The Simpsons Halloween spoof was one of my favorite. Marge - “Do you see towels? If you see towels you’re probably in the linen closet again.” Homer- “No. Im somewhere I’ve never been before.” Selma: “The shower. Hah hah hah.”

Richard Matheson is one of my favorite writers, Twilight Zone is my favorite TV show ever, so the two of them combined is always a treat! I saw the Simpsons parody and Poltergiest first, but Little Girl Lost still held up! Such a great concept and really well executed. Thank you for diving into some of the behind-the-scenes. It was fascinating to learn! You do incredible work on your channel! Thank you so much for providing such amazing content!

Awesome review. This is definitely a classic episode. I grew up in the 80’s as well and remember all of those stranger danger and cartoon segments warning us kids. Now as a parent I also view it in a whole different perspective. May sound crazy but my favorite part of this episode is when Charles Aidman marks the edge of the portal in broad chalk strokes. Although arcing the lines are steady and sharp. Not only could he act but he could also rock a sick chalk outline lol.

Great video Anthony! As always, well researched, entertaining and full of interesting factoids surrounding the episode. Talk of the missing children on milk cartons reminded me of that 90s song Runaway Train by Soul Asylum. You remember that? I think some of the missing kids were actually found as a direct result of that song. Poltergeist scared the hell out of me as a kid. That combination of Spielberg and Tobe Hooper was pure gasoline. Really enjoyed watching this FDT video, thanks man!

Runaway Train by Soul Asylum...yes! Just went back to listen to that again after you noted it. Spielberg and Tobe Hooper crafted a masterpiece with Poltergeist. I see Matheson's point about certain elements feeling inspired by his tale, but to be fair there's also so much more to Poltergeist that makes it unique on its own. In any case, a rather fun discussion. Thanks as always for checking in Greg, be well man!

That was an excellent video. Still not seen this episode but it I sure remember that amazing Simpsons episode. We also had some creepy "stranger danger" type PSAs. The Charley Says one from the UK was a standout. I was not aware that Poltergeist lifted some ideas from this but it sure looks like it. Surprised Matheson did not reach for the lawyers for lack of story credit. When I feel satisfied that I know all there is on Tobe Hooper's classic (Yes he directed it!)I get more nuggets of knowledge from one of the best KZbin channels of all time.

Yeah it's a bummer. The more I look back at these older shows, the more I see all these accusations back and forth of uncredited story ideas taken for other projects. To me Poltergeist is a masterpiece and has more than enough original elements. But I also get Matheson's point about key aspects being used as well. lol I also went down the rabbit hole on older PSAs....very creepy stuff.

Jeeze, this is like discovering a song you love was a just a remake/sample of a song from 40 years prior. It's cool when artists do it, I love it actually, but when I love a song for long and don't even know it, I don't love that, lol. I wish Matheson also got the credit he deserved for Poltergeist too, it's so crazy that he didn't. Man, that visual effect being created with just slight of camera angles and lighting is pretty slick, really amazing innovation. And LMAO to the stranger Danger era, McGruff makes me laugh now but he sure did save a lot of kid's lives. 😂 Wonderful insight into this one, Anthony! ✨

Hi Anthony. Thanks for covering one of my all-time favorite episodes, and one of the most _TZ_ feeling in its plot, themes and overall vibes. I'd say "Little Girl Lost" can rightly be described as implicitly Lovecraftian--and, thus, cosmic--horror, as it intimates that we are not so important in a universe (multiverse?) that in the end is totally indifferent to the plights of humanity. The episode strikes me as just as concerned outré geometry as it is about weird physics, or how the disciplines intersect. One need only do a search for the terms "Lovecraft" and "Non-Euclidean geometry" to appreciate just how much the concept is pretty central to his Cthulhu Mythos In one Mythos tale, "The Dreams in the Witch House", a central plot line concerns traversing "an adjacent but normally inaccessible dimension". "Little Girl Lost" is for me as close as it gets to a perfect _TZ_ episode. Yes, there are a couple of problems, such as the plot hole of having their friend Bill help out, oh, and Bill "just so happens" to be a theoretical physicist. Handy, no? And then there's little Tina Miller being voiced by Rhoda Williams, an actress then in her early 30s, and the effect doesn't quite come off. Tracy Stratford, who played the role, was also in the "Living Doll" episode as Christie, possessor of the Talky Tina doll. The great June Foray voiced the doll, and would have been more convincing as the disembodied Tina Miller; perhaps she wasn't available. Then again, why didn't they just use Tracy's own voice, which was just fine in "Living Doll"; maybe she had laryngitis, who knows? Along with "And When the Sky Was Opened", this episode reminds me of the famous Lovecraft quote taken from _The Call of Cthulhu:_ “We live on a placid island of ignorance in the midst of black seas of infinity, and it was not meant that we should voyage far.” The strange other dimension is depicted well by the special effects department (one can almost imagine a tentacle reaching out to grab Tina), and the eerie vibes are added to by Bernard Herrmann's haunting score. The harp glissando and piping flutes really match the visions in that scene, and are no doubt what many viewers remember most about the music, but I notice a more subtle Herrmann touch that really sets the mood right from the start. Listen to the four-note motif repeated a few times in the opening minute. For me, it sounds like he's written something that sounds like Tina plaintive cries going "Momm-my, Dadd-dy. Momm-my, Dadd-dy". kzbin.info/www/bejne/jGPMgaqNq6uWo7c *5 out of 5 interdimensional stars* You & your viewers may find this video of interest: "The Math of H. P. Lovecraft: Understanding Non-Euclidean Geometry" kzbin.info/www/bejne/rmTYoI1qj5KMbqM Thanks again, Anthony. Stay safe and do well!

Hey Galantski! It's always great to hear that I've touched on someone's favorite TZ. I'm finding that with each entry, I never know which one will be someones favorite. I'm glad you brought up Lovecraft and the cosmic horror influences. I was considering pivoting into that topic a bit more after The Re-Animator nod. This episode had so much trivia, so I ended up streamlining in editing. Which typically works out, because you guys tend to bring your own additional points into the discussion as well - which is appreciated! Speaking of which, I'll check out your link, "The Math of H. P. Lovecraft: Understanding Non-Euclidean Geometry" - thanks as always, be well & have a great week ahead!

Great vid! Great Zone! I didn’t know Matheson wrote it. I love his book I Am Legend. And Duel is amazing. Fascinating info in your vid! That’s great that Spielberg asked him his opinion on Steel. Cameron should have done that with Harlan Ellison and Terminator. That’s cool that that actor became the 80’s Zone host. Wow, Rod wrote great lines for himself in this ep. The “mechanics” of the Twilight Zone! Interesting info about the wall effect and the true story behind the story. Hey Max! Looking forward to Mystical Creepy Theater! I hear you about Cameron / Harlan Ellison. One thing that it is a bit of a bummer is I find as I go through these, I see many accounts of sci-fi writers saying their story was stolen or they were not credited or something along those lines. I agree, this episode also featured such an excelent narration from Serling. Thanks for watching man, be well! 🤜🤛

Leave it to Richard Matheson to write a classic! The 4th dimension scenes always reminded me of "The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari" or some of those old German Expressionist films. I forgot Charles Aidman was in this one too; I need to watch it again. Great review as always man!

Hey Betamax! Yes, The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari...I could see that. They did pretty well overall as that's a difficult concept to capture on camera and with a limited 60's tv budget. In my research I saw that all the production team had to go from was "LIMBO" in the script. So it was really up to the team to figure it all out. On a related note, in Nightmare on Elm street 5 there was a cool dream sequence toward the end reminiscent of M. C. Escher's work. That's what I tend to imagine when it comes to these dreamy landscapes or alternate dimensions. Thanks as always for checking in man....have a good week ahead!

Anthony! Happy post Labor Day and I hope you had a great holiday. Now on to business, tho there isn't much for me to say. Certainly your analysis is stellar as usual, and I can only add that this is one episode that I saw for myself (during the marathon during the Covid years?) and I found it equal parts engaging and frightening. I too am a parent and a lost child that you cannot find hits very very hard. But I can also relate to the child and to you as a youngster...the milk cartons and the constant PSAs might have been overkill, especially since most kidnappings are perpetrated by kin and kith, and not strangers. But at the time, as a young adult and soon to be parent, the entire awareness campaign seemed justified. Before that, missing children cases were not always given the high priority or publicity, where we have since learned that the first 48 hours are critical if you want the child back safe and sound. Too often, the police would take a wait and see attitude, figuring most kids are just out late or runaways and will come home...and well, most do. But too many didn't. And the enforced wait was a literal killer. I guess it's worth a few nightmares, just to be safe. Then again, I had my own nightmares as a child, running endlessly down sunny, tree lined streets, to get away from 'childnappers'...nothing to do with the Zone, but it seems to be a common fear among kids. The kids of my parents' generation had the Lindbergh baby's kidnapping on their minds, and I doubt that Rod and Co wouldn't have come up with Little Girl Lost sooner or later ... Its just one of those nightmares that are evergreen as a subject ripe for terror. Later!
@FeverDreamlandTheater
@FeverDreamlandTheater 10 ай бұрын
Hi Marie, always great to hear from you! 😊 I agree totally, as much as the milk cartons and PSA's may have been a bit much, at least for me as a kid, in reality anything that helps keep kids safe, make them more vigilant and raises awareness is ultimately a positive thing. Especially in a time long before Amber alerts and social media, you just needed to spread the word. Thanks as always for the kind words! Take care and have a good week ahead!
