Sounds like a good plan for your family. You’re not the only homestead that is cutting it back and diversifying. I think many are doing what they need to for their family and getting projects done. Those of us without homesteads are doing the same thing. We all see what is happening around us and making life choices to go forward. Love that you are willing to take us along. How many acres do you own? Do you guys have a five year plan and/or yearly goals for projects/builds/property clean-up? Dan had mentioned the long road on and off your property causing wear and tear on vehicles. Is there a plan for re-grading? I was so glad you guys decided to keep all homestead activities on one channel. Always look forward to any of your video content!

Getting the animals out of a back pasture is so much easier if they are used to getting grain once in awhile! Even if you don't do it every day, you shake the grain bucket and they learn that brings a treat! It's a great way to catch loose livestock!

Some of mine love grain and others could care less. Sure works well for the ones who do like it!

I use a heat lamp in the green house, the red hue helps to ripen the tomatoes and peppers also.

Thank you for posting your honest feelings. This winter and spring has been a challenge on our homestead/farm for the same reasons. Every things feels like a failure because “the list” never gets smaller and grows every time around the property. More projects than time or energy will allow, working full time and trying to balance the old farmstead and garden/ animals, and balancing the desire to spend more time with friends and family, makes one feel like a complete failure at what brings us the joy we seek by being homesteader. Your post helps bring me a reality balance. Need to sit down and weight it out. Thank You both!

Hi ya Chelsea. You know….this is a valuable last couple videos. I know of some folks who have this romantic idea of homesteading but don’t have any idea of the work involved in running one and keeping it going. Your honesty and openness is refreshing. I loved that in the last video you were honest about how some projects hadn’t been done from a few years ago cause of lack of time. I know I have said it before….but I am excited for you guys. Hi Chelsea from our farm in New Hampshire. Practical decision to downsize your herd. Our pastures can support about 20 cows and their calves, plus the bull. We do not raise pigs. We buy organic pork from our neighbor, thus helping to support their farm. We also buy chicken and eggs from them. Another neighboring farm sells us honey. Our 40 open acres produced 7,000 bales last season. Sometimes there is a third cutting. That is enough for us to manage. You are correct, the price of grain is discouraging many people to keep more animals than they actually need. One good source of meat is registered meat rabbits. I would raise them in small a bunny barn. They can be fed with minimal grain if you can grow some of their food. Good registered stock will put on more weight in a shorter amount of time. Any that are sold should fetch a decent price. Again, just enough rabbits to feed your family. Their manure is great to raise worms. Might be a good alternative to pigs.

Love your videos!! So happy that you are keeping your property, and have a plan. I am grew up, and still live; along the Kansas/ Oklahoma line. Central region. We are experiencing some drought. So, selling cows; has been happening. We are at the moment getting the first real rain, in about 8 months. We will see how the garden goes this year. Best wishes .

Use the plastic bags they use for silage storage in your garden ! It works wonders, I used in my garden , it saved me! I could not keep up with weeds once it was tilled with cow manure..never again . Chicken or mushroom or 2 year old manure, I didnt know they used fresh ... oh my it took years to clean up but the plastic from silage bags did the trick

Thanks for the update, Chelsea! I know you and Dan are making wise decisions for your farm and your family. My seedlings are doing pretty well, but they are still in the house. I haven’t ever put them in my high tunnel, I guess I’m afraid it would get too hot during the day and too cold at night. Maybe I’ll try it with a few of my tomatoes and see how they fare.

FYI, I freeze leftover chipotle sauce in freezer bags and break off parts to put into recipes. I learned this from my daughter and she learned from me that you can freeze fresh whole ginger (bonus frozen is easier to grate).

All sounds very familiar, cattle farmer here from Southeast Missouri. Cutting back on sales to individuals also, because row cropping is astronomical. Also got out of pigs because just can’t make much money on them. Consolidating all our acreage to pasture and hay. Work smarter not harder.

I like how you think about what best for your family and for the animals. So happy for your bees making it through the winter. I wanted to tell you about your log cabin it is beautiful. I was thinking about you sealing it again I did the burn that I saw that they were doing on the Little Houses. On my porch and percula I love it they are pressure treated and are at the time over 15-18 years old. It made them dark but brought out the grain I got the torch that goes on the portable propane cylinder you use on a camp stove. I did put the clear Thompson's water seal on it to after it has been over 2-3 years and it has stayed perfect. I love it if you let me know a emil I will send a picture.

Speaking from experience, if those are lead acid batteries, you DON'T WANT THEM IN THE HOUSE!! I hope they are AGM, then you are good to go. Lead acid off gas, and we had one explode and leave parts of the plastic impeded in the drywall. We were lucky enough to not be home when it occurred. Just an awful acid mess, left to clean up. We now have lead acid in garage and we are desperately saving our pennies to buy the 16 AGM to replace ours. Solar is great, battery technology is slow coming and ridiculously expensive!

A milk house to keep all the milking gear might be an idea for you...although like you say, it is an excuse for exercise. Plants look great. An idea for your green house that I am considering ....a wood boiler outside that pumps glycol through pipes to radiators...then put a fan behind them to blow the hot air around...this would allow you to regulate the heat in the greenhouse a little better. I think it should be able to be done with solar to run the pump and two fans...just an idea. Plants look nice! Ya gotta love quack grass - I ended up cutting up feed bags and using that with squash planted in them plus a few raised beds. I am trying the woven weed fabric this year. Basement is coming along nicely. Good video!
