People kind of criticized them early on for being copycat Metallababies, but you could say that of most early 80s thrash. Any time there's a forerunner in a genre, all bands take a little time to find their comparative stride and sound. And at the time, one could choose the vein of Slayer or Metallica. Death went the Slayer route. Sepultura and Testament sort of went the Metallica vein via more punk influence.

Full disclosure: I watch a lot of KZbin performances, interviews with people in all musical genres. This interview is better than 95% of the stuff available to view. I felt part of the conversation, James and the young man interviewing him are awesome. Will visit this channel again!

@@AniW2x4 Seeing how poorly modern rock bands are doing in the scene, compared to the giants, I wouldn't be at all surprised if the next big thing was metallica gen.2 where the guys kids just pick up and continue from where the guys left.

It does. I'm glad they've opened up about it so much now. They kinda just tucked it away for the longest time. Was hard as a huge Cliff fan not getting to know much about him.

James seems so at ease, like he actually wants to be here. He looks like he's having a bit of fun. Maybe he trusts that a kid won't put him in a tough spot with tricky questions that can be interpreted wrongly. We need more kid interviewers!! Good job Elliot 😃

Its pretty cool to have watched James over the past 35 years and is a perfect example of seeing someone evolve and grow. While I loved angry pissed off young James back in the day. Its nice to see the mature experienced fatherly version too.

5:41 I always felt that James never got over Cliff's death, and that a lot of songs til this day are actually based on the fact that he misses him and that his death left a huge scar in James' soul. Songs like Outlaw Torn, Bleeding Me, Until It Sleeps, Frayed etc etc for me personally always seemed to be an attempt to try to deal with this absolute trauma that James' experienced and never managed to deal with ... but thats just me.
