These days, Annie is famous as being a frizzly-haired orphan girl singing "Tomorrow", but she was originally a cartoon character created in 1929, and later turned into a radio show. This is one of the broadcasts from 1936 titled "Watching bridge being built"

I'm here because I am - once again - watching "A Christmas Story" and I'm looking for the darn lyrics to the song. I grew up in the 1970s, but I was one of the last in line of a big family. My dad is older than most father's of 45 yr old guys and he remembers listening to this by the radio. We need the lyrics, DERNIT!! Tiggle fiifer!! lol What a different time. Our TV's and the internet/social media advertise to our kids all the time, but MAN, it was blatant back then.

+Jonny Nelson I remember my Mom singing at least part of this song to us kids! She couldn't remember the whole song. She was just a kid when she listened to this song on the radio, kind of like your Dad! I sure wish I had recorded this on my audio recorder, I have one on my video camera, it has 3 functions on it. Anyway, she passed away last Fall in Oct.. I didn't even think of it then, everything was a blurr at the time! She loved that broadcast, and in the later years, when my kids were little, the movie was playing in the theatres, she went to see it. She loved it! Another song she liked, popular in those days, was "Hallelujah I'm a Bum". She said that her Dad (my Grandpa, of course) would sing it to her and her Brother and Sister sometimes! It's on here somewhere, I've seen it and heard it!

I remember listing to this as a child and being so exited to listen every night, sadly at the very end when we all got our decoder pens the most famous movie line is history poped into all our heads. "BE SURE TO DRINK YOUR OVALTINE" This maddened me so much I called all my friends and with disappointment in our voices we came up with the silliest scheme to do the same thing back to lil orphan Annie.

the organist for these broadcasts out of Chicago was Irma Glenn, very well known at the time. In 1931 my mom and her friend Clara, age 12, had the job of singing the opening and closing theme every week, sung five years later by (obviously) a man. Irma Glenn and the two girls were in one studio at NBC Blue in the Insull Building, while the voice actors were in a separate studio elsewhere. Just a bit of trivia for y'all. :)

This show and my late mother-in-law had history. In 1930, MIL (age 9) and her brother (age 6) were sent to live at Maryville Academy, an institution in Des Plaines, IL. (Her mother had left the family in 1928, and her father wasn't able to secure sufficient employment [due to the Depression] to care for his kids, so the orphanage was seen as the best alternative). A feisty little girl, MIL determined she would make the best of her situation, and joined in all the activities at her new residence, which included religious and secular education, home ec, gym (basketball and swimming), and various entertainments, including gathering in an assembly hall to listen to children's radio shows (enhanced by use of speakers). Little Orphan Annie was new at the time, and the kids LOVED it, seeing redheaded Annie as 'one of their own'. Eventually, they all learned the theme song, and sang along with the intro. In the end, the orphanage turned out not to be a 'hard knock life', but rather a place of refuge for kids displaced from their homes by various adversities.

Wow! The entire radio theme from the Little Orphan Annie radio show. Actually, Little Orphan Annie's comic strip began in 1924 and the radio show lasted from 1930 to 1943. Ovaltine was the original sponser, but in the last few years Puffed Wheat Sparkies cereal sponsored them. Joe was from the radio show and only the radio show.

When I was a kid, I always thought Ovaltine tasted slightly medicinal and avoided it like a plague. When my father was a kid, about the time this radio show was broadcast, he thought the same thing. I couple of years ago, they tried to sell it to kid again in these sappy TV commercials. I don't think it worked.

Actually, the cartoon was created in 1924 and it was based on a poem from 1885.

Yes, I've heard of that poem. It was called "Little ORPHANT Annie." I've never heard or read the poem, but from what I've heard about it, it was about a little girl who tells scary stories to other children, warning them that "The goblins will get you if you don't watch out." Back in the 1970s or '80s, "Mad" magazine ran a parody of famous poems built on the premise of what would have happened if the poems had "sequels," and one of these was a follow-up to "Little Orphant Annie" entitled "A Farewell to Little Orphant Annie." In the hypothetical sequel, all the children are so frightened by Annie's stories, that they begin to have nightmares, or throw fits. After examining and questioning the kids, a doctor realizes that Annie is the cause of their problems, and recommends that she should be sent to a mental institution, because, as he tells the children's parents, "All kids throw fits/when you let weirdo orphan girls/scare them out of their wits." The poem ends with Annie in the institution, where she imagines that she hears strange voices saying "We're goblins who'll get Annie/if she don't watch out."

When I’m stuck with a day that’s grey and lonely, I just stick out my chin and grin and sayyyyyyooooohhh” Oops sorry that wouldn’t come along for about 40 years or so, when Andrea McArdle would become a 13 year old nominee for a Tony Award on Broadway. Her co-star Sandy was a rescue from a Connecticut shelter and stayed with the show the entire 6 year run of the original production.
