Russia has been acting with increasing aggression for 20 years against neighboring countries. They’ve violated Swedish and Finnish territorial waters with submarines, they’ve performed “training” nuclear bombing runs against Stockholm and Helsink, infrastructure installations in the far north of both countries have mysteriously failed, they’ve been flying fully armed fighter jets with transponders turned off dangerously close to both civilian and military aircraft over the baltic, they’ve been ingaged in massive influence campaigns and so on. And if we go further back to the cold war times the list grows longer. There was hope and effort to include Russia into the west after the fall of USSR but when Putin took over he immediately shut that down and made it clear that Russia will remain what it always has been, the great danger in the east.

The tanker Eagle S sabotage of submarine cables actually happened in international waters in the Finnish EEZ. When the Finnish Coast Guard patrol vessel pulled alongside the tanker in Chistmas day, it was still dragging the anchor chain. There was no option but intervene, to prevent further damage, even though the ship was in international waters. Luckily, the captain of Tanker Eagle S followed the orders to lift the anchor chain, exit the traffic separation lane and anchor in Finnish territorial waters. The ship was boarded by Finnish law enforcement authorities while it was anchored in Finnish territorial waters. So far, Finnish authorities have found an anchor dragging path in the seabed that matches the route of the ship and extends over 100 km (55 nm), across the damaged cables. The anchor itself was also found, and later retrieved by a Swedish submarine rescue vessel. It was caught in a submarine pipeline near the poínt where the ship was stopped. There are too many dark tankers in the world. To have proper functioning sanctions, western governmnts should sanction those oil terminals that buy Russian oil, and make sure the Russian oil is not processed and sold as "non-russian" products. For example, Russians own large oil terminals and refineries in India. Russian oil is transported to India, it is processed in those refineries and the products are sold also in western countries.
@formes238814 күн бұрын
The big buyers of sanctioned products are going to be the likes of China. The US right now can't afford direct sanctions do to likely retaliation; and other actors are in a similar enough state. However - it's also worth realizing if you take the product off the market 100% - you end up with a MASSIVE price spike globally as demand immediately out strips production. And if that happens - Western nations are going to have MASSIVE political upheaval. The result of the sanctions- is, Russia is forced to sell at a massive discount. 3ed party producers and those with refinery capabilities are buying it at a discount, producing it, and selling it onwards. So Russia's oil and gas are on the market, but: Russia is benefiting less from it - and, in the long term, it's limiting the use of Russia's refineries creating all kinds of long term viability problems for Gazprom. The real issue right now - is how do you stop the flow of dual use products, being used to build weapon systems in Russia? Sure the cost is way up per unit - but, it's still flowing.

Arguments against seizing 300 billion USD from Russia and giving them to Ukraine are just artificial and weak. Trust within the world financial system would not be harmed, as this step would just show there is justice and no one can attack its neighbors and destroy its cities, killing citizens. If this punishment would be internationally agreed and processed legislatively, there is not chance for Russia to question it later on. Also it would help to avoid similar aggressions in the future as other potential offenders would think twice before they would attack.

I disagree with the guests comments about not using the frozen funds. After all it's just his opinion and not really his are of expertise. Others with more knowledge about the legalities and ramifications have explained why his reasoning is flawed. Let me say that speaking to Bill Browder on the subject is a better idea. In his book he lays out clearly the corruption and mafia style manner in which this money was obtained. At a more basic level putin has utilised Western banking systems and the corruptible nature of humans to build up funds with which to harm Western democracies. Take the money now.
@danspike622914 күн бұрын
I disagree with your assessment. Sanctions have no legal grounds based on the principle of laws but I fully understand your emotional justification. The challenge lies in the fact that there is no independent control on the issued sanctions. You assume that everybody listed is somehow guilty of war crimes but I can assure you that especially the US is using sanctions as a geopolitical weapon. Example: A friend of mine, bearing the same name as a Russian MP, but he is not Russian nor has he ever been there. Nevertheless, due to his name, all compliance systems go nuts on him and he struggles to prove his innocence. Why? Because the banks are so dam afraid of being in violation, that is is less risky to block a simple guy's account than to potentially have an issue with the US. Ever dealt with a Compliance department of a bank? They take weeks or months. Till then, no access to your account nor will your salary hit the account. From one day to the next you depend on your family and friends because you bear the same name as some Russian person. I would therefore be cautious with taking sanctions money as there will be people loosing their money without having anything to do with the war,. Go after the interest, that you can justify. Of course, you can argue that it is war times and these are collateral damages on the way. I just wanted to point out that, especially in this unprecedented landscape of sanctions, it is, unfortunately not just black and white.
@formes238814 күн бұрын
@@danspike6229 It's not fair, it's not fun, but welcome to a reality of what we have. The banking system is antiquated - there are far better ways of managing it, but the cost of re-doing everything is... high: So, there is no incentive. The end result is what we see. To put it bluntly: There are ways to avoid the problem - but, why would the banks care? I mean - really. Could Banks wish for a proof of citizenship as apart of opening the account? Sure. Now you have Name + Nationality. You could further tack on something like an SSN/SIN number for unique identification - and, leverage Nationality + SIN/SSN or whatever identification number to differentiate. Now there is no problem with the US or any other govenrment for that matter as you can difinitively say that Person X is not associated with account X, as account X is owned by person Y who shares a name but nothing else with X. The only way a change is going to happen is if there is such backlash to problems caused that... regulations force the matter. And it CAN be done. But banks are old, and slow, and ever more increasingly focused on today's profits - instead of the customer experience.

There has to be enough chain on the ground and the ship has to maneuver right to set the anchor (make it dig in) so just dropping only the anchor to the ground and moving the ship it becomes a hook dragging on the floor. That has to be done deliberate, the chance that an anchor drops and just enough chain runs out that happens to be about the depth of the sea at that place is practical zero.

After the Society Union collapsed, many were hopeful that Russia could be draw into the international community as a cooperative, non-adversarial nation. Although I think it was clear early on that Russia would still be deeply corrupt and relations would still be frosty, it wasn't until more recently that it was clear just how adversarial and aggressive Russia was going to be towards the West. This is largely been the result of Putin's ego and grand ambition to restore Russia to it's for.er glory.

IDK how you can say it backfires? It doesn't take much forward thought to know that this would be the reaction from the Baltic nations and/or NATO. I think what you have to consider is that Putin probably knew this would be the response and it probably already has the follow up step in motion. We need to anticipate better and stop being one step behind.

The Eagle S dragged the anchor for 60 nautical miles. The anchor’s flukes broke off. It’s not possible that the crew was unaware that the anchor was being dragged for hours. It would affect the performance and handling of the ship. This is very solid evidence that the act was intentional sabotage.

Stakes need to be raised, and bad actors need to know there will be consequences. If a ship is caught, it will either be boarded and impounded, or, if it runs away, it will be sunk. These are acts of piracy, we have to recognise these people are at war with us…so international law should allow for this to take place in territorial waters, EZ waters AND international waters.
@peabase14 күн бұрын
It _is_ piracy according to UNCLOS, but the difficulty is proving it. If pirates attack shipping off the Horn of Africa, there will be distress calls and all manner of direct evidence, but sabotage to undersea infrastructure it's much harder to prove. Territorial waters are covered, but in international waters -- including EEZs -- detaining a foreign ship is like making a citizen's arrest. Get it wrong and you'll find yourself in court facing charges of unlawful restraint.

Everything hangs on all parties agreeing to the rules. We all know that at times rules are bent and skewed and the refs often look the other way or are bought. But when ine side has completely thrown out the rules that they previously agreed to and all who are charged with enforcing those rules are scared, then the victory goes to the side who lied and cheated and is unethical. Worse than that they turn those rules back on us and some of us believe that's the right thing to do. How can it be right when the end result is anarchy? Right now we are seeing the result of our response. Is it successful or is it making it worse?

@Frithonor14 күн бұрын
Only when it's trying to sabotage undersea cables.
@tealkerberus74814 күн бұрын
No. It could theoretically happen in a really extreme typhoon - when both anchors and the engines at full power aren't enough all together to maintain position against the wind. But they don't get typhoons in the Baltic, so. This is absolutely not normal behaviour for a ship that isn't controlled by an enemy of the country using the undersea assets.
