Can you offset the markers a little? As a music editor who started back with mag and 1/4", I learnt very quickly that a "beat" has a length to it. Most tempo identification software finds the loudest part of the beat, but if you edit your picture to the front of the beat, normally just before the loudest, or even the tiniest fraction earlier, then you don't get that slightly laggy feeling you have here - it becomes more musical. The same with music editing. When I first edited digitally, so long ago now, I noticed my edits were in time but didn't sound so nice as when I edited manually with tape, razor blade, and sticky tape. Thinking about how I edited, I realised that when I rocked the tape back and forth over the play head of the tape machine, what I was listening for was the beginning of the beat - that tiniest ramp up. Editing using waveform, I went for the obvious peak, and it wasn't as good. So, nudging the music that tiniest fraction later might make it much better.
@AironExTv Жыл бұрын
Same for me. Editing on 1/4 was good prep. The visual impact has a different time to register in the brain than the audio. Resolve does make it rather easy, since you can just mark the picture cut and shift it slightly, or shift the audio instead. They use the same keys as PT does too for frame shift. "," and "." . Now they just need to give the Fairlight page its own keymap, and I'd be a lot happier using that for sound editing. Interesting script. Neat for picture editors. Casie, all my life I've kept hearing from picture editors that cutting on the beat is not a great idea, and so far I've found they're usually right. But it's a start :) .
@mamoworldae Жыл бұрын
Very good point! It is in deed to some extend a matter of taste if you want to offset the markers a tiny bit. At the top of my feature request list I actually have to implement a little extra tool to shift markers. Until then, your best option is probably to create timeline markers and then move the song itself a bit (clip markers will move with the song, but timeline markers won't).

You can ofcourse use it as it is now and when you matched the markers with the cuts: move the audio track a few frames, then all the cuts are the same distance from the marked peak. It's almost the same effort as dailing in an option to do it automatically 🤷♂️

I've learned (especially in music vids) to not always cut on the beat...to use discretion because just as with the overuse of slomo, the edit can become predictiable and unintentionally bore/lose your audience. But yes, tools such as this can work wonders when used wisely! Thanks for the vid!! P.S. Also, for a more "human" feel, you can tap out your beats in real time with markers and catch the natural rhythms other than just the peaks ( audio peaks don't always corelate with our visions' "sense" of rhythm haha) Peace.

I used to do a lot of music videos and the click wave that you showed at the end - if it works as it looks like it works that would have been a really timesaver. Part of the older music videos was preparing a lip sync track for bands to play along with. But they all required a decent count in, so players could start together - especially drummers. So I would have to create a count in, which of course had to be at the tempo and be before the song starts - So what I used to do is tap the count on a desktop with a mic on it. Then check it against the waveform and grab two bars - cut it and paste it into a leader area in the edit. When I first starting do that it was in audio programs, but eventually we would build the pre - shooting tracks on an ipad with a really large SMPTE timecode playing to which an assistant on set would hold it up and all the cameras would catch the Timecode - then the count in would come on and all the cameras would shoot the video. Then later I could line up all the sync on the camera by matching the recorded playback to the cameras shot of the SMPTE captured before countdown. Anyway - just creating that count in was time consuming. Then when in edit - I would count and tap my foot and put markers down as a guide for switching on the beat. So this in my opinion, is a really great tool, if it works as your demo of it shows. Nice find Casey.

Find the BPM of your song and use a click generator for the entire duration of the song, when you just align the clips you can pretty much see the beats and do whatever you wish. I wouldn't pay 50$ for this. Edit: you can double or halve the BPMs if you want 1/2 or 1/8 which is helpful

@mamoworldae Жыл бұрын
There is probably no rule without an exception. But usually, you want your cuts to go unnoticed,, since the viewer should focus on the story and not on cuts. And a good way to "hide" the cuts is to make them happen at beats. Sometimes it is also a good idea to let key actions happen in sync with the beats.

@mamoworldae Жыл бұрын
Hi Alex, as any artificial intelligence, BeatEdit is not always 100% accurate, but in the majority of cases it works very well. Hence, I wonder if it is just a matter of using it the right way. Here is a list of the things that might go wrong and possible workarounds: Timeline Frame Rate Could it be that your timeline has a different frame rate than the project? If so, please try to set the frame rate in the project settings to the same frame rate that your timeline has, before you create the markers. Background: Resolve has a very annoying limitation in its scripting API - scripts like BeatEdit cannot figure out what frame rate a timeline has. Therefore, if it is not the same frame rate as the one of the project, the markers will be placed at the wrong frames. It would be very interesting to hear if only the markers are at the wrong locations or if also the clicks sound off. If the beat clicks are also off, it is not the frame rate, but if the clicks sound good, the frame rate is most likely the issue. Beats very close to, but not at peaks If your issue is that the beats are not exactly at the peaks of the waveform, see this tutorial for an explanation: mamoworld.com/tutorials/no-beats-are-not-peaks To judge the quality of the predicted beats, I highly recommend to listen to the beat click audio generated by BeatEdit and check if these sound in sync with the music. This is much more reliable than checking if the markers line up with the waveform. Live music and other music with tempo changes If you work with music that was performed live (and without a metronome) the tempo is often changing a little bit over time. In these cases, you need to disable the “quantize” option of BeatEdit, which is enabled by default. Quantization makes sure that all beats have exactly the same distance, which usually makes the result even more accurate, but does not make sense, if the tempo of the song changes over time. Classical music and other music where the rhythm is not very prominent Music that has no drums or other prominent peaks is a challenge for every beat detector. For these kinds of songs, BeatEdit will often still predict the correct beats, but sometimes it does not find the correct beats. If the results are bad, first check if they improve if you disable quantization. If this does not help, not that even if the beats are not correct, BeatEdit will still place the markers at intense or “rhythmically relevant” points of the music. So if your goal is to place cuts that harmonize with the music, the markers can still be useful, despite not being the correct beats in the strict musical sense. If you are not sure, what the issue might be in your case, you can also send me a song (best in an aescripts support ticket) and I can take a look at it and check what is going wrong. Cheers, Mathias

I'm really looking forward to using this. I've been using the Premiere BeatEdit plugin for quite a while and it's life changing! I'm curious how they compare with each other. It looks like the Resolve version gives different colored markers for each beat of the measure, this is a feature not found in the Premiere verison. I assume you can then go in and delete all the markers of a certain color so you are left with only the first beat of each measure, which helps tremendously with the music edits. The Premiere version allows you to make markers every x number of beats. Fantastic videos Mr Faris, you almost singlehandedly helped me switch from Premiere to DaVinci Resolve. Your videos are the first I look for when trying to learn something new.
@mamoworldae Жыл бұрын
You are right that BeatEdit for Premiere Pro and Resolve are quite different. The beat detector working in the background is identical, but the user interface and the features on top of that are very different, since Resolve and Premiere are actually very different.
