Little Wars TV

Күн бұрын

This week on Little Wars TV, we reflect back on our second season by answering your questions! Sit down, pour yourself a dram of Scotch, and join us to discuss where we store our miniatures, how we design scenarios, and so much more.
Thanks to everyone who submitted questions over the last month! We tried to get through as many as we could without running too long. If you want to stay up to date with the latest LWTV news, we encourage you to follow us on our aptly named "Little Wars TV" Facebook Group. Of course, you can also visit us on our official homepage at www.LittleWarsTV.com and right here on KZbin where our channel lives. If you love historical wargames as much as we do, please tell your history-minded friends where to find us so that we can keep growing the audience for this incredible hobby.

I offer a suggestion for a cheap and useful addition to any generic wargamer's kit: a set of camo dice marked with Roman numerals. I made a set from a cheap-shop bag of 12mm wooden cubes, spray painted with earthy brown and green hues, then Roman numbered with a white marker. Some are marked from I-V, others from VI-X, always leaving one blank face. This gives a cheap, flexible way of marking things like unit attrition in a way that better blends in with the scenery whilst also visibly standing out from the myriad of other dice that tend to get scattered around the table. Cheers fellas. Stay safe. Ps, that Gallipoli table looks intriguing.

Hey, Little Wars, I'm sorry about how the pandemic has affected the club, but I'd like to make a battle request, if possible, since the date is incoming pretty soon. But the Battle of Grunwald was a pretty significant and possibly largest battle in the Medieval world, and I was wondering if it would be possible to see that in a future season.

"We're not [interested in 'balance'-this is a historical wargaming club...we're interested in setting up historical scenarios...doesn't matter if the game is 'fair'; it's usually not 'fair.'" Bravo! It's gratifying to hear someone else speak to this consideration creeping into the hobby, sometimes. I've tried to explain to some that 'balance' can be found in other considerations in a game-a set of victory conditions that measures the relative performance/outcome of a participant vs. their historical counterpart. BUt, many look for a perfectly balanced, ahistorical portrayal, w/ the history just pasted on as a garnish...dunno: I appreciate your approach!

Two great conflicts shaped Paraguay, The triple alliance war (Paraguay vs Argentina-Brazil-Uruguay) and the Chaco War (Paraguay vs Bolivia). The triple alliance war completely decimated Paraguay, some historians estimate the loss of about 90% of the population. It's a tragic and really interesting war.

You guys can hopefully reopen when this is all over... I consider you guys "essential" at this particular time, looking forward to season 3. Being older definitely changes your outlook on gaming and life in general...Your perspective changes once the front rank starts to thin a little! Perhaps that's why people move over to historicals later in their lives? Respectfully, Gunny

Actually, I did pour a dram before sitting down to this Q&A (a 12 year old Glengoyne). It's entertaining to hear the thoughts of members of a club that mirrors so exactly the attitudes of our own local group - we're there to explore the history, to play well, and to enjoy each others' company, with "winning" being a secondary consideration. Stay well, Little Warriors. I'll be looking forward to seeing what you do when the pandemic blows over. By the way, I think the format of having some of you sit down with a scotch and hash out the relative merits of various rule systems WITH THE CAMERA ON would be a big winner.

Greetings from a couple of exits up the Green Stamp. Would love to see you play and review some of the musket period skirmish rules that are now out there. Things like M&T or SP2, they appear to combine RPG with historical. They also permit you to put more effort into the quality of your miniatures and terrain. As you are not building large units or armies. Things are looking up now that the State stores are open, but only 6 bottles a day. Good health and good gaming.

THAT was a fun episode to watch and to get a peek behind the curtain as to how things are run in your club! I have noticed that there are a lot of shelves with books on them, scattered about the rooms. Are they there for eye candy... like the weapons hung on the walls... or do they form a, "Wargamer's Library", of historical reference materials for the members to use to research for inspiration for scenarios; a "feel", and backgroungd for different eras; and not least, orders of battle? Do members donate books? Does the club purchase books that may be too expensive/out of print for members to buy on their own? Are Library Sales, Used Book Stores, and/or Yard Sales utilized? What criteria, if any, is used to determine if a book is worthy enough to be included or not? Thanks for providing another great video! I'm looking forward to Season Three and the Further Adventures of Little Wars TV!

I am mostly a solo historical gamer as there is no "club" environment close by. There is a good game store, however, 40K dominates, and there is no set game night. The owner does set up tournaments which are well received by those that play. Attempts to gain interest in any historical gaming stopped at Bolt Action, and the power gamers have ruined that for me. That said, I love the videos Little Wars puts out, whether they be reviews or games. The "perfect club" atmosphere comes through, leaving me wishing I lived closer to your club!

My introduction to some of the South American conflicts came from a counters war gamed called Trench Foot by GDW, which had a scenario for the Chaco War. I guess you could use terrain and miniatures instead of the counters and map with Trench Foot. As as thought, I think Altar of Freedom would work fine with Franco-Prussian War era, with a few tweaks here and there.

I got in to gaming when I was 11 when I bought an Airfix book by Bruce Quarrie titled, Napoleonic Wargaming. Have you ever played with the rules he included in the book? I would be really curious to see the club run a game with his rules as a lot of wargamers "cut their teeth" with his rules and were introduced to the hobby by this book. Many gamers remember them with affection and people still use them. He included a revised rule set in his further publication titled "Napoleon's Campaigns in Miniature".

It didn't work quite like you describe, but Greg did run a Gettysburg campaign for the club a few years back with thick fog of war -- until our forces met, we did not even know who controlled other Corps/Divisions in our own army. As it turned out, we did end up in a huge battle - in Emmittsburg. I remade the intro sequence of the movie "Gettysburg" to star us, and that actually was a big step in the path to creating LWTV!

I'd say the way you guys run a lot of your games is almost role-playing. some of your first videos I watched really captured my interest because people were playing the roles of specific generals. Although there's no character development you are definitely playing roles. I'd actually be interested in seeing you guys do some sort of an extended campaign that maybe included some development of leaders and troops. A good example was your multi-table Napoleonic Italian campaign. The way you did the fog of war and had different actions going on in different parts of the area was extremely interesting. I'd like to see something like that but with an even more extended time line. Keep up the good work, love you guys.

I think a comparisson of the aspects of games could be interesting. A straight forward example would be Black Powder and Muskets & Tomahawks. A comparrison would point out that if you are wanting to replay a movie like Waterloo, then that is Black Powder's strength, but if you want Richard Sharp or Last of the Mohecans then Muskets & Tomahawks may be more your speed. If you are new to the era the M&T may be a good start so you can get minis on the table, with Black Powder on the shelf for long term army planning.

As regards Solo Wargaming. There is the Solo Wargaming Association with a bi-monthly magazine with often interesting articles. Being a solo wargamer I use whatever rules I prefer. The difference is either fighting for one or both sides. Using a programmed response or A.I. to control one side, or both. Using cards/dice or another means for deciding a likely response to to a situation.

Question: What is your take on mash-ups? In other words, combinations of some game rules. I tend to like the activation dice in Bolt Action, but I prefer the combat rules from Combat Patrol, etc. I also like FIre and Fury for my ACW, but utilize an older set of rules (Rally Round the Flag) for organizing my regiments/brigades. I also supplement with rules I create myself -- in other words, I find a game where I don't like the morale rules, so I substitute with my own that I create. Sometimes I'm looking for something to tweak that I feel one set of rules is lacking.
@lwtvsteve4975

Personally I have done the same myself. I think one of the great things about being in a part of the hobby where there is no central "big game" that requires conformity (and the fact I don't much like tournaments) makes it ripe for cobbling together your "perfect rules." As long as you have fun with it, do it!

We hope the new Warlord project is a huge success! It's a shame they didn't choose to go 15mm to make the range more compatible with existing figures, but the plastic sprues look really nice and the cost is quite reasonable.

Nothing about the answer to the playtest question surprised me except the admission of not playtesting a convention scenario. While I agree after several years, you get a feel for "balance", to me it seems a little irresponsible to not playtest a convention scenario at least once. WRT the "new wargamers starting out", this triggered a pet peeve of mine: if you are going to play a miniatures game somewhere, bring a tape measure! And nowadays you should get one that has both inches and centimeters. They aren't expensive, and bringing your own shows you have at least the minimum interest in supporting the hobby, and the people who are taking the time to acquire and paint the miniatures and run the games. Great job on Season 2 LWTV, looking forward to next season!

Keith may not playtest his convention scenarios, but most of us do. Well, maybe half of us. But we're also running game rules that we've played in the club very often, so you do get a feel for what works and what doesn't.

I ran so many convention games using my own rules systems over the years I just didn't need to test most scenarios. That's not to say I never play test or refuse to, I just have a feel for when I need to and when I don't. It's been a while since I've run convention games though.

Another great video guys! So a curious question, maybe for the next time or whenever; so why haven't you filmed a WWII game with Keith's rules, "Disposable Hero's"? You did a Chain of Command and a Bolt Action game already, but no DH's. As a die-hard CoC player, I'm still open to other gaming systems, and would love to see a game of DH from the "horses mouth". Looks cool, but know nothing about it. Big Rich from TFLs does a ton of videos on his game systems...why not one of your system? Take care.
@LittleWarsTV
@LittleWarsTV 4 жыл бұрын
An excellent suggestion! The TFL guys really do a great job supporting their rules. It should be noted that while Keith (and Chal) created DH many years ago, they since sold their game company to Brigade Games, so that's all owed and run by a third party not related to our club. Keith still writes for them, but it's not quite the same as the TFL guys, who own and run their business directly.
@redmist1122
@redmist1122 4 жыл бұрын
@@LittleWarsTV Didn't know Chal was a co-creator of the rules...as I never played them nor own any copies of the material. I did buy into Brigade Games Kickstarter a few years back for WWII miniature sets. Gotcha on the TFL guys...it would be cool to see a different flavor of WWII skirmish gaming in the mix. The maybe a cross review of all three systems. Take care and thank you for the response.

Force on Force and Skirmish Sangin are not in the same rules family other than they are modern warfare rulesets. Force on Force is designed more for larger platoon size games with the fire team as the base maneuver element, where Sangin is more of a micro skirmish where you are focused on the actions of the individual soldiers and/or insurgents. Sangin is also more narrative focus as a game is quite enjoyable in a campaign format. So it really depends on player interest, as for our group we play both with scope of game being the determining factor regarding which system to use. Dishdash Games will be releasing UltraCombat: Modern this summer, and it will have more of a sliding scale of play where you can have a micro skirmish with individual soldiers or company sized engagements with the squad as the base maneuver element.

Question for next time: do you consider imagi-nations wargaming close to historical or off in its own genre? Does anyone at the club enjoy or has tried any imagi-nations wargaming?
@LittleWarsTV
@LittleWarsTV 4 жыл бұрын
We have not ever tried "imagi-nations" as a club, but I know it's popular and would not be opposed to trying. It definitely feels like it's own genre--historical units and tactical gaming, combined with a non-historical setting. It only seems fun in a campaign-style setting where you'd be building a nation.

@@oneMeVz It's usually involves taking a period, often the Seven Years War, and creating fictional armies based around the organisation of the units creating armies and a fictional nation/country. Sometimes, again, based on real areas or countries. Usually they also include the making up of fictional characters to rule or lead the counties or armies. Look up Imagi-nations on google there are plenty of blogs around.
