Russia possibly losing the naval base in Syria is a big blow to being a "world power," at least in his eyes. i don't think the Russians will give up their strategic naval base at Tartus - that's why they helped Assad in the first place.

I highly doubt that Russia would accept to abandon the Tartous naval base, their only strong point in the Mediterranean.

It has been suggested that the extensive sanctions on Syria by 'the West' has resulted in a very poorly resourced army that cannot or will not fight vigorously against the ISIS/ Taliban rebels. The problem is that if this reinvigorated taliban succeeds in overthrowing Assad, significant numbers of Syrians will want to get out - and will head towards western Europe. Even more boat people coming across the channel. 'Interesting times' indeed...

Russia will have to choose between holding on to their Tartus naval base in Syria and Ukraine. They can't fight on both fronts. Which is most important to them, that is the real question.

I still remember when ISIS defeated Russian forces twice at Palmyra, including a 40-plus strong Spetsnaz team wiped out within 20 minutes of disembarking from their helicopter. No doubt, such stories still reverberate today in special forces units throughout the world. Russians were too focused on egomaniacal PR stunts (Palmyra was all over the news at the time), than they were about securing strategic ground.
