To me their secret weapon is their drummer Cavs (Michael Cavanaugh) I just love all of his grooves and fills. He even put out his own album that's entirely percussion
@threestringsomg2 жыл бұрын
Agreed about KGLWs drummer/s....great....but sometimes the snare is poorly produced (e.g. throughout Sketches) and makes odd album or song irritating if they overlook the drumming a bit in mix...though nothing in their catalogue is as bad as on Cirith Ungols King of Hell. Made all the worse by excellent songs wallpapered with constant drumming clicks so loud it makes it sound like the producer forgot to hide the click track....sry just noticed my accidental crossing over of two CU albums....the terrible production of snare can be found all the way through the album One Foot In Hell....
@listersays2 жыл бұрын
I feel the same about Maximum the Hormone's album Bu-ikikaesu. The snare is so ringy and ugly lol but hopefully on a good enough album it's just a nitpick
@threestringsomg2 жыл бұрын
@@listersays yeah it's a shame when it happens....but I find made worse when the songs are clearly very good....my heckles go up everytime I've tried to hear through the wall of clicks on every song on One Foot In Hell ...maybe the vinyl version will be better I don't know....but as a fan with all their CDs it's so obvious im surprised it's not been remastered....

As a Gizz Head I was really excited to see your reaction to that guitar tone on KGLW when it kicks in and I'm glad you enjoyed it. Rats Nest is just that dialed up to 11 with a crazy narrative thread so if you enjoyed that, there is so much more to discover. As for the microtonal stuff, volumes 2 and 3 (KG and LW) are a great listen but volume 1 (Flying Mircrotonal Banana) is where it is at. Also, that "curdled milk" pressing is SUPER fresh!

"Is it right or is it wrong? I can't tell!" Maybe not a big surprise but they can definitely capture that feeling in 12-TET when they want to.

I've listened to all of their microtonal albums quite a few times and the ear eventually gets used to the microtones. At first it was somewhat painful for me as well, but now I think it sounds absolutely amazing. I hope they keep making these. You should really try K.G. in the future, which is similar to this one but still quite different in many places. But try Polygondwanaland next. It's their best album IMO.

They have a set of instruments specifically modified for playing microtones, with a different fretboard. There's a fun story behind their first microtonal instrument, Stu's Flying Microtonal Banana. Basically, microtones are steps between halftones, 24TET instead of our usual 12.

It's so exciting to see other people discover King Gizzard's music, and your reactions are genuine! but... you still have a universe to discover within the music of KG, or rather a Gizzverse and 18 more albums. King gizzard is easily my favorite band and I love seeing your reaction and enjoyment listening to them. They like to explore the areas of music that are untouched by popular music and very often use strange time signatures and poly rhythms, as well as old school recording techniques. Some people expecting normal rock beats and such don't get it at first, but if you appreciate art in music and creative exploration of sound, there is no better band then giz. Hope you listen to many more soon!

Gizz is the most wonderful rabbit hole to fall down and with such a diverse discography and prolific work ethic you'll be well catered for for a long time to come! Hope your day is a swell one! I reccomend either I'm In your Mind Fuzz or Nonagon Infinity for the definitive "Gizz Experience", obviously the companion album KG too, but Gumboot Soup and their most recent, Omnium Gatherum, which are collections of may different styles from Jazz to Thrash to Hip hop, are great places to start off with to see what vibe of theirs you wanna get stuck into!

Glad you enjoyed it! Their other 2 microtonal albums are more than worth checking out, especially the first. Their evolution is incredible to experience from the beginning, but diving into random albums is also a great way to go. I first heard them on their Murder of their Universe album and was immediately hooked. It's a guitar and story driven record with a super catchy flow similar to Nonagon Infinity.

I'm probably going to be laughed at for saying this, but I think this would go through the stratosphere if they had somehow gotten Shakira to do at least some of the vocals. I love the instrumentation and melody. A vocalist of Shakira's ability would seal the deal on it for me.
