Franklin saves this one. What happened to that Les Paul tone to make it so watery in the last 2/3 of this tune?

Alvin Taylor and I were about to play a gig with a jazz artist named Tony Saunders, this was part of a guitar festival at Fresno State. Some of the group was delayed in traffic, and as Alvin and I were trying to kill time on stage waiting for our band to show up, Tony Franklin hopped up out of the audience and came to play with us in the middle of our first song.
