I'd say things can go badly enough in Moscow, not on the battlefield, that the russians DO actually have to leave Ukraine. And that's the way it's currently trending. The vertical of power is strong, but brittle. NATO has the ability outlast putin, it will just come down to the will to do so.

Each month recently, I see Ukraine develop new techniques, and the latest round of attacks on Russian ammunition depots is another example of Ukraine saying we need to keep going no matter what our allies do. They are slowly making progress in so many ways. Having said that they really do need the help and and support of their allies, but at least they are not sitting navel staring, and waiting for the Russians to roll them over.

One key goal of any acceptable solution has to be that Russia is deterred from trying again in the near future. One sure way would be for Ukraine to join NATO and for Western troops to be stationed in Ukraine. How to get there is the question. Russia giving up and withdrawing from all of Ukraine would be one way. Short of that, I don’t think NATO would want to station troops in Ukraine without some sort of deal between Ukraine and Russia.

Yes, Russia needs peace to re-stock, re-supply, re-train, re-plan, won't make the same mistakes twice, all the while continuing to send Ukrainians and Tatars to their death or Siberia while moving more Russians in, then subversively taking back control of Ukraine's economy and government, which will vote against any EU or NATO membership. Any compromise will result in the end of Ukraine, with European Union, security and stablility eventually with it, back to the 1980s USSR and Eastern Bloc, with oppressed population within and the Cold War. Russia can easily have peace, agree to the plan for peace that Zelensky outlined. And no punishment for the horrendous crimes that Russia committed against Ukraine? Really, was also committed against the world. Only encourages the likes of China, North Korea, Iran, Hamas, Syria, ISIS, Al Quida and any oppressive nation if nothing is done.

It in inevitable that Puitn will lose this war. Many commentators don't understand why. It's a simple numbers game - resources. Putin's economy was half that of the UK when he started this war - it's even worse now - he is going to run out of money to buy weapons and pay for his army. It' doesn't take a monetary economist to realise that it's not a good thing when your economy is based upon energy exports and your largest customer walks away. It's not a good thing when your central bank raises interest rates to 19%, 4 times that of the UK. We are witnessing the fall of a dictator - it really is that simple.

@@paulpaisley5291 The size of the cake and how it is apportioned are different things. Last winter, most likely again this winter, several Russian cities went without heating and water, due to lack of investment in maintaining infrastructure. I doubt the same will be the case in the UK. Assisting UK pensioners and to what degree is a political decision. Many UK pensioners do have a starting point of being very much better off than Russian pensioners, I suspect much more than double Russian pensioners' income,. where you draw the line on winter fuel allowances is a political decision. Those with private or work pensions on top of state pensions can in retirement be getting two or three times another persons working salary, those not at this extreme would benefit from some state help since fuel prices have risen so much in recent years. You cannot compare GDP comparisons and political decisions about how government wealth is spent on a simple ratio comparison.

I believe Ukraine can attain a victory that includes regaining all their land, but it means a commitment by us in the West to maintain the support indefinitely and to resist the urge to accept a conditional ceasefire. Putin has to know that he cannot wait the West out and there is not breathing room to rebuild. His economy is failing, and time is not on his side. That's how the victory that requires him to pull his military out entirely will come.

Russia will win if the West stops supporting Ukraine. And Ukraine can win if the West continues its support, and it will win sooner if they increase their support. Russia was forced to withdraw from Afghanistan after significantly less losses, they knew they could not win. It’s almost as if we want there to be a frozen war with one fifth of Ukraine occupied by Russia. And a comprehensive win for Ukraine comes with a Brucie bonus. Refugees will be able to return to their homes, and no longer have to seek refuge in Europe.

Mark talks about the different countries of the west seeing different threats as being more relevant to them; surely, the point point about the world today is that all these threats are actually each just part of the same growing problem, and we should be treating them as such and dealing with them using a holistic approach rather than trying to tackle them individually. The piecemeal approach is 'short termism' at its most dangerous and only ensures that the issues will fester and grow until the whole thing gets out of hand and out of control, just as with the second world war. The various governments throughout the western world think they are so clever in persuing each their own approach whilst trying to influence the others into their way of things. In reality they are all stuck up their own arses and really have no idea what they are doing.

The word appeasement’ is not popular, but appeasement has its place in all policy,” as Churchill said in 1950. “Make sure you put it in the right place. Appease the weak, defy the strong.” He also argued that “appeasement from strength is magnanimous and noble and might be the surest and perhaps the only path to world peace.” We must make it clear to Russia that the only way this war can end is with their full withdrawal to their own pre 2014 borders.

I would somewhat disagree with Mr Galeotti on the topic of maintaining Western cohesion. While it's nice to have countries like Italy and Spain "on board" a Ukraine strategy, all these countries really need to do is not act like Hungary, e.g. not be Putin stooges. Which they're not, so that's good. The USA is what matters and to a lesser extent the UK, Poland & Scandinavian countries. America has something like 4-5 thousand Abrams tanks and 6-7 thousand Bradley IFVs, for example; many hundreds of which the US Army is never going to use & could be brought out of storage to be refurbished & sent to Ukraine. If America steps up its support for Ukraine with a much more definitive strategy, Europe will follow.

Regime change is the definition of the surest shortest way to a "win", if we are talking about restoring "peace", through the cessation of the active combat. This is because Putin, and his delusional ambitions, are the sole "casus belli" for this war. This war will end within 6 months of Putin's removal, no matter how much saber rattling his successor may do in the short run. This is simply because Russia has essentially already been defeated militarily, and Russia has been economically wrecked. '

I disagree with your closing statement that a 'balanced view of all the issues at play' has been discussed. There was no mention of the possibility of some form of popular uprising or coup that topples Putin - something that seems increasingly likely the more the war is taken to Russian soil.

Honestly I am no longer this sure about it being impossible for Ukraine to reclaim all of its territory. Within days, Ukraine devastated what amounts to be 2 months worth of russian ammunition. This will slow down. Other depots are harder to reach and so on. However, with Russia barely able to make but the tiniest of progress towards Pokrovsk using 100% of ammo, one might ask, what Russia can do with only 75% of its monthly supply. In case Ukraine was to overwhelm russian lines in one point, they than can quickly and efficiently - like they did in Kursk - take territory right up into Russia. In the end, Russia might be pleading to do peace-talks while Russia is still no smaller than it was in 2013... Putin might bring thousands of men over and over again, but without proper equipment and ammunition, these will be nothing but cannon-fodder, up until basic necessities of the russian economy are no longer covered.

Putin can never win this war, NATO won't let him. Putin thought that he got away when he used Chemical weapons "such as the Novichok nerve gas" on UK soil, the UK is a NATO country. Winning for Russia doesn’t have to mean taking the entire country. If the Russian economy is as large or larger than it started with, and they control Donbass, Luhansk, Zaporizhzhia, Kherson and Crimea, strategically, that’s as a win for Russia even if what’s left of Ukraine do end up joining NATO.
