What a great conversation! I'm always fascinated by which books publishers decide to throw their money behind. As Sophia points out, Sally Rooney does not need a splashy party with merch and baked goods to sell her book, she doesn't even need to show up for her own party, lol! But publishers do love backing a sure thing. I have enormous respect for authors who (can and want to) step in and control their own marketing, as much as possible. It doesn't always move the needle on book sales but it do think it gives some semblance of control in an industry that is famously fickle.
