Thanks. The key to getting them quiet is down to attention to detail when rebuilding and modifying it. Any slack = noise, and you can take up slack on Tapets with light springs so that you still have the correct clearances but no actual sloppiness. same with the chain. I used shims to get it perfect. Even down to a few thousands of an inch. Removing resonant frequencies from the Chain guard helps to.

Well I'm glad you lot like it. Sadly this set up has been dismantled as I have moved. I will probably use the Lister in my pumping shed as I now have a stream. It may also get used for off grid lighting for the out buildings too. Just for you info the flywheel has been balanced to insure smooth running. A few other small acoustic engineering mods have been carried out too:-) And yes starting was done by an electric drill on the alternator nut. Well done to "lordmcted" for working that out. There is no prize for you though:-)

@@EngineEngineer I've got a Lister F that runs as smooth as silk. You couldn't balance a tanner on it, but maybe a 2-bob bit :-)
@nathanamosengineering18365 жыл бұрын
@@EngineEngineer The flywheel has added weight to compensate for the poor mass production balancing from the factory. The engine has been balanced to run smooth all the way up to well above the normal speed these are designed to run at. Single cylinder engines like this with Heavy cast iron connecting rods and pistons often have frequencies and resonances that show up the moment you go above designed speed and can violently jump around. These issues show up even at the designed speed but this was considered normal / acceptable. Correct timing and carburettor setup also helps with the smoothness of these engines.
@nathanamosengineering18365 жыл бұрын
@@nlo114 Doesn't the F have the benefit of an aluminium piston? If so that would help by reducing the reciprocating mass thus helping it to run smoother at the higher designed speed.

I think that's a great video and I'm amazed at how quiet you've got it to run. The only question I have is the heat generated under full load. Can that copper pipe arrangement displace that heat easily enough? There must be a couple of kW water jacket heat? I might make something similar for mine, a tank-cooled one... Cheers!
@nathanamosengineering18367 жыл бұрын
Alec Wood thanks for your question. The copper pipe radiator was not sufficient for this engine under full load. It did ok on light load of 60 watts but much more and it would boil over.

@nathanamosengineering18364 жыл бұрын
Glad you like it. Applying acoustic engineering principles helped me quieten it down lots whilst easy starting is achieved by having an excellent magneto and fuel mixture set up. So many people put up with poor running and starting engines with week magnetos and knackered engines. The home made radiator was not quite big enough do dissipate all the heat sadly whilst mounted in the shed. Cats, dogs, children and engines should never be mixed as it can make a bloody mess :-D.

I really liked the video and I gave it a thumbs up. Let me ask a dumb question here but what are the brass pipes on the wall for?
@nathanamosengineering18365 жыл бұрын
No problem asking that question. The pipes on the wall are copper and its a basic radiator to dissipate heat from the engine. However it wasn't really big enough.

At the bottom of the pipe is a tee with a drain hole to drain out any water or condensate. At the back of the shed was a silencer with a capacity of 25 liters also with a drain hole. I'm far from a short sighted, stupid or an idiot. I design and engineer things carefully and think of all possible issues before starting. The exhaust on this is almost totally condensing due to the large capacity hence ample drainage. It was done to avoid having to have a flap as they make noise of their own don't they. Thanks for your assumption and concerns though lol. I say this in the nicest possible way..... Best not make assumptions. Much better to ask how water, rain or condensate is prevented from collecting or building up rather than assuming. Kind regards etc.
