It's mostly the MSX computer VN and princess raising games. That artstyle is also very derivative and limited to technology by its own right, not to criticize but it becomes very distilled and has it own look going 110%. It's smae kind of thing as anime itself was heavily distilled from Disney to be anime instead.

If you've seen Ashita no nadja, Cardcaptors, Magic Knight Rayearth, or any others; there was always the handsome mysterious love interest. But since this is lesbian/yuri/GL, the hot mysterious guy trope won't be in the game sadly.

@@milmil5350 Cardcaptors didn't have a handsome love interest, the love interest was a little boy the same age as Sakura. The only handsome mysterious guy was the alter ego of her brother's boyfriend, and the wizard dude. Also you were apparently a CLAMP fan, but not enough of a fan to pick up on how gay all their work was. Hell, even Sailor Moon was super gay, aside from Tuxedo Mask.

Considering the Extra Content shown in Pocket Mirror ~ GoldenerTraum ~... (SPOILER... maybe?) ... the canon ending seems to involve Elise choosing Rozenmarine as her lover, but Elise ultimately betrays the girl to obtain her "chance at happiness" through the Strange Boy's devil deal, which leads her to meet and marry Roman die Heiligue. At least, I think that's how the canon ending will go, we'll see.

I've had some Cardcaptor Sakura on VHS and grew up with all those things, like Magical Doremi, Sailor Moon or Kiki's Delivery Service... A lot of the music I've made for this game have strong influences from those anime as a result but Thumbelina completely flew under my radar, somehow! Yeah, I'm being reminded of the Lunar RPG series that came out on SEGA CD and PS1. Working Design was responsible for publishing the Lunar series in the US on both consoles back in the 90's. The 90's anime artwork and aesthetics takes me back to that era when 90's anime like Sailor Moon, Magic Knight Rayearth, Devil Hunter Yohko, Fushigi Yugi, Blue Seed, Nadia: The Secret of Blue Water, and probably others that I can think of stand out to anime fans that have good taste.

This game looks very appealing and I really like the fact that the protagonist can't just fight monsters in the woods because she is just a small human but she goes into the forest anyway. Also, the village life plotline seems very interesting with romancing ladies and trying to avoid raising suspicions of being a witch. Can't wait to see more of this story!

The whole time I was watching the trailer I was debating whether this was a port of an untranslated/unreleased 90s JP game or a retro homage. I think when I saw there were cutscenes that not only look like top-quality studio anime of the era (deep esoteric themes, realistic sociological modeling, and faded colors from VHS transfers and all), but were also in the 4:3 aspect ratio, I figured it JUST HAD to be a port, right? Surely nobody in the modern era is capable of recreating the superb artistry of the 90s that perfectly, right? Delighted to be proved wrong. Exemplary work, Astral Shift, greatly looking forward to purchasing this when it releases!

The lush, vibrant pixel graphics are amazing and pair well with the beautiful 90s-era anime sequences. Very nostalgic for those of us who came of age during that time. Curious if the animated sequences will feature in-game or are only presented for dramatic purposes of the trailer. Social management will be familiar to fans of Persona and the like but I wonder if anyone remembers the Princess Maker franchise? I don't think the first PM titles were ever localized here in the West as they were PC Engine games, but I remember playing the DS version of PM4. The numerous challenges of balancing social interactions while earning money, nurturing virtues/attributes, maintaining overall health, contending with rivals and connecting with potential romantic interests is all so strongly reminiscent of Princess Maker. The mounting pressure of knowing your decisions will have vast and far-reaching consequences on the outcome of the game and its multiple possible endings also gave it depth. As implied by the title, the "ideal" ending, but also the most standard, was to safely raise the protagonist from childhood to become a princess (complete with fairy tale ending with a prince). BUT she could also choose to become a queen, sovereign-in-her-own-right and many other occupations and lifestyles, all the way to spending her days just carefree and content with an ordinary life on her own terms. And of course, there were the multiple bad endings as well. It was very satisfying trying to achieve the various endings: royal or common; coupled or single; in the human or makai world etc. One of the more interesting aspects of PM was the adventuring/exploration segments which they sadly removed in PM4 but this game seems to have held on to that adventure aspect, a welcome sight. This game looks like a true labor of love and a heartfelt tribute to not just classic children's tales and adventure but also 90s anime. Looks like a winner. Definitely looking forward to playing this.

Now this is an interesting trailer. It connects gameplay footage (multiple samples and types, I might add) with cutscenes via a montage. And the narrator enforces the fairy tale like atmosphere with a grandmotherly voice. Not to mention that I can't tell if the narrator is a woman, or a man, or another gender. That helps with the anime esthetic and their occasional gender-fluid art style.

The artstyle and character design reminds me of Magic knight Rayearth for the Sega Saturn, also Magic Rayearth has its own share of dark and creepy locations.

It's so strange to think that the best endings to this game will probably be ones that DON'T lead to the events of Pocket Mirror. Would it be better for everyone involved for the Pocket Mirror timeline not to exist? I guess we'll have to see!
