CLIP DESCRIPTION:
When Frank (Steve Carell) breaks some very difficult news to Dwayne (Paul Dano), he starts to have a breakdown in the van, and the family pulls over.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
When a pudgy, bespectacled seven-year-old, Olive (Abigail Breslin), voices her desire to take home the coveted Little Miss Sunshine crown at an upcoming beauty pageant, her wildly dysfunctional family sets out on an interstate road trip to ensure her a clear shot at realizing her dreams in former music video directorial team Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris' quirky feature debut, starring Greg Kinnear, Steve Carell, and Toni Collette. Despite early career success as an outspoken motivational speaker, family patriarch Richard (Kinnear) continues to cling to his "Refuse to Lose" philosophy, much to the chagrin of his increasingly annoyed spouse, Sheryl (Collette). Add into the mix a Nietzsche-reading teenage son (Paul Dano) who has taken a vow of silence until he finds his fate as a fighter pilot; a horny, heroin-happy grandfather (Alan Arkin) with a penchant for creative profanity; and a suicidal genius (Carell) and Proust scholar still reeling about losing both his male lover and his MacArthur Foundation genius grant -- and the stage is set for a road trip in which sanity is sure to take the back seat.

I honestly do think this one of the best scenes in the movie. It really shows the character of Dwayne and how much he cared about his dream and the crushing realisation that he cannot obtain his dream is portrayed amazingly with Paul Dano's performance with the perfect amount of tragedy and defeat but not being 2 cheesy

I've been through this too but not because I was color blind. Like Dwaine, I wanted to become a fighter pilot. But I found out, through medical check-up, that my sight was slightly below 20/20. During 15 years, I prepared myself for this moment and it all went down in one hour.... I remember that....a true nightmare indeed. I can easily feel Dwaine's pain during this scene as I've been through it myself... Hopefully he never gave up flying 🙂

Last year, I got my LSA flying license, the theoretical LSA instructor license and the professional UAV pilot and instructor license. Ever since, no one ever told me to give up !! One of the best things about this scene is how much of a shift it is in the audience's perception of Dwayne. Up until this point, we don't get to know Dwayne too well. Sure, he's always around, and we know about his vow of silence and his goal to be a jet pilot, but not much else. The vow of silence and his appearance is all we get in terms of characterisation, and he's presented as mostly being a misanthropic, moody teenager. As such, an audience might not take him seriously, at least not as seriously as he takes himself. This scene shifts that. In one swift moment, the audience understands just how serious this all is for Dwayne. His commitment, his sacrifice, all shattered in an instant, and we the audience see it crashing down. And from here on, we see a Dwayne that is alert, energised, and who cares deeply about what's going on around him, especially when it comes to Olive. Immediately, Dwayne goes from the least sympathetic character to the most sympathetic.

My childhood dream was to become an Air Force pilot. However, when I grew up I was aware I couldn’t have been accepted because of my genetical astigmatism 🤓. Also, I got disappointed because in my country 🇲🇽 we have no fighter jets (we have only 10 F-5 Tigers, only 3 on service, only Black Hawk, Mi-17 and Panther helicopters and Hercules transport aircraft that are only used on parades or to help the victims of a natural disaster, and T-6 Texan planes for training) I had the dream to fly on a modern and more developed fighter such as an F-16 or an F/A-18, a JAS-39 Gripen or including a Russian built MiG or Sukhoi jet. Now I’m studying animation and art and I’m happy with my career. Now I hope to end up working as an artist and 3D animator on Disney Animation Studios or Pixar. If I followed that ancient dream to fly I could possibly be flying on a little and light plane for training that could make me an unhappy and disappointed aviator.

A cop caught me with a tiny bit of pot in my car back in 2016. I grew up on an airstrip and flying was my life, my dream and a major part of my identity. The pot charge made it impossible for me to ever get my license. I pun a gun to my head that night. This scene hits hard

When I was like 4, about 15 years ago, I saw this clip on a little tv at a hospital (I don’t remember why we were there) and it traumatized me as a little kid for some reason. I recall this scene in my head to this day some times for some reason and this is the first time I’m seeing it again.

I love the background music in this scene. The movie creators have said this movie is about what happens when dreams DON'T come true, for everyone in the family. The song shows some kind of innocence... It's not his fault his dreams were ruined at all, he has no control over his colorblindness, and he didn't deserve this. His dream was taken away from him and there's nothing he can do about it.

I had the exact same reaction when I got the news that my best friend died. Paul Dano portrayed getting hit with the worst news of your life absolutely perfectly. This is real stuff. I’m so glad he’s now getting the recognition he deserves as a great actor bc I’ve been following his career since this movie.

I loved this scene as a kid. It showed dwaynes real emotion for the first time. Now im 22, and i just found out I can't join my friend to apply for the Marines because of my Bi-Polar. Im at least glad i checked before starting 6 months of training because i would have had this exact reaction. Life throws a lot of s**t at you, and just when you think it's getting better, it shows you who the bigger man is and beats you down again.

Great acting from Paul Dano - Oscar right there. But most people have never witnessed a mental breakdown so it is under-rated.
