According to Korean media, those soldiers weren't even told where they were heading until they arrived at the National Assembly building. They were told that they were being sent for a North Korea-related mission. They probably didn't have some sort of "realization" during the mission--They just didn't expect this at all and didn't want to comply from the very beginning. And their commanding officer didn't give them live ammo and made them retreat as soon as the speaker said martial law was voted down. So it's likely not just these soldiers who didn't want to obey, but also higher-ups (brigade or battalion commanders). It was their way to obey and disobey the chain of command at the same time.

The South Korean media states that a small handful of military personnel aligned with Yoon. They simply didn't have enough manpower to take control of the entire military. The chain of command wasn't unified, and that created confusion among the military regarding their objective. Some soldiers were told that the situation in North Korea was in dire state, so they were sent to protect the National Assembly building from North Korean sabotage. This martial law is poorly coordinated and probably made by Yoon's bizarre and spontaneous impulse.

South Korea's top general on Wednesday ordered the military to maintain firm readiness posture against potential North Korean threats after the National Assembly voted to reject President Yoon Suk Yeol's declaration of martial law. In South Korea, it is business as usual. The fate of 12 of the 13 Korean President's has been to be overthrown or killed. Yes, 12 of 13. So, what we are watching is actually the norm since the end of WW2. Here is the list: 1. Rhee Syngman (1948-1960) - overthrown. 2. Yun Bo-sung (1960-1962) - overthrown. 3. Park Chung Hee (1962-1979) - killed. 4. Choi Kyu Ha (1979-1980) - removed through a military coup. 5. Chun Doo-hwan (1981-1988) - sentenced to death after his presidential term. 6. Roh Tae-woo (1988-1993) - after his presidential term, he was sentenced to 22 years in prison. 7. Kim Young Sam (1993-1998) - served in prison under President No. 3. After becoming president himself, he secured the conviction of his two predecessors. 8. Kim Dae-jung (1998-2003) - was imprisoned under President No. 3, sentenced to death under President No. 5. Pardoned. Nobel Peace Prize laureate. 9. Roh Moo-hyun (2003-2008) - impeached (overturned by the Constitutional Court). After resignation, was investigated for corruption. Committed suicide. 10. Lee Myung-bak (2008-2013) - after his presidential term, he was arrested on charges of corruption. 11. Park Geun-hye (2013-2016) - impeached. Arrested on corruption charges. Received 24 years in prison. 12. Moon Jae-in (2017-2022) - the only lucky one. 13. The current President Yoon Seok-yeol has been in power since 2022. He seems more likely to have a fate similar to the 12, rather than to the last one."

The military personnel also swears to follow all LEGAL orders (this term is explicity used) of the Commander in Chief and those he delegates to. The US military is the first to swear allegience to a body of laws, rather something else. I am curious as to whether South Korean troops have something similar.
