@@meaningpeace I haven't actually read anything on webtoon in a while, but I used to read let's play and lore olympus pretty regularly (I know, I know). Your joke about how the girl is like ALWAYS 5ft reminded me of how in LO, literally all of the girls are like half the size of the men. The heights have always been pretty inconsistent but I remember how friggin SHORT they kept making Persephone compared to Hades, literally like a child.
@nyxcharliechaos
@nyxcharliechaos Ай бұрын
@@localplaguenurse I get what point you were making and I'm just gonna be blunt cause idk how else to say it but saying that someone looks like a child is infantilizing, idk I'm 5'1 and get mistaken for a kid a lot and it's just annoying, but yeah I get the point, it's odd how often you'll have a 5ft protagonist with a 6'7 dude every time, like I personally like height differences but it's so constant and extreme with webtoon comics, especially the ones with anime-esque art styles, and I get exaggerating height is a thing but I feel like the more realistic an art style is the less that works, idk sorry if I seemed rude dude, have a good day
@localplaguenurse
@localplaguenurse Ай бұрын
@@nyxcharliechaos No I get that 100%. I don't know how familiar you are with LO, but it has a problem with consistently making the height differences between male and female characters comedically large. Persephone specifically gets it the worst because genuinely, when she's not drawn with her boobs semi visible, she almost looks like an actual child sometimes. It doesn't help that for most of the first half of the story, she's 19 years old. (In which case I guess that's intentional? But it's still not great considering a lot of the major story arcs.) Like with all the other women, they're short, but you never doubt that they're adults. I've never looked at Hera or Aphrodite and thought "you look like a child" like I have with Persephone. I don't know if this problem gets better in more recent chapters because I'm not up to date, but that's a pretty common criticism of the series.

The way I see it, the trope has three main problems; 1. The writers don't examine the characters deep enough and end up writing the archetype itself instead of developing fleshed-out characters. 2. It's been done to death. Any trope that is done to death with this many moving parts tends to get so stale after the 200th time. 3. Most people are not either womanizing douchebags or passive, overlooked flowers waiting to bloom. When a 'type appears more often in fiction than in reality, it _should_ be because of that type has extra narrative potential. For instance, the noble yet naive hero with a glaring character flaw but courageous heart keeps occurring because he's a natural candidate for adventure stories--he just fits. The archetypes in this trope have no such advantage in narrative potential, and are only recurring because of writers who either haven't taken off their training wheels and are stuck in "imitation" mode, or stuck behind publishers who think readers like it cliche'.

I think the reason there isn't a name for this trope is because it's actually multiple tropes that are just popular to put together. Like, 'womanizing bad boy feels true love for the first time' + 'plain girl who struggles to attract boys' + 'innocent girl with a heart of gold' etc. etc. They're all really basic, barebones tropes that bad writers like to throw together because combining a bunch of them is an easier to way to make a story 'deep' or complex than writing actual substance is. It's easier for bad writers to made trope salad than it is to write original material.

It's also so sexist because the girl is always this helpless damsel who can't help but be swept away by the events of the story without a thought in her head. Both boys fight over her like an object and it's like her consent isn't even necessary, she will just get the jerk by the end because he said so. It's very problematic. Cmon, girls are not dumb and we shouldn't treat them that way and we shouldn't be teaching boys that this is somehow appropriate because it's so not, it's an awful thing to do.

Its terrible narratively don't get me wrong but its badness has nothing to do with sexism, for one only women authors write these types of stories, and its not teaching boys anything about romance because guys don't read these stories because these are wish fulfillment stories, and the secondary male lead legitimately competing with the other male lead for the girls attention does not appeal. Guys read and write the opposite where a bland guy is being lusted after by a bunch of women, has nothing to do with sexism, people are just lazy and want others to do all the work of making a relationship work for them.

I have to agree. The main problem is that the characters are written to fulfill the narrative conflict rather than being developed to have the plot happen naturally around them. Most times, we don't even get to know what caused them to grow apart nor how they even feel towards each other besides the bland statements they make to others on the subject. Id say the trope doesn't really have a name, at least not one known to me, but I think it's more endemic as a failure in writing one or both characters. If we knew their inner workings, were able to get attached to them and had how they both see the conflict and why they feel the way they do about it, then it wouldn't be nearly as bad. Great short, by the way. nice and to the point with some great drawings. Keep it up :D

This trope, though... while I'm sure the rule still applies, I have yet to see a good example of it if it's out there. Most of the time, stories like this treat the characters as their tropes and nothing more. Tropes are meant to be frameworks, NOT the story itself, which is the thing all writers should understand! I agree, as a writer it wasn't my favorite take, especially the bit about how unlikeable the characters are, because it seemed to be chastity shaming, and like, if we're going to talk about slut shaming and the obsession with virginity we also have to talk about the pressure younger and younger women feel to be sexual and date, and how they're literally shamed if they don't develop an interest in romance right away, even if they don't end of being any of the completely valid sexualities like lesbian or asexual.

The thing is, it could work if you play with it a bit. -The childhood friend could be like that for reasons that don't justify it but can grow out of it and become more self-aware without getting the girl. He could actually be protective, but it's rich coming from him. He could still be the same kid, just that he gains that bad reputation that the girl never noticed since she doesn't see the full picture (you can live your entire life with someone and still not know everything about them). -The girl could be desperate since she has no boys interested in her, oblivious to the point that it drives everyone that already knew her away except the new kid who never knew because he's new, naive since she only sees the good in people (not noticing the bad), self-absorbed (like the third example of the friend with her not seeing the full picture), or manipulative (she HAS been around that kid during childhood, she could pick some things up from him, *or* she's the where he picked that behaviour up from since he's so close to her). -The new kid could be socially stunted, so they need someone patient like the girl to understand everything. He could be an initial rival but quickly becomes friends with the childhood friend or at least finds common ground with them. He could pick up on what's going on and either bail, take advantage, or try to get everything aired to avoid possible tragedy. It could also work by seemingly making it like it's played straight, but in reality, it's anything but (like that's what it looks like to everyone else, so they spin that narrative because they assume it is, but it could cause harm since "Don’t assume, it makes an ASS out of U and ME!")

I like your idea. I wanna add that maybe like the childhood friend guy can be unconsciously in love with his childhood friend, but he's scared of ruining the friendship they already have, so he goes to make a persona of being a womanizer to get those feelings off his mind. But once the new guy comes, he feels jealous, and conflicted as the feelings that he was so desperately pushing away, just comes crashing back at him. (That's so cliche and probably part of the trope that is being parody-ed in this video, but it kinda works)

@@yuri-sama.questionmark Or, it could be one of his very few healthy/stable relationships. It goes well till the new boy comes around, making him fear that it may cause them to drift further and possibly end the relationship. Due to this fear, he steps up his game, bending himself backwards to keep her around. However, by doing so, he's putting the relationship under strain, putting more effort than anybody is comfortable with, and pushing the limits of their boundaries when they're needed to keep the relationship functioning. In the end, either he realizes what he's doing is wrong and steps back, finally growing up, or it tragically ends in a self-fulfilling prophecy, either by destroying their relationship or poisoning it. Like ending up with her, but neither is happy, or not ending up with her but making her stop seeing the guy. However, he's become so used to controlling the situation that he can't stop out of paranoia, thus losing all stability or good health in their relationship.

I think this trope is called the Maiden and the Naive. Though it seems to be mixed with childhood friends... I think there is a less toxic version called the Lady and the Naive, where the female is more confident and mature and thus is more able to put the man in his place from the start. As a guy I am obviously not a fan of this trope, It's certainly not for me. Though it's inverse has some appeal, a shining knight and a femme fatale. Probably the most mainstream depiction of this relationship is Batman and Catwoman, though Batman's role as a shining knight is less readily apparent. Still overall "I can fix them" romances have SO many toxic elements...

Yeah I agree, it's kind of a shame, I'm a sucker for childhood friends to lovers, or childhood friends that drift apart then come back together and fall in love, and I do have a big soft spot for bad boys with a heart of gold, all of this is my bread and butter, my jam even But this specific set up, the love triangle, the womanizer, the sweet innocent uwu girl, that's just not it at all

I'm now waiting for the story to reveal that John's feelings are indeed a weird mix of protectiveness for Jane, and later down the line he realizes he's also physically attracted to Joe so he's also jealous of Jane not about her. // This is a joke, but I kind of like the idea.

I personally hate the romance trope where the couple starts off genuinely hating each other and then suddenly they have feelings for each other. Or they just have feelings after like a nothing special reveal (like oh, he's a jerk because of his mommy issues) and then after he opened up I'm just supposed to ignore that they've been hostile towards each other for over an hour.

these stories are made for women. that's why the woman is a blank slate : women can project themselves onto her. that's also why the boy is super attractive. also, mate choice copying comes in because it's a shortcut for writing attractiveness : "he is so great because other women want him so badly" he then always gives up the 20 other girls for the main character because a woman's fantasy is that a perfect man choses her over the 20 other women he _could_ be getting. it's lazy writing, but it gets'em wet every time. it also gets women to fork over money to read the crap.

Capitalizing on delusional horny people works lmao. Also as a woman (I don’t read these kinda books or do that stuff but still) I can confirm that it’s pretty much it tbh. Project onto the character, and feel wanted because ya don’t get it from anywhere else. Same thing happens with h3ntaı for men.

A cool twist to this trope could be the guy growing to be the naive wall flower and the girl the popular player. Their could be some social comentary of sexism about how the guy is judge because he is a virgin and the girl is judge because she is consider a slut and they reconnect as something more because of the judgement of others. Still very predictible and barebone, but it sounds a little fresher. For it to truly work, the guy must be soft spoken and shy and the girl direcct and at times cold.

I love to write stories, and I got bored of this trope as well. So i made up my own version (Although i haven't gotten the chance to write it down yet. So far its just an idea) We have the sweet innocent girl, the bad boy and the player boy. The boys were fighting over the girl like always. But they have been fighting over her for so long that they got to know eachother really well. Little did they know, they started to grow feelings for eachother, and weren't very good at hiding it. The girl picked up on this and thought it was adorable. She never really had an interest in the two either way. And so, she started shipping them. Sometimes she would bring both of them on a date qt the same time. She did this so that the two would be in a romantic atmosphere together. And im sure you have an idea on what will happen next.

I think Jhon who firstly thought he was jelous of Joe, meets up with Jane was it? And they go on a date together, Jhone realized that they didn't click, while Joe seems to be more in sollitude and apprehensive about their date. Then one night Jane is gone, and both boys meet up to find her they go on a wacky nighttime search, a wild goose chase to find jane because they both think they like her. But as the night goes on they realize that they actually like eachother and not Jane. They find her at Alissa (The girl Jhon lead on and used) who jane is now dating. Jhone apologizes and stops his Fuck mission and decides to have a loving relationship with Joe. They go on double dates, jhone apollogizes to all the girls he hurt and they are happy and gay.

The name of the trope is ✨"Twilight/Wattpad fanfiction Slop,"✨ where every writer, thinking they're appealing to the mind of the average young girl, tries to shoehorn the Twilight formula in their webtoon or webnovel because they don't have the skill to write anything of substance and want to appeal to what sells the most (or sold the most, In Twilight's case).

Everyone is swooning over him and here the girl gets jealous?? I may have completely remembered it wrong but it was something messy like that.
