This because in the chorus she is talking about how devils roll the dice while angels roll their eyes. This means that thought this unpredictable moments, where everything could go either way, devils take the bet, they risk everything. fun fact for you as a first time listener: all too well was originally more than 10 minutes long and the only reason it has a co writer is bc taylor needed help cutting it down and structuring it. liz rose (the co writer) said the lyrics and all that were all taylor which is just amazing to me. she also wrote the entirety of speak now by herself and if you watch any behind the scenes in the studio or even her new documentary, she almost always writes the whole song start to finish by herself. there’s also a clip in her doc of her singing at 13 and she was like “i wrote this five minutes ago, i can’t even remember the lyrics yet.” and goes on to sing the lyric “I wonder if a sad heart can feel the warmth of my hand” like what???? when i was 13 i was wondering how long it would take for my frozen pizza to cook in the oven. her writing ability baffles me.

I had a very similar experience! Loved Taylor from TOMG-Speak Now era and fell off listening to only singles after that. But then in 1989 era when the media was spinning the narrative that she was playing the victim and that she was withholding her music from streaming because she was greedy and that she still hadn’t stated her political views in order to maintain a large fan base, etc. It wasn’t until 2021 when Red TV was released that I got back on the Taylor train and realized how much of that was spun by media and misogyny!

I used to not like taylor because I thought she was a b*tch, cause everyone said that. I liked her songs but not her. After reputation came out I started to do a little research, so my negative opinion went away. Lover came out and I sat down and REALLY did my research and well, I became a fan. It's absolutely impossible to not love taylor when you know her story and pay atention to each era and lyrics.
