Rolling Rock After hearing this interview, Tom had a some good points. I watch a documentary "METAL". Awesome interview, but just to put it out there: They were in it for the money; they are not racist, but they were accused of that, but Jeff said that they ran with that angle, & Tom is a practicing Catholic. "We said on our album, "God Hates Us All", God doesn't hate us... He really loves us ALL" Tom Araya - METAL documentary interview.

The song you mention is told like a documentary. With some parts from the perpetrator's view. So Tom is telling a gruesome (but historically true) story and he's like an actor, saying lines from another person's mind or telling a story like somebody who's describing a scene.

I was thinkin he's prolly gonna spit blood on me or his eyes would glow red while he talked in reverse or something like that. I am a huge fan of Metal music. Interviews like this just show how metal musicians are regular people who choose to express their feelings and beliefs through their music. Mainstream society would have everyone believe that Metal music is evil, which is a load of crap. When I was a kid, the Vietnam war was in full swing. I was terrified of being drafted and having to leave my home and go fight in a foreign land. As a means of fighting my fears, I had my plastic army men fight imaginary wars on my bed, planning battles, ambushes, etc. This helped me to put war into a perspective that I could deal with. The same idea applies to Metal music. It helps us face our fears, deal with concepts which are horrible, and in a sense, lift the vail of the unknown.

I have watched many, many interviews with metal stars and rock gods, but I have to say... Elliot here, has such a one-up on all of the other interviewers. These guys, like Phil and Tom, show the utmost respect and compassion when they are speaking with him. They are aware that he is a child, and seem to treat him with the openness and purity that aught to be afforded kids. But they also don't treat him like an idiot... rightly so. Because lastly, Elliot asks incredible questions. Keep up the good work young sir!

Dude there used to be a guy on TV (back in the 80's) named Pastor Gary Geenwall or maybe Greenwalt - but he was one of the "backmasking" preachers back in the day - totally hilarious to hear what these people imagined they were hearing - he's prob on KZbin somewhere - but holy smokes it was funny!

What I really like in Tom Araya here is that he really dives into the questions. He really thinks and at some points literally wrestles and chews the questions to give a proper and serious answer. That shows he really takes the interview seriously and, even more important, the interviewer. That's classy. Hats off to both of them for delivering a talk like this 👍!

South of Heaven was my first Slayer album. I bought it when it first came out back in 1988. I was 18 years old then. After watching this interview of Tom Araya, I’m even more of a bigger fan. He’s Tom Araya is good person by heart.

True story, Tom and the band rented rehearsal space from my studios in Orange, Calif. where they wrote Rein in Blood and South of Heaven . They played everyday for a month pretty much non-stop, so I got to know them as friends. IN RED Rehearsal studios if you want to look it up. One day I had a thought, I'll get the band bibles with their name on them. So I did. I was only able to give one of them a bible due to a printing error, it was Tom. He was blown away thanked me and told me he'll use it for reference for lyrics. Tom due you still have your Bible? Buckner R.I.P. Jeff

Mad respect to Tom, for how he handled the question about how people treat one another. You can tell it breaks his heart to be so honest, but has too much respect to answer with bullshit "because it's a kid". Kids are people too, and constantly prove their intelligence, awareness, and observation skills. He has too much respect for the little guy to tell him that the future looks bright. That said, humans will surprise you sometimes - I think the bigger issue is that we've likely passed the point of no return, and even if we all joined hands tomorrow, I'd be skeptical that we could turn everything around enough to prevent what seems inevitable. The last 100 or so years has severely fucked us, even if we smartened up immediately.

Great interview. I used to love Slayer. It’s really cool to see Tom in this light. That said, something he mentioned about ghosts being spirit guides - if the ghosts are spirit guides meant to help guide us, they’re not doing such a good job, especially having heard him talk about how he doesn’t see things getting better. Regardless, thank you for posting this interview.
