Lovely low-rpm genset, you've done a good job of that! Funny to see a Lister in the US, I'm surprised they ever ended up over there. That'll run forever and ever if you keep up the maintenance and service schedule.

I built a real simple automatic/manual shutoff for mine. Using a power door lock solonoid(available at any wrecker). It is temperature activated or I have a push button by the door to the gen shed. The kids can shut off the Lister without going near it. Very nice project you have there!

We should change the regulations to allow the importation of low power, 30 Hp max, Diesel engines and complete gen sets. If I lived where I would like to instead of where I can afford I would have at least one of these running 24/7 to provide electricity and heat. This is a dream given my situation.

Just found this video, watched your other one with larger Lister, great job! I still can't see how they can use JP as fuel, yep- you told me that awhile ago. Only thing I would change! Replace those tires with solid type, no tubes, no flats...
@PeterLawton
@PeterLawton 4 жыл бұрын
I like the tires. They absorb vibration, and there is a lot to absorb. Considering how little distance this travels, flats seem unlikely to rare, and my new favorite product, Slime, can prevent them, too.

VERY NICELY DONE! However, you have a big 3000kw starter already integrated into the system, I'm curious why you went through all the trouble of having a seperate starter? A gen head should work fine as a motor to start the engine too...
@able880
@able880 3 жыл бұрын
You would have to have a different type of generator head with a built-in starter set of windings and contactors - starter motor generators work well on gasoline engines but don't work too well on diesel engines because of the compression the generator would have to be two to three times larger if it were a starter and generator on a diesel engine plus you would have to have an 8D battery to start that particular engine on compression

@mechanicalbu11 - FINALLY...someone who knows what they're talking about! All to often I've seen comments on other Lister videos not being imported because of "global warming" issues or because people think our own gov. doesn't want its citizens to be 'self-efficient'...nice to know someone knows what's up!

have you thought about using a temp switch to regulate coolant temp? That way it powers on the fan when the temp hits a point and then powers it off at another point, all automatically.
@medabrundibar
@medabrundibar 13 жыл бұрын
What about controlling the fan speed directly by the coolant temperature? It would be more reliable (pots tend to fail very soon), foolproof and easier for the engine (it would warm up quicker, as the fan would be OFF till it reach minimum operating temperature, without the risk of overheating)...

@mechanicalbu11 Nothing to do with global warming. In fact diesel engine efficiency, means they emit less CO2 for the same power. It's NOx (oxides of nitrogen) and particulates like soot and sulfates. Standards it likely could or does meet, (it's no boosted to hell turbo diesel that needs EGR at idle/lean cruise) but since its not certified to current emissions its not allowed.

I'll mention some details for him he had passed away but I had some long conversations with him when he was alive when he was setting it up - I worked in the oilfield for a long while and am familiar with stationary engines - he did have the fly wheels on his balanced - the starter is a kit sold for those engines - the engine uses thermal syphoning to move water the radiator is an top to bottom core from what I can remember or vertical, in our discussions - he ran it on JP 4 - 50:1 2cycle oil mix - the continue out put at 700 or so RPMs would be roughly 7 hp or 2500 watts continues & the kva would be about 10 kva or slightly less - fuel consumption on #2 diesel is 300 ml or 1 qt per kw out put hour - on JP it's slightly higher - fan thermostat was 180f cut in 170 cut out -at 700rpm he could expect at least 40-50000 hrs of run time till rod bearing and ring change out along w valves ECT - those engines are in use thru out Europe as CHP units one in Poland has been in service sence 1946 - there also used in remote places thru out the world

@@ZZ-jd6vx I found out from some one else who contacted me - some one gave him my number to contact me about things when it came to generating power - sence he was a pilot & I'm a senior oil field systems engineer - it gave us common ground he would call me from airports at time at any hour - in the oilfield as a tecnical person half your time is spent in flight and the other half is spent on the ground - so that alone gave us things to talk about - we talked about the difficulty he had when he added the electric start kit to that engine - many of the older single cylinder listers stationary engines were manual start most of those are from the 30s & 40s in some areas we up grated them to cranks with counter balancers & new style fly wheels with starter gear rings - ( most are Arrows or Ajax today) there many listers that still keep voltage on pipe lines it triples the life of pipe lines - so they could be started remotely and shut down remotly we up grated them - many were the original listers the Indian version is the same - except the the ones used in the oil fields the heads are fitted with oilers & there is a 10-50 gallon oil sump added so it can run 5 -8 yrs unattended when there stand alone - thanks for responding

@@ZZ-jd6vx many of the combustion turbins in the oilfields are GE engines that were original 747 engines bought off retired planes - Bob found that to be interesting -gas compressor stations, liquid fuel lift stations and plants through out the country use them for power & recover the heat - in cold regions they use retired chopper engine for power and heat - Bob found that to be interesting - a majority of the tugs, supply boats and drilling rigs are fitted with EMDs that were on retired locomotives - u can get surplus for 5 cents on the dollar - the draw works & mud pumps on offshore rigs are often fitted with truck motors off locomotives - Bob found all that to be awesome - it opened up a new world of knowledge to him when he found out many things are reperposed after air craft & locomotives are retired

@LtColDaddy71 The Main generator makes AC current, without special windings built in it will not spin with DC connected to it, therefore no go as a starter. Even connecting AC to the terminals will not make them spin, I accidentally did this on a 300 kW V12 Detroit Diesel once, a big bang, blown diodes in the alternator, and a damaged regulator, but no spin. bummer.

It will build excessive carbon in the head and exhaust port when you go to start it because the exhaust Port has carbon build up it also builds up on the exhaust seat when you try to start it you won't get the compression needed for the start and run so you trying to keep the water at least at 180 so you don't have any carbon buildup in the exhaust port or head

@bigmacboy876
@bigmacboy876 7 жыл бұрын
yeah but at a miniature scale its practical. Why not run off of the stator behind the fly wheel from a motorcycle engine or moped your powering basic DC appliances headlight,tail light, horn indicators right? You don't need to build an external generator and retro fit it to a bike. work smarter not harder.
@jaimemarino3857

Greetings. Can you calculate a homemade generator that can power a DC or AC motor of a converted electric vehicle? I suppose the Lister engine is not suitable because it requires a motor with speed acceleration. This in order to avoid the use of batteries, I believe these will be expensive in the future, and I do not think their waste is very ecological.

How long does it run 1/2 load on a full tank?
@able880
@able880 3 жыл бұрын
Its a 3 gallon tank - that engine Burns. - 1 quart of fuel an hour per 1000 watt load. Or it takes 1 Qt of fuel oil per kw hour out put - - if you run the engine as a 6 horsepower that would be at 650 RPMs you will get a little bit better fuel efficiency if you run the engine as an 8 horsepower at 850 RPMs you will either burn 300 ml or one quart of fuel per hour per kilowatt output and the load on the engine per kilowatt is 2.5 horsepower - that would be roughly 33000-btu input or fuel- that will give you 2.5 horsepower out the shaft of the engine in that case the input of the generator would be 2.5 horsepower which will deliver one kilowatt of electrical power- I'm very familiar with that engine
