But wrenching anticipation there Paul, another example of the skill and patience you have in abundance to logically work through each part of the process to eliminate the problem areas. Fascinating to watch, and I for one will put money on a successful outcome. On top of all this you manage to produce this excellent coverage of the whole event.....I bow to your superior talents...Bob

@eatmypies Im still trying to grasp exactly whats happening. On the bottom end inside the crankcase, the Pushrods sit inside a half cup type thing, these cups follow the cam pushing up the rods. At the top end, the rod is dished if I remember rightly, and this fits like a ball and socket joint onto the rocker arm. Providing the tappets are set correctly, approx 10 thou inch, no way should they come out. Tie wire around the push roads and lower down inside the crankcase to position them :-)

@jannercornwall Oddly enough this whole job began with a Petrol leak, the Paint bubbled up, resulting in me scraping it off, which lead on to me stripping it down and doing what I did here. Im glad I did, like you say, do it once and do it proper, unlike the engines last owner who just slapped paint over everything slap dash like, restored he said! my arse! - Least I can look at this now and know in my heart that Im happy with it.... Thanks for the feedback. Paul :-)

Have you got good earth between the mag and the mounting plate? There should be shiney metal but it does seem like the mag! You could also try taking the mag off and spinning it with a drill to help revive it? Cracking restoration though!!
@Bevoin1970
@Bevoin1970 13 жыл бұрын
@cornishadz Yes good earth all over the place, even bolts beneath holding mag in place. Whats this about spinning in a drill all about? Never heard of doing that before. Thanks for the comments, Im chuffed with the results too. Got a new spark plug to bang in and try again the weekend when I have more time.

Maybe its the timing Paul. Im no expert but wonder if there is a worn or wrong sized slot key in the shaft the flywheel is attached to.

@Jobergg Everything seems as it should no obvious problems that I can see, today very briefly she ran normally as it should, I was overjoyed, but it didn't last long, so I know it has to be something very silly, but annoying. Its a trial and error process now, ticking things off as I go. I shall sort it out, and will make another video of it running properly. The story isn't over just yet!! :-)) Thanks for the advice.

Ok, how long have you had it running for, if it starts to struggle and then stops after about an hour that is classic coil failure, especialy if it won't start easily right away. Also, how soon are you switching over to paraffin? I recon it would be worth just running petrol for a bit.

No its not milk, its coolant as used in engineering machines such as Lathes, Milling machines and so on. You can buy it from off ebay, looks brown and oil like, then you pour a small amount into a bucket, and simply add water, it instantly turns milk coloured. Prevents rusting and is a lubricant too. Called "slurry" or "suds oil"

@mrstuart143 Funnily today I can get it to fire just by spinning the flywheel by hand, but my fault means it wont stay running for very long. Im convinced its in the HT, Plug side of things. Very briefly it did run perfectly and as it should, no idea what I did, or what had changed to make that happen, but I haven't been able to replicate it since. Cracks in the points cover don't help matters neither. I know my timing is right too, hence the hand start by flywheel. Thanks for the advice

@steamwally During the time it ran perfectly for around 30 seconds, but then ran out of Petrol, as Im only using the small tank, not even tried it on Paraffin just yet, not until its running properly on Petrol at least. Hopefully the weekend when I have more time, I have a new Spark Plug to try in, so fingers crossed Im expecting better results. If that fails to make her run properly, then I really do think my Magneto or associated things need looking into. Exhaust hasn't got hot yet! - Thanks

Over here in England, Lister D are one of the most common engines that come up for sale, just keep looking on ebay, you dont have to wait for long before you see one come up for sale, well thats the UK market. They are very easy to work on, and just keep going no matter what. Easy to store too come to that. Thanks for watching. :)
@steamwally

The engine should run for at least 1/2 an hour if that little starting tank is full, I wonder if your timing is wrong at 20 degrees BTDC, a friend of mine swears by setting all his engines to 10.

@jannercornwall You know at the time, I wasn't aware of any of that, which is odd for me because Im an ex-toolmaker, so Im used to machinery and revolving parts etc. It was only when I watched the film back I saw what you saw, I gave myself a rollicking, trust me. I was frustrated by the engine not working 100per cent, I think. My problem was the condenser, soon as that was sorted out, everything ran fine after that. Im quite pleased with myself over this engine, it was tough going at times. THX

@007vauxhall Me too, and now the bugger is being a bad boy. One of those silly faults that is very annoying to trace, but eventually It will be found one way or another and sorted out. I shall make another film of the engine running as it should soon as I get it sorted out, hopefully I will get it mobile too with some wheels, so I can move it around and on more solid ground. Thanks, but it aint over till the fat lady sings as they say... :-))

@multivan2001 I see you like my work bench, flexible like trees in the wind.... ha ha Until I get the fine tuning sorted out, it makes for easy work whilst the engine is at a nice height to work on. Once Im happy with the running, then I shall take it off the bench and onto the floor. I have more room outside on the bench than I do in my shed. Thanks for the nice comments Nils, I shall continue to fix this little fault eventually, and post another video of it working properly. Hello Kiel :-)

@ThePixelpoke You know your damn right there, whilst Im sat driving I dare say I shall have one of those "Light Bulb" moments when the Penny drops. Its only something silly, for a very brief moment today, not caught on camera, she ran at normal speed like she should, so I know Im not far away from sorting it out. thats why I suspect something on the spark / Magneto side of things. Thanks Matt
@Bevoin1970

@steamwally I have had moments of it running apparently ok after changing the Spark Plug, it could well be something on the magneto side of things, more investigation is needed. My timing is set to 20 degrees BTDC 10 degrees is for slower running so it seems. Tappets are around 15 thou, points 10 thou and everything checks ok. Only items I cant check without a direct swap are the condenser and the HT coil.

@birdman404 I've calmed down since I began cranking this over, and discovered I can get it to start firing up just by spinning the flywheel by hand, so just goes to show you don't need to whiz it over at 100 mph. Only trouble is its not running properly just yet. Phew I was well knackered last Saturday after yanking my arms out cranking this... ha ha

@steamwally 20 Degrees is the correct factory setting according to the Lister book, 10 degrees is used by those on the rally scene who want their engines to run slower, either way my engine should run at least on either of those two settings, 10 or 20 degrees is just fine tuning in my book.

@terence20001 I have spent hours over this during this weekend, I have set the points and the timing umpteen times, just to double check as you do. In one brief moment, she ran at speed and all normal like, then it ran out of Petrol. I couldn't replicate that result again. I will try another spark plug next, then begin looking at the Magneto. I know its only something silly somewhere, just a matter of finding it... Yes your right I wouldn't have anything to do if it ran perfect. Thanks Terence

In the beginning, it was just the engine casting, easy to lift on and work at a comfortable height, then I added other bits and pieces as you do in the rebuild. I used to just throw a cover over it at night, thus leaving in situ. It finally took two of us to lift it down onto the floor. Yes they are indeed hefty lumps of iron...lol :-)

@mrstuart143 I can spin the flywheel by hand and get it to begin firing up in a fashion, obviously its not running properly just yet, but proves the timing is set ok without any kicking back. It also proves that you need to crank it over at 100 mph like I was doing earlier on.

@hanomagman Yes I too think I may have either an intermittent spark at the Plug. I know for sure I have a cracked Points cover, seen two cracks, so maybe I have a short to earth there? without swapping it over for another Magneto its hard to say 100% Very briefly, and all of a sudden it ran perfectly, then ran out of fuel... Grrr :-)) I know it will be a very silly fault when I find it. I shall try a new spark plug next as my cheapest option, then consider the magneto after that. Thanks :-))

Thank you for your comment, I purposely left in the fact that it didn't work straight away, and needed some fine tuning to get her to fire up. Thats what its all about in my opinion. No idea about running on wood-gas? this is a petrol / Paraffin style engine. Runs best on Petrol, but it works fine on TVO fuel or Kerosene so long as its working hard! otherwise it runs a little lumpy. :-)

LOL I know its just a silly fault, just a case of finding it. @MakeDoAndMend1 I've tried holding down the float, no change, I can get it flooded just by opening the mixture dial more turns, the plug gets wet so I know its getting fuel. The position its in now seems just right regarding fuel / air setting. Very briefly after I made this film, and for some unknown reason it ran perfectly today, at speed too, so I know its an intermittent kind of fault, saying that I haven't been able to replicate it since. Thanks for the comments and advice, much appreciated

I was having similar issues with it firing, I cleaned contact areas in the Mag, I put the points open gap to 8thou, I then adjust the float on the pin so it's slightly above the notch (not clicked in) this raised the fuel level to help the engine pull it in, and if you have the 2 lines on your fuel mix, open it up anticlockwise to almost 1 whole turn so the line sits level with the sprung pin, mine won't start unless it's here and the lowest I can turn it is about 45 degrees clockwise from that start position, it struggles and stops if lower, best way to test is try pulling speed control up, if it dosent speed up quickly then mix is too lean.

Tony Ling I used to use engineers Coolant, "Slurry" same stuff you get in Lathes, Milling machines etc. Its a soluble oil mixed with water and turns milky. Because its oily natured, the cast iron won't rust up quite the same as just plain old water. Hope this helps.

Whats the white liquid your putting in the hopper ?
@Bevoin1970
@Bevoin1970 7 жыл бұрын
It was engineers coolant "Slurry" Its a water based oil used in keeping cutting tools cool on Milling machines, Lathes etc. It stopped my water hopper rusting back up due to the oily nature of the liquid.

If I ever have the chance of owning one of these beauties, I would... and seeing this video probably buy heavy duty saw horses to compensate for the vibration. Its a little bigger than I thought, meh... I wanted something like this as opposed to the briggs pull start on my leaf blower
