more "vibe" side of black metal I'll throw in a suggestion for Sylvaine as well (single person band with session musicians, the single person being female). Some great live session stuff to be found on youtube if you dare.

A lot of black metal is supposed to be droning, to elicit an almost meditative state; sort of like an "om" effect lol For example, BlackBraid, Wolves in the Throne Room to name a few. They almost want you to listen in the woods (In The Woods...another old school BM classic) and either meditate or zone out to. With Allogoch, not my fav, but Not Unlike the Waves is probably their best known song.

Agalloch's The Mantle is my 2nd-favorite album of all-time. You probably won't find a lot of metal bands like Agalloch because Agalloch were often heavily influenced by non-metal genres. On The Mantle for example, they were influenced by the neofolk genre and bands like Death In June and Sol Invictus (Agalloch even covered a Sol Invictus song on one of their EPs). Agalloch were also big into 80's cold wave music. Listen to the track "A Day out of Time" by Little Nemo, then listen to Agalloch's "Hallways of Enchanted Ebony" again. The guitar riff is near-identical, but Agalloch made it their own by metal-izing it. This is probably more information than anyone needed to know, but if you're an Agalloch fan, it's pretty cool to expand to other genres and hear the origins of what would later become the band's sound.

Man, I don't listen to metal as much as before, but your reaction made me want to revisit Agalloch's entire discography haha! They're so good. Whenever you have the time, you might want to check out Panopticon - Atmospheric black metal with bluegrass influences. Their album "Kentucky" is a good start, but their most recent effort "...And Again Into the Light" is also phenomenal. Also, post-metal is an awesome subgenre. It has similar vibes to atmospheric black metal in the sense that it focuses on atmosphere and layering, but the pacing is slower/more meditative. It also employs both singing/screaming. Many would recommend bands like Isis and Neurosis as introductions to post-metal, but I would personally recommend Latitudes' "Part Island", which is absolutely stunning!

imo its more than clever writing, it's brutally honest and dead on the money. This is the heart of the philosophical debate: does anything actually mean anything? is there any meaning at all? Is "meaning" a valid concept? Just what in the hell are we doing here? Why exist at all? Its worth noting in Shadow of our Pale Companion he kills himself, so its less about asking the question than it is a story of a man who is swept away by nihilistic despair, and whose answer to the question is "its not worth existing." Or, its a metaphor that equates death acceptance to a sort of willing sacrifice of the inner self that desires that hypothetically better world. thoughts?
