I had a 1973 VW Squareback that actually had that same horn malfunction (an electrical short in the horn button) so I freaking died when that came up in the movie.

Apparently this movie was inspired by a speech Arnold Schwarzenegger gave to a group of high schoolers, telling them he despises losers. The screenwriter thought that was such horrible advice. I think deep down this movie is about setting your own standards for "winning," instead of worrying about whether you're a loser or not. Be yourself. Fuck the haters.

It’s obviously impactful by itself that Dwayne’s dream was crushed when he found out he was color blind, but the fact that he hadn’t spoken for nine months (or at any point in the movie up until now) and the first thing he said was just a raw expression of his pain and rage made it so much more impactful. Paul Dano was such an MVP in this movie imo.

Fun Fact: Creepy guy was actually a long suffering beauty queen Dad, not a random dude watching kids in swimsuits. I'll also add that I love that Olive is basically the glue for the family. Everything is going to hell, but her optimism and gentle spirit pulls everyone up when they need it most. I mean notice how she is the only one that Dwayne doesn't lash out at when he snaps and she's the one who gets him back to the van with a simple hug. Damnit, who's cutting onions. So glad you guys reacted to this movie. It doesn't get the attention it deserves. So well written, such great actors, so funny, so much love. I'm glad you watched this film.

Olive is just trying to chase her dreams the same way her big brother is trying to chase his which is I think something he can connect on. And she is so young and such a nice kid it's hard to blame her for anything, she's just a passenger in this chaos 😆

I definitely got overtaken by cringe as a kid watching this movie. As an adult I find it absolutely charming and beautiful. I cry at the end and when the brother realizes he can’t be a pilot. And I’m proud of it.

This film has so much heart and sweetness in it while being a rated R comedy. It's hard to balance those tones but this film did it so well. Great casting choices, great acting, great sound design and soundtrack, great screenplay. Just really well done. Never gets old.

I love Steve Carell's performance in this. It was actually the first time he played a dramatic role, and during filming he was not yet the huge movie star he was about to become due to the release of "The 40-Year-Old Virgin".

Same! It's the perfect movie for when you're feeling extremely down. And I didn't notice this until my most recent viewing: by the end of the movie, each character ends up in a conventionally worse spot than they were in at the beginning of the movie (pageant-obsessed Olive can't participate in California, Dwayne finds out he can't be in the Air Force, Richard's program is done, the family is bankrupt, etc...), but together, they're all far better than they ever were.

Rightfully so! She was so good and especially for her age. That moment when she asks her Grandpa if she's pretty and then talks about not wanting to be a loser breaks your heart! You really felt that she feared that her dad would hate her if she lost and it was so tragic, it just makes you so happy in the end with Richard's development.

when rewatching it this time from your reaction, I realized that, originally as a viewer I thought Olive had to succeed to make the whole trip worth it. I wasn't mad about the ending, but was like "awe". but this time, I realized that the fact that everyone at one point in the film failed. And for the final act, it was Olive's turn to fail and for her family to be there to support her through it like she was for them.

Such a great movie that also really highlights the weird pageant culture. I've been to a few (my goddaughter did it for a year) and there's nothing weirder than seeing 5 year olds in fake hair, fake eyelashes, spray tans, and flippers (snap in dentures to hide their baby teeth). A lot of parents will take out mortgages, loans, and all kinds of debt for their kid to win. It's insane. The weird emcee guy in the pageant really underplayed it; most of those guys have so much Botox that they look like their face is frozen in some rictus like grin. They all do the singing thing at the girls over the shoulder, and I don't know why. Also, Greg Kinnear is an underrated actor. He was so good in "Auto Focus," as the late actor Bob Crane.

Such a great film. I saw it in the theater when it came out. Packed house. When Olive walked out on that stage, and Rick James SUPERFREAK started playing, the entire theater went up in a roar of laughter, some claps and some “Yessss!!” and “Oh my God!”s 😂it was one of those rare moments in a movie, where it’s just magic. Pure magic. And every one of us in that theater was all the way in. It’s a terrific film; Stellar cast, great script, and it marks the discovery of Abigail Breslin, who was so incredibly natural, real and at times heartbreaking, as the endearing Olive; she played it straight from the heart, in her very first role. She’s grown now. And is still a great actress (loved her in Scream Queens). But she’ll forever be our Little Miss Sunshine. ♥️

Maybe my favorite movie, and maybe the only family dysfunction road-trip-from-hell movie that's positively joyous and life-affirming. The constant theme of pushing the bus is the perfect metaphor for the family's shared burdens; impossible to do alone, but together not only can they persevere, they can even laugh along the way. So many scenes still got me crying with laughter years later: 😂 "Not just one woman, a lot of women." "I still got Nazi bullets in my ass!" - the hospital escape - - the broken horn - "are you authorized to be backstage?" *no*

The one thing I thought was great and appreciate every time, is that all of Olive's outfits in the pageant were child appropriate. Even the bathing suit. Not covered in makeup, hairspray or tons of skin showing. I would support child pageants if these were the requirements. Unfortunately, that's not the case.
