Sviatoslav Richter is perfectly in line with these mysterious "thoughts of the dead", which insipe to Liszt one of his strangest pieces.

The subject of death is a good one. Richter was quite obsessed with it, and that is one of the reasons he was so strongly alive! He has played for the funerals of all the major German and Russian authorities at his time, from Hindenburg to Stalin, and artists from Yudina to his beloved teacher, Neuhaus. Also please consider listening to Funérailles by Franz Liszt that he played splendidly. In fact, this shows that Richter was a really spiritual person while being an atheist-yes, this is possible! A Soviet pianist with a lot of spirituality? Yes, that was Richter. On the outside level he was compliant to the regime, but inside he was a believing Christian, and his motivation to play Bach in his thirties (while most Russians did not like that) was fueled by this intrinsic Christian conviction of his own (which went totally contrary to his Soviet education, as Andrei Gavrilov told me in private correspondence). And judge for yourself, please. As for me, Richter's Bach is magnificent, an opinion my friend Andrei Gavrilov did not share at all. Never mind, we are free to have our opinions. Richter's Bach for me is coming right from his soul, and so does his Liszt, and his Schubert.

Why sir, the manner in which you marry embarrassing truisms to extreme self-importance and throw in a sprinkle of name dropping for good measure makes me want to find out more about your writing. Where can one find the fountain of your wisdom to drink from?

Of course one can be atheist and spiritual, it's the right of every rational being. A religion is only a specific "guess".

very difficult to define spiritual though and remember lucifer was the most spiritual of all some ppl say to me they go to the woods to talk to god etc why go to church? well why go and have piano lessons to play the piano? very similar thing i think its just an atheists get out clause whilst not wanting to admit he is totally cold ? im an agnostic btw but a strong one in that i believ in a god as much as i believe in a chocolate teapot flying behinds saturn - 99,9999% improbable

I always found thid piece strange. What are, for an ardent catholic likr Lisztn the "pensée des morts?". Is it simply a metaphor? I never solved that mystery. The piece is awesome from a musical point of view. Most of the pianistic formulas invented by Liszt are here. The virtuosity is rather in the center of the piece.

It is an amalgam of the original "Harmonies"-piece and the piano concerto "De Profundis" (as somebody else also pointed out in Spanish here), both dating from around 1834. Liszt was a catholic but also a freemason, so he wasn't that strict. But his faith prevented him from terminating his life, as he later hinted at.
