The Syrian army could also be facing the parallel to the Afghan government. As soon as it's sensed that a great power is no longer backing you, every officer thinks for himself and wants to switch sides, rather than be a target on a list from the newly formed regime.

Russia possibly losing the naval base in Syria is a big blow to being a "world power," at least in his eyes. They are also having a difficult time in Africa as well. along with being an economic mess. If Putin/Russia can't help their "friends" then how can they be a trusted partner? Assad is in big trouble and if he goes, Putin looks even weaker than he already is. It is my personal belief that Trump will use Putin's weakness to his advantage. Trump wants "winners," not losers.

Europe might send forces to the free parts of Ukraine, but they won't enter the front. Africa, well that's complicated. But they at the most get some help, but no one will start WWIII over them. And much of Asia is doing their own thing. Some places there have their conflicts, but those won't ignite WWIII.

There are separate vested Russian interests in Ukraine and Syria. The former offers more natural resources, including a massive oil field reportedly on par with those seen in OPEC countries. The latter is more about Russian military prestige; with US forces occupying the relatively miniscule oil fields in Eastern Syria, there is little for Russia to gain.

Before the "war to end all wars" the experts were saying that the world's economies were too interlocked to ever fight against each other. Then Sarajevo. Then Czarist Russia entered to defend the Serbians and then.the Germans entered to defend Austria-Hungary...and then...and then........ The point is, that a nation's interest can be manipulated by a strong man like Putin. Counting on rational actors to prevent a vaster conflict is not wise.

It has been suggested that the extensive sanctions on Syria by 'the West' has resulted in a very poorly resourced army that cannot or will not fight vigorously against the ISIS/ Taliban rebels. The problem is that if this reinvigorated taliban succeeds in overthrowing Assad, significant numbers of Syrians will want to get out - and will head towards western Europe. Even more boat people coming across the channel. 'Interesting times' indeed...

I still remember when ISIS defeated Russian forces twice at Palmyra, including a 40-plus strong Spetsnaz team wiped out within 20 minutes of disembarking from their helicopter. No doubt, such stories still reverberate today in special forces units throughout the world. Russians were too focused on egomaniacal PR stunts (Palmyra was all over the news at the time), than they were about securing strategic ground.
