Those three together made the band wayyy bigger than the sum of the parts. I've always suspected Shag was a bit insecure about that. Anyway, the impact of those special three is even more obvious now since Dimmu has not been able to recreate this kind of magic since firing them.

Same for me during my teens, except I had their earlier albums on repeat. This was probably the first band that taught me what musical arrangement and composition was. I had never heard anything like it before, and I spent many a night in my bed room in low light tumbling deeper and deeper down the rabbit hole with their music.

If you do Progenies live, you should absolutely do an older version like 2004 at Ozzfest (which is also easily available on youtube) rather than a newer one like Forces of the Northern Night (or just do both!). As you heard from the studio version, Vortex is the star of the show, and it's also one of Mustis's best compositions (both of whom are no longer in Dimmu, sadly) so a version that has both of them performing would be great to see. It's funny too, in the Northern Nights show they had a full choire doing Vortex's part and it was still not nearly as amazing as the original. Great video as always Kaiya!

Damn it, why didn't the recommendations include Mourning Palace or Kings of the Carnival Creation D: Both are pretty insane and I would have placed over Gateways since it's like, something standalone and she was a guest singer cuz no Vortex. Anyway, this band was my introduction to extreme metal (first one with predominantly growls) and I will always appreciate them for that, but bands like Emperor (with their Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk album) and Limbonic Art (with the album Moon in the Scorpio) blew them out of the water for me in symphonic black metal, the atmosphere and compositions in those are just something else, genius and timeless (kinda resembling Epica's). Whereas Dimmu feels like they bring/add the blackened influence into symphonic metal, for those two other bands black metal and symphonic metal are blended as if one whole, to perfection

You finally did Dimmu Borgir! I knew you would like it, great video! I think symphonic metal is where it's at. You've done symphonic deathcore with Lorna Shore, symphonic power metal with Epica, and symphonic black metal with Dimmu. Next should be symphonic death metal with SepticFlesh or Fleshgod Apocalypse. Or go symphonic avante garde breakcore with the band Igorrr.

This year was the only time they played with a full orchestra and choir. They did this in Oslo (Gateways was from that show) and also at Wacken that year. So only two shows. I was at the Oslo show. It was truly amazing. Dimmu Borgir are sometimes referred to as the dark brother of Nightwish (a symphonic metal band more in the lines of Epica). Their current singer, Floor Jansen, is something else.

2:50 that's a phaser or a flanger. Whenever an audio signal is slightly out of phase you'll get that effect. Whenever two sound waves (the left and right signal in a stereo signal) are out of phase, there will be zero sound because the sound waves cancel each other out. When a signal is close to being out of phase, but not completely, you get that effect. Usually you don't want this effect while producing music, because it sounds weird and it weakens the signal (making the mix less impactful), but there are plugins and guitar pedals that can do this effect in real-time, as it is sometimes desirable.

Dimmu Borgir, Gorgoroth, Satyricon, Mayhem and other Norwegian 90's metal bands used to hang at all the same pubs/bars in Oslo. Bumped into them more than once, the folks in Dimmu Borgir were always really cool and down to earth listening to Barbie Girl and having a laugh whilst some of the other bands would be the super-pretentious "I only listen to metal and never laugh" type. Their approach-ability made me like them a lot more than the other bands, and I appreciate being able to hear the lyrics. Puritania and their cover of Burn in Hell are the songs that got me into them, along with The Serpentine Offering and Progencies'. I feel like Epica is the soundtrack to Skyrim and Dimmu Borgir the soundtrack to Fallout.

Watching this makes me curious about how you'd respond to Igorrr - Le Petite Moineau. The primary vocalist weaves between Opera and distortions with the musical backdrop of metal guitar and chaotic synth, etc. Skip looking for lyrics because it's a newly constructed tongue. They're very restricted on how often they go all out. Rammstein only does the big production shows.

Another thing, even though DB is considered as a Symphonic "Black Metal" band, they actually are way, way, way more melodic and more pleasant to hear than most of real Black Metal bands (IMO) because those bands are pure aggressive, raw and extreme sound, if you hear real Black Metal bands as Mayhem, Emperor, Gorgoroth, Dark Throne, Burzum or Dark Funeral you will notice the difference (not my fav style but I like some of them)

I'd say Burzum can be pretty chill too, the Filosofem album is mostly what I'd call atmospheric black metal.

Dark Fortress morphed into a symphonic metal band over time, the early releases were much more straightforward. I believe one of the early keyboardist was Dana from the all-female death metal band "Mythic" , and her contributions tended to be more of the drone and ambient sort. I forget whether she actually sang melodic vocals or not, I don't think so. several lineup changes led to differences in the core of the writing., with the band's subsequent keyboardist,, "Mustis" being a brilliant classical pianoist and his influence is all over the band's symphonic stylistic change. Somewhere on KZbin is a video of him in a practice room playing "Progenies of the Great Apocalypse" alone on solo classical piano and it is spellbinding. this band catches a lot of shit for actually being commercially viable, and their albums have sold very very well.. but they do have Roots going back to the earliest second wave of Norwegian black metal and those are pretty solid roots. of course black metal is a highly divisive and nitpicky genre with many self-proclaimed Arbiters of what is and isn't "TRVE" ( Not mispelled) on the scene. Largely all horseshit opinions when what it comes down to is if you like the music or not.. as opposed to whether the band is super obscure and has only recorded a four song demo on a boom box or perhaps a potato.. only to bury it in someone's backyard instead of releasing it outright. Yeah, that kind of mentality actually exists within the scene, the more obscure ...the more valid somehow the releases are. Lame. As for this band, guess who a MAJOR influence was from the very start? Yep...KING DIAMOND.

Yes they do do this Live, which is why you should have picked the Live version with the full orchestra. Unfortunately the guy who did the clean vocals part left the band about 14 years ago. So they are sung by a female now.

If you want to see some american Symphonic Metal I think the currently most interesting band is Seven Spires. I'd reccomend the songs This God is Dead ft Roy Khan which IMO is their best work to this point, Gods of Debauchery(do the music video for this one, it's great) and The Cursed Muse all from their newest album. Their female vocalist Adrienne has an air of destiny around her, like Simone from Epica or Floor from Nightwish. Also pretty please do a Part 2 for Epica!
