The last two seasons I have struggled with carrots, I have tried different seed producers and different methods. I have three successional rows with no more than 6 germinated in each row…! I ditched raised beds four years ago because they tend to harbour slugs and instead have adopted Charles Dowding no dig beds, which has helped both with slugs and weeds.

It's brown spot..not as bad as full on blight but still annoying.. I got it last year on one of my potatoe varieties, so I removed the affected leaves. Then I sprayed the rest of the leaves with a bicarb water mix every so often and it helped. I managed to keep them going long enough to have a fairly good harvest still!!

Got to agree that touching those potatoes then going to the tomatoes is asking for trouble. I'd have moved them next to the compost box as soon as I'd seen it to keep the spores as far away as possible

Try an ola pot for your tomato planters if you go away. Buy a cheap terracotta pot, plug the hole at the bottom (concrete or mastic works) fill with water and cover with a lid or stone. Water drains out as the plant needs it

I don't worry too much about early blight. I would give the plants a feed and wait till the tops die down in two or three weeks.

Great video, Tony, About the potatoes, last year I had the same problem, but one another gardener suggested to try and feed them a bit more with tomato feed. Worked brilliant. I did water them first with half a watering can each, then after about half an hour later, I will water them again with half a watering can tomato feed(diluted as it says on the bottle). Done that every week ones. After the second week, they came back, and I had a great harvest. Thanks for the video again Well done

Hello , me again David . One thing we tend to forget whether we garden on a plot or a garden it is the evaporation , it can lead to a huge loss of water , whether it be in soil or man made boxes Seem's silly that these are made Black , the colour that deflect's heat is White & less water loss ? . It appears you are moving to a less intensive garden plot. Remember t is still all about the main ingredient water . Water, it is a complex substance , we take it for granted yet it is the one thing you need to grow anything .As for carrot's , it is all about the soil . It is all about fine fine soil . Hope this help's ?

Couldnt quite see. But considering its in a pot, it may be magnesium deficiency. Causes brown spots/patches on the leaves. Not all brown spots are blight. But it has been very wet of late.

Hi Tony, your potatoes look hungry, deficiency can often look like blight. Bearing in mind the trouble you have had with compost this year, it could be an answer. Best wishes Jenny

Allotment is looking well, would you not consider doing carrots in a bucket in the poly? I'm doing baby carrots I sowed them into a window box, they came up and I've thinned them out, this year was my last attempt so keep them crossed.

Have you tried the carrot seeds on the tape? We have had decent result the last few years with them.

If you're relying on kale as a staple crop and also seeking a lower workload, maybe consider getting some Taunton Deane kale cuttings. It's perennial and produces a really good volume of leaves almost all year round.

looks like blight, i'm sorry. seems early, usually it's july or so. for carrots, were they fresh seeds? also they prefer cold temps to germinate and need to be kept moist, I never had problems. my problem this year are slugs..they eat everything, even tomato plants! they've never done that before :-(

Early Blight, we had the same in May last year. Lost a couple but others got through. To be fair volunteer Potatoes are the biggest source of spreading this disease. Someone on your plots is the source of the disease and the weather spreads it like wildfire.

We have a excess of snails this year, I haven't a runner bean left considering buying some in but realistically will they survive any better than the ones I grew?
