I am glad you enjoyed our music. I always gravitated towards habasha music as well. Diriyam by Khadija Kalanjo was shot in mid 1980s during the new year eve. Yes, Kalanjo (which means beauty) she was beyond Beyonce for Somalis during that time lol. Kisses and hugs

Unbelievable, you have chosen three very popular and well known songs by three amazing singers, who were the very top singers in 1980s in Somalia. First song is sung by, yes, Khadiijo Qalanjo (your second pronunciation of her second name is correct. It is Qalanjo, not "Qalango" and is pronunciated as it is written.) She and her band (Shareero) are singing about a nomadic cultural song. This song came out around 1987/88. It was very, very popular and Qalanjo was one of the most beloved singers of that decade in '80s. The attire they are wearing is called 'guntiino', traditional Somali women's clothes. The snake-like necklace she is wearing is called 'kuul' in Somali. I heard Ethiopian national TV channel frequently used to air this song. Legend has a visiting African president in late '80s asked Qalanjo -- as she was popularly known -- to marry him. She refused. He was mesmerized by her beauty and voice after she sung at an official ceremony welcoming him to Mogadishu. He was the president of Chad at that time. Second song is by Cabdullaahi Sulfa (Abdullahi Sulfa), who was the Michael Jackson of Somalia in from 1985 to 1990. His songs were unique and very, very popular. Beloved by the youth of mid to late '80s. This one particular song you are listening is called 'Duufaan iyo Dabeel' (also could be spelled Dabeyl). It is personally one of my favourites. The very words of the song you are listening in the clip is, with its rough English translation: *Dambi daad kaama qaadee (Sin cannot be washed by (even) the flood) Dulmi Daa'inkey daah ma saaree (God does not cover (hide) injustices/oppression) Dad iyo duur mala isku deeyee (You can't let people and jungle mingle) Dareenkaa lahaawee* (Keep your feelings) In rough English translation of this part, it might possibly lose its meanings; however it is a wonderful song in Somali with deep meanings. Third song is a very powerful nationalist song, sung by the late Faadumo Qaasim HIlowle. She was, like Sulfa, top two or three female singers in the 1980s in Somalia. She had a very soothing voice, beloved by generations of Somalis. This particular song is called 'Dalkeygoow' (Oh, my country). She first sung it in 1993 at Addis Ababa, host of one of the first Somali peace conferences. Many famous and well-known Somali singers went to that peace conference in the heyday of Somali civil war. You can find a clip of this song from that conference on KZbin.

Wow! Thank you for that! I didn't choose them, a very wise and well rounded subscriber chose them and recommended I listen to them, particularly because they sounded similar to Eritrean music I've used in my videos. I'm happy that he recommended these songs because he chose a nicevariety of them to represent Somalia. Thanks again!

OMG! You correctly articulate it. Especially Khadijo's music with the naked laces had bn even has been frequently televised on every tv music programs here in Ethiopia. Am really nostalgic to DIRIYAM music among other east Afr musics (Eritrea Ethiopia Somalia SUDAN). I guess DORIAM music meaning is abt drum or DURBAN.

The last song by the late Faatuma Qaasim (May Allah have mercy on her) was quite emotional. As she suffers from a painful distress caused by being away from home. She recounts how the vicious civil war in her home country had forced her to flee for her life. The arduous journey she had to make in search for a safe haven. And the hardships she has to endure as a refugee. Indeed, the song is too long to write down, but the clip you just played goes like this: "O my country, your land is rich in resources, O my country, your breeze is so sweet, To wander around the world begging strangers, To become a stateless person and end up in a refugee camp, Was never my choice but a necessity".

I red some comments, most of friends they wrote ''Somalian''when they want to write something about citizens from Somalia also the channel owner used all the time somalians but that's incorrect. You have to say ''Somali'' instead of Somalian. Also if you want to mention Somali citizens as a plural say ''Somalis'' not Somalians. Now the upcoming friends will get my point. Thank you

Yes, third one is so heart touching😢 it is all about the war and conflicts. It says, my country, you're one of the beautiful country in the world, and the reaso I fled is the conflict but it is not necessarily I have left without reason or I hate you. They sang at the first Somalian peace conference which was held held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia in early 1992

Same here I find my self listening to the old school music be it Tigrinya, amharic, english even some Indian and Arabic music, the older the better. I just feel there was more soul in, it genuine and not so superficial. One of my favorite is Kiros Alemayo .

Too bad they didn't send you the classics Magool, Khadra Dahir, Hasan Adan, Zeynab Cige, Sado Ali or Tubeec. The ones you listed are mostly listened by southerns. Most of somalis won't even understand the words because, the accent and words are extremely limited to very small geographic area in Somalia.

@Dhul Qarnayn bro don't be blinded by ignorance; Do your own research. A good example is arab countries, even though they're 100% Arabs (ethnically); they've different nationalities like Bahraini,Yemeni etc. if you live in Djabouti you're djaboutian, if you live in Kenya you're Kenyan (you can Google it).
