Little Nightmares: Tengu Theory (Story Explanation/Spoilers)

This doesn't necessarily connect to the tengu theory itself other than the fact it's based on Japanese and Shinto mythology. Okay, so after watching this video I was wondering if yellow had any connection to any Japanese and Shinto mythology, since Six is wearing a yellow raincoat that usually stands out compared to the rest of the world. (AKA; I looked it up based on a simple character design and a whim.) Yet I came up to find that the name of the Japanese underworld, Yomi no Kuni or 黄泉の国, can translate to "Yellow Springs" or "Yellow Wells". What's so interesting about this is that if one eats food from the hearth in Yomi no Kuni, they cannot leave. (Not unlike the Greek myth of Persephone in Hades.) And you always see guest arriving and eating at the Maw, but never leaving. I just thought that this was an interesting thing to come across given the Japanese theme of the second half of the game and the similarites of Yomi no Kuni and the guests of the Maw and the Maw itself. Maybe someone else has already thought of this, but I haven't seen nor heard anyone mention Yomi no Kuni at all in their theories. So, here's my comment doing just that.

I find merit to your tengu theory, but I believe Six is a different creature entirely. I believe that Six is a baku. Baku are youkai that inhabit the dream world and therefore possess the ability to manipulate and consume dreams or nightmares. Humans may summon a baku to consume a nightmare for them allowing them the rest peacefully. There is, however, a catch: Call upon a Baku to frequently and it shall consume your dreams and aspirations as well, leaving you hollow and devoid of joy. Perhaps the Geisha managed to steal Six's powers and cast her aside. Six being a baku also explains the hunger sequences which escalate as you get closer to the end.

+Joseph Pando Awesome theory! The hunger sequences could definitely be interpreted in many different ways. The only reason I am not completely convinced is due to the fact that the mask is clearly a tengu not a Baku. I believe if it was the developer's intent to introduce a Baku, then a Tengu mask wouldn't be obtainable in the game. It's just too big a detail to overlook.

This is totally interesting! But then, why would the baku take the form of a child? The baku does not have shapeshifting powers as far as I know, and not much is said about it ENTERING dreams... Is it plausible that Six is appearing as the Geisha when she was younger?

Interesting theory. The Japanese influence is so strong that I have no doubt that it wasn't just added for aesthetic reasons. This being the dream of an extremely vain lady would also explain why everyone but her is depicted as grotesque and hideous. What I still want to know is the importance of the other characters like the chefs, and why they're wearing masks. One of the guest character models also wears a mask. Masks have a huge importance in this game. I'd like to know how all the other aspects of this game like the "Nomes" and hunger relate to this theory too.

Nice theory! Though I have one of my own called the Seven Virtues and the Seven Deadly Sins Theory. The basic concept is that Six, at the beginning, is being of virtue. This can be seen through her humility (her wearing a simple rain coat), kindness (her hugging the Nomes), abstinence (her waiting for the last moment to eat even in the kitchen when she could have easily stolen some food), etc. But as she gets closer to the end, she becomes a being of sin or she manifests a being of sin that looks much like herself. Where is this being of sin? You can spot a dark version of Six standing near some candles (I think, I'd have to go check) as Six devours the Nome. Granted this theory is a WIP, and a longer version can be found on my quotev account, but this is just the condensed version. Again, great theory and have a good day/night.

So she didn't gain her powers from the Lady, killing the lady in the first place was her purpose there. Once she killed the lady, she had no reason to hide her powers any more. Would explain why at the start of the game she wakes up in a suitcase, must have been how she infiltrated the place.

Okay, with the Japanese influence, I decided to find the Japanese number set, and 6 is pronounced 'Roku'. So searched for any names with 'Roku' as a part of the name. I found on one site, 'Roku' means as a name - emolument.The name Roku originated as an Japanese name, normally given to girls or effeminate objects. I then searched for the Japanese perception of the color 'yellow', and guess what? It is the symbol of courage. So 'Six' is really 'Roku'.

I really like this theory! If it's ok i'd like to take it a step further. Rather than six taking the form of some random little girl, and also rather than a daughter character like some people speculate. What if Six is a portrayal of the Geisha lady herself? And we get to see some sort of progression on how she became the way she is. One thing i noticed is that the way you see the Geisha at the beginning of the game, the way the camera zooms in to her eerily turning around to face you is EXACTLY how six looks after she "consumes" the geisha in this nightmare. So it would be like she was being haunted by her previous self, when six held the mirror, the Geisha saw who she had become, and who she was, before the nightmare consumed her. ...... Just a thought! haha

I have a similar theory, though it may sound cliche or silly. My theory is that Six is a kitsune. Kitsune are shape shifting fox spirits associated with fire. Six is treated like some kind of pest animal by other inhabitants of the maw. There is a fox mask in the game that can be equipped to Six. Her age is nine. Some kitsunes have nine tails. All these facts led me to theorize that Six is a kitsune. Though, this tengu theory is explained much better than mine.

Six can also wear a fox mask, reminiscient of the Japanese kitsune, which can also appear in people's dreams and shape shift into human form, but additionally, some kitsune have the ability to consume human life force or spirits, which appears to be what Six is doing when she walks out and the guests die around her. I also think it's kind of funny that she can wear a Pac-Man mask (Called the Pakku mask, in reference to the Japanese onomatopaeia that's Pac-Man's namesake), because Pac-Man literally eats ghosts

its lacking, i dont think tengu is the right species. have u seen the evil twin of six? the pure black girl that appears when she satisfies her very frequent hunger? She appears for a very short while and vanishes. She is black and is hard to see in the dark room, but just search ,little nightmares evil twin of six, on youtube. U may need to find a video that properly encircles her or tells you where she is. She is a species who is hungry very often and has a dark side? perhaps an uncontrollable hunger? It doesnt fit tengu. I mean, she stays being a child, even though she has to climb a lot, she would use her wings. She is doing puzzles where no one is around. She has no one to fool. She would release her disguise and use her wings to make life easy if she really was a tengu. Even when she falls to her doom, she really dies, she never reveals her wings.

But if she had all those powers already why wouldn't she use them against the chefs or the janitors? And only after killing the lady when walking out of the Maw? Everyone on the Maw pretty much seemed to be out to kill her or eat her, (maybe knew six's purpose?) so why would she just run if she was so powerful? What do you think about the scenes where Six gets hungry and eventually eats the gnome, which leads up to "eating" the lady? To me it kind of implies that she gained some kind of power. It was definitely Six's purpose to kill her. In the beginning Six seems kind of careful and scared, and as you go on she completely changes into this monster. I like this theory though!

I think the hunger ties in more with the overall theme of lost innocence and is purely symbolic. I don't believe that dark Six is a sister or anything like that.

The problem I have with this theory is that you killed the person having the dream, meaning that the dream would be over, but the dream doesn't end right after you killed the lady, also, if six started the game in a suitcase, she could easily take a lighter to protect herself from the darkness.

theory doesn't hold much water. tengu masks are popular in noh theater. mostly as devils, or evil beings. 2 noh masks are shown in the game the lady mask worn by the lady, and the man mask worn by some of the gusts. Tengu mask is dlc. as well as the kitsune mask. also all the bosses wear a mask. :) Most likely made of human flash. Your on the right track, the japanese theme is key, but i think it more has to do with the various oni/yokai/mononoke of japanese lore. look up yamishibai japanese ghost stories. little nightmares falls inline with this. :) ps the lady isn't a geisha, those women are entertainers, and wear makeup. Which the make up is apart of their tradition as the style of make up represents what level they are. Maiko or full fledge geisha. It is also tied to their geisha name as well. the lady Is a host. nothing more.

It may be the most accurate theory for the moment, but how do you explain the scene where Six is seen watching on top of the maw in the end of the game, then IF Six is a Tengu, Tengu is a supernatural being, why does a supernatural being need to eat? Six also feast on bread at first, then go wild and eat meat, but if we are talking about a supernatural being here, then it wouldn't make much sense after all if Six is a Tengu. Lastly, if Six is a Tengu, then why does she need to runaway from the chef or janitor? It can use its supernatural powers to slay those beings

Nice theory. Few facts don't match though. How will you explain the dark Six that appears when she devours the gnome? Also the geisha has pictures of Six in her room. The geisha seams to know Six. Maybe she is her daughter. Maybe the mask is meant to say that Six played a 'role' of Tengu, because of what happened, but she wasn't actually one. Also regarding the lighter, I think you are looking too closely. Sometimes there isn't necessary explanation for something. For example I didn't think her having a lighter was strange. She was in a hotel, she might have picked it up.

It is possible that they took some inspiration, but the mask is more than likely just used because the Tengu is an extremely popular myth in Japan. There is to much additional storyline for it to just be like that. That doesn't really sound correct to me.... If the story was happening in the lady's mind all along, then why would we be exploring places where she's not even there? She only appears after the 2 thirds of the game (if you forget Six's first dream). And also, when you die in a dream, you're kind of supposed to wake up, the game should end at this very point.

Is Six afraid of Seven? Six (sin). Seven (completeness of divine will). eight (rebirth new beginnings). Nine (divine completeness). the main character, Six, is travelling through the Maw. The Maw is inhabited by gluttons invited by the lady to feast, fatten, and be made into food. Six (main character) is a manifestation of the geisha's sin, the gluttons (Seven) feast on the meat (Eight) by the geishas (Nine) invite or command. At the end of the story Six easts the Geisha and is made complete. So if this is Six's Little Nightmare I think its safe to say that Six is afraid of Seven because Seven Eight Nine.

The walking out scene at the end then is Six leaving the dream? Like did she only kill the vanity and not the lady in real life. Also while I do think you are onto something with the Japanese theme and the Tengu makes alot of sense, it could just be an inspiration for Six, not the basis of the whole story. Also since the creators have linked their game to childhood and experiencing the world as a child (exaggerated of course), this theory seems to neglect that premise a bit too much. Also this theory basically ignores alot of other elements in the game. It is an interesting theory and adds another piece to the puzzle that is Little Nightmares, but I don't think this explains everything. Also as a note, you don't have to sell the premise of your theory more than once "changes everything." Like you can get to the point a bit quicker and explain your thoughts more to make up for the time. Makes the video have more meat in it. Nice theory though. Really interesting take on the game. Keep up the good work :)

I have a theory.. know the movie spirited away? If so then I think this came after that sen (choihero and sorry is I spell it wrong) Went back to the monster world ten years later when she's older and the lady that owned the bath house died (I forgot her name) so she Kept the bathhouse and changed it... then she maybe gained her dark magic later in the years and became ugly, but she had a child and she can't stand how pretty she is so she used her magic and turn everyone into a ugly person and brain wash them

Your video has merit but there are bigger connections to The Lady than you supposedly invading her dream, there are pictures of six in The Lady's room, also Six suffers from hunger which in a dream state you would think wouldn't affect her. She is also watched each time she consumes food by a shadow version of herself making it seem that even if it were a dream world if anyones it would be Six's plus if caught by the Lady you see she has a form of telekinesis showing she has control over something far greater than just a standard form of humanity. it'd be interesting to know what your views are on this. Great videos anyway.

I would really like to investigate the dark Six and the hunger a bit more, but I believe the both a symbolic. The hunger symbolizes a natural stimulus that must be satiated, but the evil Six is the dark half of Six's conscience that is trying to pervert her hunger and make something so basic as eating food a negative and perverse action. Much like the world around her, the evil Six is merely another influential culmination of negativity that is forcing her to assimilate to the ways of the Maw.

Yes. Even if you don't believe in God, the saying STILL holds true. Gluttony and vanity CAN objectively lead to your downfall or even your demise. I suppose "What goes around comes around" is an applicable here, too. The Geisha and her clienteles demise are a direct result of them engaging in evil actions
