I'm so glad James and Lars found each other. They are perfect together. It's also very interesting to see how James has grown into himself over the years. He was so shy and immature back then. Lars is impressively well-spoken and intelligent especially at only 21 years old. There is no doubt there would be no Metallica if it were not for Lars.

You're telling me. I don't think any other metal bands from that thrash metal crop ever wrote anything as compelling, dynamic and multi-faceted as Fade To Black. While Metallica were widely associated with thrash metal in the early days, they knew that they had to diversify and not be confined just to that realm and worked accordingly. Brilliant entrepreneurs indeed.
@Fabricioconde76

The beauty of this interview is that Lars was the voice of Metallica while James still felt like a shy teenager with pimples and long hair. There's no doubt Lars is the brain of the band but i'm sure he also helped James to step forward and gain confidence as the band had a growing audience and the sound they developed got better and better. This is like Ace Rothstein and Nicky Santoro making business in music, but in a very good way.
@vinaymulukutla358
@vinaymulukutla358 Жыл бұрын
This is one of the most interesting interviews not only because it was done when they were so young with just two albums out and just getting started but also the fact that James in comparison to Lars hardly says a word yet he's the frontman, principal songwriter (together with Lars) and the primary lyricist. It shows how introverted and reserved by nature James is and he's always been that way. He could also be a bit tired and just wanting a bit of rest but James is known for being very reserved and guarded. Yet he's an absolute beast on stage. Often the most flamboyant performers are actually very introverted and reserved as we have seen with Freddie Mercury. Metallica remain the world ambassadors of heavy metal together with Iron Maiden today.

Wow. I was 17 and lived and breathed Metallica back then. Fuck, time flies. Had a poster composed of photos from that gig. Just another gig? History tells us a little different. Like Motley Crue's tour grossing almost a 100 million? As far as Anthrax, they're around, but it's not like they're selling out arenas. They place 2,000 seaters, which half a dozen glam bands outsell.

Trulysarcastic44 Yeah but that's only because of a bit of a resurgence or renaissance. Thrash took a hit too, don't get me wrong, but most glam bands who were selling out stadiums in 88 were working day jobs in 95. A friend of mine played a club and said "that dude flipping the burgers looks like Jani Lane". It was Jani Lane. Those bands, their trendy bullshit only lasted them so long.

@@hmpz36911 As far as I know, bands like Motley Crue and Def Leppard always remained big, not because of nostalgia but because of a big fan base. Metallica went to super stardom, so you can't really compare them to Slayer, Megadeth or Anthrax. They also had to deal with declining attention, and they are considered 3 out of the 'Big Four'. So just imagine how many other less-known thrash band had to deal with that shit as well. It's not thrash that is the key to longevity, it's having a unique band with good music. That goes for the glam bands as well.
