Regardless of whether you're a staunch monarchist or not it's not remotely ok that protesters were arrested. Freedom of speech includes freedom to express dissapproval with the monarchy and the suggestion that it doesn't/shouldn't is not compatible with the core concept of the UK as a country.

I agree but what does it say about Charles (and our government of course, but at least we can vote them out, not that Starmer has done any better to be fair) that he hasn’t condemned the arrest of peaceful protesters at his coronation by officers who swore an oath to him? It is often claimed that the monarchy upholds our rights and freedoms but it doesn’t seem to be doing that at the moment and I can’t really think of an example where it has ever done that. I am quite envious of many continental European countries which not only have more parties to choose from than us but also get to elect an independent head of state (along with a parliament which then chooses a prime minister) to counteract and challenge the prime minister. And often these presidents are quite popular as symbols of unity and democracy in their countries.

Not everyone has such information readily available in their head. However, here are some of the ways he contributes to the UK. Please note, I am indifferent to this: 1. Royal duties: As the longest-serving Prince of Wales, King Charles has carried out a wide range of royal duties on behalf of the Queen. These include attending ceremonial events, visiting organizations and institutions, and representing the UK during official visits abroad. 2. Charitable work: King Charles is actively involved in numerous charitable organizations and initiatives. He founded The Prince's Trust in 1976, which has become one of the UK's leading youth charities, and he is the patron or president of over 400 other charities. Through his charitable work, he has helped improve the lives of countless individuals in the UK and beyond. 3. Environmental advocacy: King Charles has been a prominent advocate for environmental causes, championing issues such as climate change, sustainable agriculture, and conservation. He has used his position to raise awareness, support research, and promote sustainable practices across various sectors. 4. Cultural patronage: King Charles is a patron of numerous arts, culture, and heritage organizations in the UK. Through his patronage, he supports the preservation and promotion of British culture, history, and artistic endeavours. 5. Economic contributions: The Duchy of Cornwall, a private estate established in 1337, provides King Charles with an income for his personal and public expenses. The Duchy's assets are managed to provide financial benefits for the heir to the throne while also supporting rural communities, agriculture, and sustainable development. 6. Diplomatic role: King Charles has represented the UK in various diplomatic capacities throughout his life. He has attended state functions, met with foreign dignitaries, and undertaken official visits to strengthen relationships with other countries. His various roles and responsibilities as the Prince of Wales and now Kind, have had a significant impact on the UK in areas such as charity, environmental advocacy, cultural patronage, and diplomacy.

The fact that they always fall back on tourism and "bringing money into the country" is so telling if you think about it. What, that's all they do? Prince Andrew is an arrogant and not very nice man. Like Harry he always thought he would have a privileged life without having to work for it. His choice of friends and the choices he made were ill advised. However the lady who brought the allegations about him was 17 and in the UK old enough to make her own decisions. It took her over 20 years when she was married and living in Australia for her to bring charges just before the Queen's jubilee. Wouldn't make a dent. That divided up between 68 million of us is about 8 quid each a year. Cut corporation tax and make the UK a more welcoming country to companies wishing to invest, create more jobs and try to fix some of the damage with the EU by negotiating better post brexit trade deals. Then take the revenue from that via indirect taxation such as VAT and start investing it properly into a more generous welfare state.

The RF costs the UK around 90mil a year so their abolition would see the average Brit get a return of less than 2 quid a year and that is based on the assumption that the Royals bring nothing at all in to the country. This idea that every Brit in the country would suddenly be vastly better off as a result of getting rid of the Royals is just reasoning, and as you said this is before you then take into account the cost's involved in operating a Republic. So on the one hand you have an institution that is part and parcel of British Heritage that in the worst case scenario cost everyone £2 a head and in the best case scenario brings people in to the country and makes money for the country. On the other you have a Republic that has no link to British heritage will cost the average person an as yet unspecified amount to maintain and given that there is no link whatsoever to Britain and its history how many people do you think are going to come here to take a look at some of our Republics 'historical' locations?

If people were told the truth around Monarchy they will be probably against it. It is mainly privileged people who act to keep it. It has advantages but not because it is fueling tourism but because it represents part of a political power.
@JosephCapelli

See what I don't understand is why everyone mentions tourism but doesn't mention how the Crown Estate hands over a majority of its revenue to the Treasury for public spending, with only a portion being returned in the Sovereign Grant, which probably paid for the Coronation several times over. Almost as if republican activists aren't as informed as they like to think they are... monarchy has benefits and that's why we've kept it this long.

I am not privileged. I skateboard for a hobby and work 16 hours a day learning mathematics, computational biology and various other STEM subjects. Please note that I am indifferent to the monarchy but am happy to support it with my 1.60 per year given that it remains an relatively integral part of the nation's cultural and political identity. Here are some key functions of the British monarchy: 1. Constitutional role: The British monarchy is a constitutional monarchy, which means that the monarch's powers are limited by law and exercised primarily through elected representatives in Parliament. The King's role in government is largely ceremonial, and her primary function is to provide continuity and stability to the nation's political system. 2. Head of State: The monarch serves as the head of state, representing the nation in its unity, continuity, and stability. The King will fulfill various ceremonial duties, such as the State Opening of Parliament, attending national commemorations, and hosting state visits. 3. Diplomatic representation: The King and other members of the royal family often represent the UK in diplomatic capacities. They attend state functions, host foreign dignitaries, and undertake official visits abroad to strengthen relationships with other countries. 4. Patronage and charitable work: Members of the royal family are actively involved in numerous charitable organizations and initiatives. They serve as patrons for various causes, raise awareness, and help generate funds for charities. Through their patronage, they support the work of thousands of organizations across the UK and globally. 5. Promotion of national identity and heritage: The British monarchy is a symbol of national identity, history, and tradition. The royal family plays a significant role in preserving and promoting British culture, heritage, and the arts, both within the UK and internationally. Not that I care too much. 6. Tourism and economy: The British monarchy is a significant tourist attraction, drawing millions of visitors to the UK each year. Tourists visit royal palaces, castles, and other attractions, contributing to the country's economy through increased spending on accommodations, dining, and related activities.

I think it’s a blessing that people protest in the UK as there are plenty of countries around the world, most of which have Presidents, where people are denied freedom of speech and are killed for dissent. I don’t think that Republic have set out a case for a President in the UK & none of the political parties support it. Their website states that they want to abolish the Royal Family. Will there be a referendum on this issue? If not, it’s not exactly democratic, is it? Who will choose the candidates for President or can anyone have a go? Is there a term for the President? What if a President decrees a lifetime presidency for themselves & their heirs? Industry figures for 2020/2021 show that the UK’s tourist industry is currently worth £106 billion & supports 2.6m jobs & peaks when there is a Royal event. How will this revenue shortfall be made up if there’s a President? Every year, The Prince’s Trust helps 60,000 young people aged 18-30 who are unemployed, struggling at school or face exclusion by moving them into employment, training, education, volunteering thus turning their lives around. Who will make up this money? They raise a lot of money for charities & draw media attention to global issues in a similar way. The Royal Family promotes British products & services abroad keeping the British economy in millions of jobs & their network connections and influence are a sign of the UK’s trustworthiness as a state globally. All gone if there’s a President, particularly a corrupt one. I agree that the monarchy should be slimmed down & those who do nothing or bring the Royal Family into disrepute should be sacked. They should publish results every year to show if key objectives have been met. The media scrutiny will keep it in check for now.

Sadly, when the British monarchy gets abolished, the British Empire will ultimately die. The British Empire is barely hanging onto his health after the World Wars and decolonization and given the fact that Queen Elizabeth II didn't do anything to save the British Empire. The British monarchy is the only source that keeps the British Empire from dying. After the monarchy gets abolished, Scotland will instantly gain its independence, and quite possibly Wales. Northern Ireland will be united with Ireland. Furthermore, each of the British Overseas Territories will claim their independences one by one or become terra nullis depending on indigenous population, and the Commonwealth Realms will become republics. After that, the new Republic of England will barely have any power compared to other countries, will lose quite a bit of population, and it can spark a wave of communism in Europe, as the UK is one of the key countries that support capitalism, along with Germany, France, Italy, and other strong EU states. With such a great reduction of power, England would no longer keep its legacy of not being invaded for long, as eventually, it could collapse into smaller states with even less power. The saddest part is that the British Empire would never get a chance to unite with Brittany, so Great Britain would never have a chance to unite with Little Britain before its death by monarchy abolition. Therefore, King Charles will be the last head-of-state of the British Empire if the monarchy gets abolished before he dies, and the new president will only rule over England, a non-imperial country that could eventually be invaded for the first time in history.
