As someone that doesn't have kids, I tend to be critical of those that do and how they raise them, or more specifically how they expect them to be small adults. You and your parenting fill my heart with joy! You actually let your kids be kids; you encourage their creativity and self expression and I am in awe. Thank you for being such a lovely example of what mindful parenting looks like and thank you for sharing that aspect of your daily life! I know the internet can be a dark place to do so and I find it both brave and inspiring to watch you do it.

I love seeing other families’ Christmas traditions. We have a number of traditions too. When my kids left home I gave them all of their ornaments for their own tree. We decided to let the grandkids pick a theme/color combo each year in descending age. It has been very interesting and though expensive initially, now we have most colors imaginable and have even spray painted ornaments as needed. So many combos I could not list them all. The grands are adults now too but we have a great granddaughter to add to the lineup.

Theres a trick to get the cow to let down the milk. You bring the calf out and tie it right by the utters and then start milking. She thinks it’s her calf and will let down her milk. THIS WILL WORK! ❤

The cookies with jam were always known as Thumbprint Cookies in our house. I love that you have the Radio Cookie story to pass down and remember in your family. I've shared it more than once myself. My girlfriend commented that there is probably more than one Radio Cookie for the same reason from days where that is how things were shared more. She hopes people from 2 of those families meet some day.

In our house too, 71 and making them every year since small child. My Mama 99 taught me. We called them Jam thumbprints. Through the years hav done apricot, strawberry, raspberries, etc. Love them. I think Radio cookies is a great fun name. Great family tradition. Hugs from N.C..❤️

This is the first year that my now two and a half year old can properly participate in Christmas crafts and salt dough ornaments are definitely on our list. I think the thumbs might be too small to make the jam well in the cookies but she might enjoy rolling them and spooning the jam.

In Germany we call these cookies Husarenkrapfen (Hussar's doughnuts). I always made a recipe where I bake the dough and fill the jam afterwards and let thats dry for two days. My has a icing too. It's always a hit. Crepés.. I love them! In my family we do them savory all the time. Our dough is without butter or salt, just flour, eggs and milk and we fill it with potato salad. I know it sounds weird but it's so good. This comes from my great grandparents who had 12 children all married and they all had at least 3 kids. they used to meet at my greatgrandparents house every Wednesday and my great grandparents didn't have much. but they always had everything for crepés and potato salad. We do ours (salad) this with vinegar and oil. All my Dad cousins still eat it that way and their kids too. If there are leftover crepés we roll them up and cut them in thin stripes. We call that Flädle and its eaten with broth. Like but some in a bowl add broth and enjoy. It's one of my favorite soups ever!

I had the same problem with my loaves of bread until I decided to start using my digital scale...I bake 10 at a time and sell so its worth dirtying the scale. Yes, milk is pricey...When I was young and grew up on the dairy farm, I would drink 1/2 gallon a day my self...then when I started buying on my own my consumption went way down. Now with making yogurt and what not I am wishing I had a milk cow - not to mention the stuff they are adding to cream and other dairy. Good video!

I love pine trees to especially the pine cones still attached :) The first one we ever had many years ago had a little birds nest in it. My husband gave me several boxes with little notes hinting things and finally I figured out to look in the birds nest and he had bought me beautiful ear rings. Very fond memory of that tree. Oh wow with the parchment paper trick! My gosh the crepes look divine. And that is lunch? Tree is truly beautiful. hugs

Oh cool. Those "radio cookies" are called Hallongrottor (translated to eng: Hallon = Raspberries and Grottor = cave) ☺here in Sweden. :) Its the best and yummiest cookies ever! Me and my kids love them!

In Germany we call the cookies Husarenhütchen, which translates to Hussar's Hat. Our recipe is the same, but we add rolled oats, which makes them a little more course. I think Husarenhütchen cookies originated in Austria. In any case, Hussars were Napoleonic Prussian soldiers, some of which wore red felt in their hats.

My mom made a variation of this cookie. I believe she used white sugar and she rolled them in very finely chopped walnuts before putting her thumbprint in. She call them Thimble cookies. Your tree is beautiful.

My mom and I make these. We call them thumbprints. We make the dough, cover in egg whites and then roll in chopped walnuts. Press your thumb in the center and bake them. Then I fill them with icing but we do a version with jam too!

@@LittleMountainRanch another idea is to roll them in crushed flaked cereal so corn flakes is what my mom used to use because it was less sweet and what she used to do was overextend her thumbprint and didn’t fill with jam until after they came out of the oven! That way no sticking overflow and the jam still bakes a little as the cookies cool. We called them Jammies or thumbprint cookies. I happen to be in touch with the radio personality that was on the radio when I was growing up in the early 70’s he was the morning show person Rusty Draper in Southern Ontario, Canada and at the end of his show every morning he said the same thing as a special message to his wife and if you ask anyone older then me (my parents generation)they can remember what it was. It’s the funniest thing that everyone remembers. He said “put the kettle on honey. I’m coming home” He wrote a book in his later years his memoirs and he says he wrote it for his grandkids so they would know all about him. To his surprise a lot of us that grew up listening to him are enjoying the read too! 🥰❤️🇨🇦🙏🏻

We live in Ontario, but my husband is originally from the east coast (New Brunswick). I've got a cook book that was put together from a few ladies down there and a lot of them are very much like your radio cookies. In Austria, where it is custom to bake a big variety of Christmass cookies (weihnachtskekse) they are called Husarenkrapfen but also Engelsaugen (angel eyes). But I think the name Radio- cookies is unique.

Radio Cookie is a thing in Sweden called "radio kaka", (you melt a chocolate mixture and mix it with layers of biscuits and let it cool in the fridge ) The other we call "hallon grotta" which translates to "Raspberry caves" 😂 tasty though!

Love the radio cookie story. In our house we call Empire cookies Honeymoon Cookies and always have. My Grandma made them for my parents to take on their honeymoon trip and that's all I've ever known them as for over 60 yrs!

We had "radio cookies" #1 & #2, "radio cake", "radio pie", and "radio muffins", we missed the name on all of them, and there was a "radio bread", but nobody knows what happened to the recipe card. There used to be weekly radio recipes around here, most were prize winners, but not anymore, even though many have asked for a return of them.

For savoury crepes, pour a mixture of eggs, sour cream a bit of milk if needed and shredded gouda over the crepes.... it is soooo very good.

ah, my fave fillings for crepes are tomato/mozz/basil with a little olive oil (messy but so good!) or tuna salad, preferably with a bit of cucumber in it. both of these are super summery and not appropriate for this time of year, but ideas for the future are always nice!

A suggestion: use a kitchen scale to weigh your initial bread dough then divide it by 5. Then separate and weigh accordingly.

In Belgium, at Aldi's, it's 1,39 euro (1 euro is about 1 US dollar I think) for 1 liter organic whole milk, and 1,29 euro for organic half whole milk. That's really a big difference. And that is after prices going up.

Guess you can try freeze drying some milk once you get your production back up. That way you will have some for emergencies like this. We did freeze dry a little milk but haven't actually taken the time to test it, so that was all we did. Have to taste it before doing anymore. We like to do small batches to make sure we like what we freeze dry.
