I completely agree. I will admit I had a cage this size for a couple weeks or so when I first got my Guinea pig because she was super little. But once she started growing we noticed she needed more room to run around in. We upgraded to a 2x4. But I despise how people keep their full grown Guinea pigs in a tiny cage like that. 🤦‍♀️

That was the cage we got when we first got our two guinea pigs. We never used the ramp. The upper platform was only used for a place for them to hide under other than the house we put in. They were much smaller when we got them and we've upgraded their cage twice since. We used it again when we first got our new guinea pig until we got her checked out by the vet, and as a temporary place for them when we cleaned the larger cage so it was OK for that.

Oh my God, I don't even like admitting it, but when we got our first pig back in the 80s, her home was a 55-gallon aquarium! We lived in a very rural farm town and our expertise came in the form of the pet shop employee and two library books. That's all we had access to. It breaks my heart to think back to that, but we did the best we could with the information we had available to us at the time. I'm just so thankful that the internet exists now and people have access to a wealth of information that will give their piggies their best lives.

When I first had a guinea pig back in the late 1990s I had no idea what they really required for space and we kept him in a simple, modified rubbermaid box used for storing craft supplies, roughly 75 cm by 60 cm. Later I received a cage about double the floor area of the first one, but again, we didn't know that that cage was not even a third of the recommended size for two guinea pigs. That being said, my guinea pig and my brother's (his lived in that craft box-based cage for six years) lived pretty long lives. Mine lived 7 years. That being said, I know they would have been much happier in a larger accommodation now. If I was to purchase a cage now, I would either make a C&C or get a prefab C&C from Kavee. Even those in general are less expensive than the cage kits you buy at pet supply houses. Videos on KZbin like yours, Scotty's Animals and LA Guinea Pig Rescue have been a much needed wealth of information to my fairly uninformed self.

I have a cage like this from when I adopted two piggies off craigslist. They kept them in it 24/7 and both were super fat and had bad nails. I now just use it like a piggie "dog house" for them on the porch so they have a place to go into to feel safe and some shade. Covered the wire door with some cardboard so they dont slip their feet through the parts but they more just hop inside anyway. It works for that but thats really all its food for is just an on the porch house to rest in, not an actual cage.

Used this type of cage for my first guinea pig. That was for one night in May 2021. The next day, I got a second guinea pig. They were only in there for about a week until I got a Midwest cage. I currently have three in my Midwest. They certainly don't mind. I will, however, be expanding their cage in the coming weeks when I finally move into my new apartment. I'll have a lot more space and I'll be able to attach the Midwest with some C&C grids along with some modifications on the Midwest setup. They'll finally have more space and hopefully will be less agitated at each other.

But it did not have the level, they might have taken it out by the time I got there, so they had no hideys. (Family friend was neglecting them.) They had cats and one of them actually managed to get inside the cage because of that flimsy door! Luckily the cat didn't hurt either of them, it just sat in there and probably traumatized them. Water bottle was awful and so was the hay rack, you could not fit a lot in there. They are now in a 5×2 c&c with fleece liners and are happier than ever.

Once upon a time (20 years ago) we had a cage from a pet store, where our tiny baby pigs lived. When they grew, we soon bought the biggest one we could find, but even that wasn't good enough. So at some point we connected multiple cages with pieces of rain pipe, so the pigs choose in which cage they wanted to be. At night, because in the day time whenever one of us was home, they would roam around the entire livingroom. Funnily enough they would climb back in their cage(s) for the night. I hardly ever needed to go around and round them up. These days, our pigs live in a pen we built ourselves. Nothing in stores is actually really big enough for a (herd) of pigs. It pains me to know some pigs do live in these cages.

@@XtinaLeigh That is a good idea for a cage that is small for a guinea pig to be used for being a transporting Caier or going to the vet in it and put a little blanket and a treat in it so they dont feel scared or threatend

Oh wow this looks even smaller then the one we initially got for our piggies, but then realized when we got them it was way too small and built them a bigger space. We made a mistake of not doing enough research on space needed for guinea pigs, but then thankfully found info in videos like yours on what is suitable. I can't believe this has 5 star reviews, it's terrible.

The only good part of my "starter cage" was the water bottle. It attached nicely to my "big girl cage" when we made the move soon after.

I have a similar cage that I use if I have to isolate one of the pigs due to illness, and even though sick pigs aren't going to be terribly active, I feel like I'm putting them in a prison cell. It breaks my heart to see piggies live their entire lives in those cages. Especially when we have access to so much information on piggie care.

Hi Julia, many thanks. Nugget showed what she wanted to do most: flee. 5 star ratings are nowadays bought.

This breaks my heart! Are people really keeping piggies in a cage like this?!

Yep, especially in North America that is very far behind Europe on these things :(

I looked on amazon for more cages. There's one that's slightly bigger than this that people are using for piggies and rabbits!!! RABBITS! I cannot imagine putting a poor animal in these things. People are horrible.

I think the slide turns into a ramp if you put half of a giant bag of bedding instead of fleece. Cages like this expects the owners to use bedding which is why it is so deep. For sure only a newborn guinea pig for a week or two can stay in this.

Former guinea pig owner here. The cage we had for 2 piggies had the short side as long as the long side here and the boys had sufficient space for zoomies and a large house with 2 ramps and it still felt almost too small. This cage is absolutely insufficient for any fur potato larger than a dwarf hamster although the equipment is standard guinea pig stuff. As a rule of thumb for an all in one cage if the short side is almost too large for a standard door and the wide side is at least double that then you got the right cage for 2-3 piggies but buy a second or third house wich is never included.

Here's a tip for small cages. Turn the top up-side-down then put a fleece liner on it so their feet don't get deformed. But keep in mind the small need for a top.

It is a ladder I have a cage like that for my guinea pig but she only goes in there at night then when I wake up I go straight to her and let her out in to a big fenced in pen which has everything you would need for a guinea pig

It is really sad that some guinea pigs have to live in a habitat like this 247. Your piggies are so lucky to live in a big clean cage. Sometimes people just like the colours and look past how small the cage is. Anyways love your videos!

Hello from India, I really enjoy your videos. I made a coroplast cage for my 2 guinea pigs with an extra floor. the guinea pigs chew the coroplast and have slowly been eating it all through the years. I provide lots of hay and pellets but they occasionally nibble on the coroplast! . Any advise to deter them would be very helpful. Thank you 🙏🏻

Coroplast is not good for them, they will chew anything in their cage to relieve boredom and for dental hygeine, so naturally they will ingest a lot of what they chew -- find a wood material that is UNtreated or stainless steel wire mesh that is painted, and ensure there are no sharp corners/points on them. Also, be mindful of what this video above says about the door, the guinea pigs tiny feet can get caught between the wires if there are not spaced appropriately, leading to bumblefoot or serious injuries.

im pretty sure that thing is smaller than my med/travel crate which is a 2x1. It is so so sad to see the size compared to Nugget and whats worse if i had been able to afford the expensive pet store cages my first piggie would have been a solo pig in something this size all bought from a big chain pet store. Im so glad the store cages are so over priced it made me go home and look on line find info and start with a midwest and 2 rescue pigs. 4 yrs later i have 13 in 4 cages all over sized except our one girl who refused to get along with any of the other 10 girls she lives alone in the midwest now we keep trying to find her a friend she just doent like anyone.
